Rockman/Mega Man 25th Anniversary Thread

Hm. Wasn't expecting the crossover to eat up four issues of each series, but I suppose it makes sense in retrospect. The biggest downside is that this means Ben Bates can't do all twelve.

I saw this in my local anime shop and was about to flip. It sealed so I couldn't tell the art style or quality past the cover. When I did a search I noticed that this comic looks like the actual Archie comic but with a megaman theme to it.

No thanks.
Depends on the artist. Archie tends to rotate them out every four issues or so as people become available. I don't think Hill has done anything else for the company, so he may not show up again after this arc anyway.

Just wanted to express my love for the Blue Bomber, and the sadness over the complete lack of new games he's getting.

I have my favorites in his main series (MM2 and 3) but honestly, I love them all, even the much-bashed MM4 and 8. I just recently played through all of them, in order, and loved every minute of it.

As far as the MMX series is concerned, MMX1 is just about a perfect action/platformer in my eyes. MMX2, while lacking the freshness and (imo) nearly perfect level design of X1, is also fantastic, and is very nostalgic for me being that it's the first X game I actually owned; I rented and beat X1 about 4 times before I actually owned it. And finally, X4 is also amazing. I think it features some fantastic stages, and the experience of playing as X or Zero is quite different.

Here's to you MM, you still have fans out there. ;_;
But good god, screw the final boss fight! So ridiculously hard.

People didn't like MM8? What could you possibly hate about MM8? Yeah voice acting whatever, but what else?

This is good to know, thanks. I'll be keeping an eye out for further issues then.

Wasn't a big fan of 8. The VA was terrible, but even then it wasn't a killer. The story was lacking and I didn't think any of the bosses were that great honestly.

Had a much better time with Rock and Bass then I did 8.

I noticed this when watching GameCenter CX...

this seems a bit unnecessary...
but he was called crash in the power battle in japan, so it's definitely just a mix up.

But good god, screw the final boss fight! So ridiculously hard.

i don't really get how people got hung up on this guy for so long. it's totally trivial with zero, and x is only tough until you figure out how to manipulate the pattern of the head on the left.

Well...

Jump, jump! Slide, slide!

Yeah, this.

But aside from that and voice acting, I'd say a big thing for me was that I didn't much care for the look, the controls also felt very slow and heavy for me.

I loved the look of MM8 but I do understand what you mean when you say he felt heavy. He had so many animations and ramp up animations and cool down before his actual moves kicked in and after they happened, that it made him feel a little sluggish. I guess I always understood and accepted that any frames added to a game character takes away control, so it didn't really bother me. I thought it was a good trade off, personally but I also understand if not everyone feels the same as me.

man if people are judging these games' quality by their localization efforts, no wonder the series is dead. :p

from what i've seen though, localized 8 is a special breed of terrible, so i kind of get it. i really had lots of fun with it though. I thought the sprite design and animation were far better than their attempt at 'updating' the look in rockman 7, where they seemed to try to simply make rock and co. 16-bit facsimiles of their 8-bit counterparts right down to their poses and expressions and it really didn't work so well. The sprites in 8 and rockman&forte worked much better imo because they were designed and animated with the increased fidelity in mind, particularly the way it was always meant to look very cartoony, like astro boy. The level design and kind of sluggish pace didn't do it any favors, but I can't fault the visuals.

Some art from the Mega Man/Sonic crossover.

Ippo Yamada has a band called SENSORS and in their newly open youtube account they have a live rendition of Trap Factory (Mega Man ZX battle theme for Prometheus and Pandora).

Pretty amazing stuff for those who like what Inti Creates did with the ZX series music.

good stuff. i don't think i ever really thought much of zx music until i got the zx tunes soundtrack. the ds' sound chip really doesn't do it any favors, but it's amazing when mixed with better instrumentation and vocals.

I guess I'm in the minority when I say that my top 3 Mega Man games are:

1. Mega Man 3
2. Mega Man 8
3. Mega Man 2

Well at least most would agree with 2/3.

