New Capcom USA Community Rep: Monster Hunter news "veeeeery soon"

I'm not really comforted by "it's ok" or "you'll be happy" or whatever, because I'm not one of those people who worry that the series is dead in the west - they've said many times it isn't, we've got insider sources confirming it isn't. I'm worried specifically about MH TRI GEE, and this is why I'm tired of vague hints: Tell us that we're not getting MH3G and I can at least stop hoping for that and settle for 4. But I really want 3G, so if anyone (Oichi) in the know wants to say "it's ok" specifically to that then go ahead. Or "tough luck". "MH needs online" in my head sadly suggests "3G isn't it".

It's times like this I wonder if anything would have been different, had Capcom not wasted tens of millions of dollars on partnerships with poorly chosen western studios, for games like Dark Void and Bionic Commando. Last I heard, they threw like 20 million dollars a piece at those games, not counting advertising, and it was nothing but bombs.

(In spite of the sheer hatred over DmC, with proper oversight Ninja Theory might turn out a game that sells a bit. It's not as boneheaded a choice as their previous western studios.)

It seemed like thanks to that, Capcom ended up hurting for profits, and leaned on their few successful franchises like the fighting games - nearly ruining that. With the way their localization woes are going, it feels like they don't have two pennies to rub together and every western release is a big gamble.

Yeah, it could mean either that they're canning it for good, or:

a) It needs online, so we had to work it out before releasing it outside of Japan, too bad it took us a year time.
b) It needs online, so 3DS isn't the most fitting platform for it, that's why we're porting it somewhere else instead - WiiU.

Yeah probably just wishful thinking, but option b keeps popping up in my head.

Or maybe there will just be MH4 with online.

Seriously. And games like Dragon's Dogma and Remember Me seem not much better, market-wise.

Well at least this confirms the guess that they are trying to implement online in order to market it outside Japan. Nice to finally have some confirmation on that front. Unless they overhaul 3G.... we won't be seeing that. So I dunno maybe MH4 will have it. I'd be fine with getting that, honestly. 3G would have been nice though.

I loved BC2009 and thought Dark Void was great. Mega Bomba for sures though.

I agree that current Capcom comes off as a company that is living paycheck to paycheck at this point

Sounds like too much work for a series that doesn't have a big western audience.

Actually I gather Tri has sold better than combined sales of Dragon's dogma in the West - not sure if better than Operation Racoon city as well - so, considering they could just port an upscaled version of TriG - à la MH3P HD version for PS3 - without having to build it up from scratch for WiiU, and considering that most stuff has already been translated, it doesn't sound like too big an effort to me, aside from setting up some dedicated servers for it, that would take some money.

I mean, Tri did almost 2 million worldwide and had the best U.S performance of any Monster Hunter game.

It wasn't a breakout success but if you compare it to something like Dragon's Dogma then Tri's performance looks pretty good.

I would be mildly surprised if Capcom gave up on home consoles for Monster Hunter.

I think the idea that putting some work into a single game would not be worth it (like taking the time to program a online component) because that one game might not sell truck loads is a little disingenuous

Monster Hunter has the capability to be a really strong pillar for Capcom in the West, but most people don't know it exists. The MHP2 and Unite advertising campaigns failed to make much impact, and Tri didn't have much advertising presence at all.

If they actually regularly released these games in the west and they became part of the core conversation amongst gamers, the franchise would eventually reach comparable numbers in the west I think. MHP3rd only sold so well in Japan because everyone was blogging/talking about it.

@Brelston (Unity) is at it too.

I don't even want to call it trolling at this point. Capcom must have "be a pathological liar" as one of their job requirements for these community guys.

Agreed. I also think it would be wise to release a Monster Hunter game at or around the launch of a new console. It would get a ton more visibility and people eager to play new software may be more likely to give it a try.

Capcom community rep just posted this on Capcom Unity

I don't wanna say too much, but I'm glad you guys are understanding part of our strategy here. For MH to work in the West, it needs online hunting.
This is actually nothing new, but worth mentioning again. =)

Maybe they're porting that 360 game. I mean it's got Online in the title right?

But there can be so many things that can be considered hints. :(

There was that t-shirt that's being given out at that PAX event (I think?). That one had a P3rd logo in the inside of the neck. So that could mean that they'll announce a Vita version at TGS along with a worldwide release.

Just one of many possible outcomes.

Maybe Tri G will still be on 3DS but have online through Wii U similar to adhoc party?

The ad-hoc solution isn't really ideal. You really need some kind of lobby system for MH, to be able to find people around your own level of progress/gear/skill in the game. Tri's lobby system is annoying (hopping from gate to gate to find a group) but it's there at least.

When playing MHFU with ad-hoc party, you have to do the match-up outside the game (on the PS3), so you're pretty much left to the text chat to match up with other players. Which again involves room-hopping, but without the benefit of being able to view the others players' stats.

What the fuck. I own tri on Wii and enjoy it, but I'm not hardcore MH or anything, and these insane antics are actually causing backlash now, where I actively don't want to give the franchise any benefit of the doubt anymore, because they are acting like SUCH dicks, with NO respect for the consumer at all.

Ad-hoc party and other tunnel software are garbage. That's definitely not something I would care for. Not that I would expect Nintendo to ever offer something like that anyway.

Lol. So now it's this:

1. They are withholding an announcement because the game is lacking a feature that must be added before it releases.

2. They are withholding an announcement because the game is lacking a feature that will prevent it from being localized.

What's the point in toying with us like this? They could simply announce that the