As for me it would go

1.2
2.3
3. Rockman and Bass

Then again though I think outside of 2 that all the rock games are lacking compared to the X part of the series so long as I ignore 5/6/7.

Too many gimmicky levels! I don't just mean JUMP JUMP SLIDE SLIDE, there's a whole bunch of 'em.

I also don't enjoy the non-NES games as a general rule... there's something about the NES resolution, sprite size, etc that IS Mega Man to me; 7/8/Bass just don't feel right, even though they have their own pros and cons.

So how relevant is Mega Man in this day and age?
Now don't get me wrong, i'm not saying he's a waste or anything.
I can understand why he still holds a fanbase even after having very few releases these last few years.

I ask mainly because Capcom seems to do find without him, and aside from Nostalgia that he's what got capcom on the map. He's never even been as popular or well selling as Sonic in current times.

Now I can get that a lot of that can be do to Capcom's mistreatment of him.
From cancelling numerous games, and not really pushing anything noteworthy with him.
MML3 looked great and for whatever reason they had to go and cancel that as well which still astounds me.

I've been thinking that this silence with the Blue Bomber is because their planing on some sort of reboot with him. It would make sense especially to bring him back into the mass public conscience. Though I just hope that entails something like we saw with Mega Man X, not something like bomberman Zero.

Oh definitely, I have this fanatical appreciation for ZX and ZXA Tunes. I don't really like the vocal additions much though (didn't get much out Wonder Panorama and Misty Rain, and I really like the instrumentation), but otherwise I loved the ZX series' soundtrack. It's probably why I give the series more love than it may deserve. Organic Line was taken to another level, along with Drifting Floe. And when I first heard Determined Eyes in-game I was just..."...shit. I need this music."

Anyway, for Capcom's celebration of Mega Man's 25th anniversary I'm really looking forward to the Mega Man sticky notes and coffee mugs.

Top 3 Classic Series games
1. Mega Man 4 (GODLY soundtrack, especially the Complete Works remixes. Robot Masters are iffy, we got fucking Toad Man, but the game was a nice length and the weapons were useful. Nice stage designs too.)

2. Mega Man 7 (I like the new musical style. This game had great boss ideas and nice levels. Mega Man looks a little ridiculous here, but that's not too egregious. Introduction of item purchases and secret hunts gave some nice optional freshness, and the fighting game was a nice touch. And the English-only awesomeness, one of my favorite moments in all of Mega Man:
"I gonna do what I should've done a long time ago!...I AM MORE THAN A ROBOT, DIE WILY!"

3. Mega Man 2 (It was a fun game, with phenomenal boss ideas and great music, though by now I can't stand Wily Stage 1 anymore. I don't care for the multiple weakness thing in this game but that's not a huge issue.)

There have been rumors multiple times over the last year that Capcom has been looking to reboot the Rock franchise.

Alot of them have centered/rumored that it would actually be a Reboot/Spin-Off featuring X and it would make sense given he has been given the most use over the last year (very small but at least it's something) but then they are nothing more then rumors.

The best art is probably what Spaz (the regular cover artist) did for issues #1-4, followed by Ben Bates' (the other cover artist) work on #9-12, if you want to check back issues. The downside to that being that those are the two game adaptations, and they had some lightning fast pacing that's only now getting ironed out.

Too many gimmicky levels! I don't just mean JUMP JUMP SLIDE SLIDE, there's a whole bunch of 'em.
This is my big problem with MM8. The basic mechanics and handling are fine, but they tried to mix up the level design and did a miserable job of it.

He's fading, and I don't think much of the casual gaming public immediately recognizes Mega Man. I think not since the Battle Network heyday has Mega Man been highly successful, and after the lukewarm (at best) reception of ZX and Star Force, Capcom wants that Battle Network-level success but doesn't know how to get it. So they are content to sit on their hands until they are happy with a "financially viable!!! $$$$" Mega Man game.

This may be interesting reading to you.

Regarding Mega Man 8, I don't really hate any of the "main 11" Classic games but that one ranks low for me because I didn't think the flying and boarding segments were that fun. X8 was a -solid- game but the two Rider levels were not fun. I compare it to that. Decent attempts at freshness though for 8, in X8 the Gigabolt and Avalanche levels were no fun. I can't stand Mega Man's jumping and sliding (outside of the boarding, haha) in 8 either.

Definetly interesting, I know the support is there.
It's just been so odd that capcom has just been sitting around when it comes to MM.
But then again while capcom had a good run with listening to it's fanbase, recent years they've really been taking steps back from that. Especially where there older IP's are concerned.

With how obsessed Capcom is with trying to please the West without actually knowing what we want, I think an Act Zero style reboot would be a best case scenario, since that at least still kinda played like Bomberman. They would probably hand Mega Man off to a second string western dev and have them make a mediocre Gears clone or some shit.

I still think it'd be awesome if they thought outside the box and did something unexpected and made a Bad Box Art Megaman "Mock Reboot". Something that tongue in cheek and self aware.

At this point it will be interesting no matter what they do.

The "Rock" fanbase is so divided now, and given how every Series has suffered Quality issues at one time or another during it's run means even the fans of the individual series aren't going to just bite on whatever the throw out.

I doubt they will ever be able to really bridge the gap between Rock/X/Zero/.EXE so they really need to pick one and really push it hard or come up with something that is very unique and not just a spin off of an exsisting series like ZX or Starforce.

This would have been a great idea a few years ago when the franchise was still alive and well, but now it would just come off as too mean spirited, or at least very poorly timed. You saw how fans reacted to Bad Box Art Mega Man in SFxT, so a full blown Bad Box Art Mega Man game during a time when no other Mega Man games are being made would probably just lead to more rage and anger due to fans feeling like Capcom is insulting Mega Man and it's fans, leading to Capcom's reputation becoming more damaged.

My son and I just flipped out!

We already have everything released from the D-Arts Mega Man X line, so SUPER excited.
Son in particular was hoping they'd do a Sigma model.

Well, it allows for the arc to be kind of "shorter" and eat up four months out of the calendar year. But I wonder how they're going to do that, though? I guess you'll need all three comics every month to completely get all of the story since they're saying it's a 12-parter. Edit: wonder if they'll put it in a special book collection like they did for Sonic Genesis?

I probably should have posted my evaluation for MM #14 in here instead. Oh well. :lol You know what I think of it, anyway. I'm loving the Spiritus ex Machina arc a lot.

Reboot is a scary word in general. Reboot with Capcom is a recipe for disaster aka DmC.

While that definetly is catching a lot of people off guard (DMC didn't need a reboot)
However from what I have read and heard DmC is sounding like it'll be top notch.
So it's not always a bad thing. But still why the lack of white hair.
I know it's a minor complaint but that was one of the defining traits of the character.
I have a feeling something happens at the end of the game that causes it to turn white.

Am I just a wimp, or is the final King/Wily tower just really damn hard? I could never beat it, while being able to do the rest of the classic series without to many problems.

Mega Man & Bass is known to be a really tough game. Took me many tries to beat the fortresses.

Fuck the haters, Mega Man 8 was awesome. And yes, the soundtrack was nuts.

But even Mega Man 8 isn't as glorious as Rockman & Forte. Which has an even better soundtrack and is tough as shit. And Forte is awesome. But don't play it on GBA, because that version sucks.

So underrated around here, it's one of my favorites and yes the Complete Works soundtrack remixes are fucking great

I don't really have a problem with Megaman 8 either, the game is and plays beautifully. Some of the best visuals on the PS1 and one of the few who still holds up visually, thanks 2D graphics, you're always awesome :). Loved what they did with some of the weapons, like clown man grapple and the soccer ball, pretty fun game

Ariga teasing a new project makes me think it's just another manga.

I've always wanted to see a Mega Man game with Ariga's art style though, that man draws the greatest Wily I've ever seen.
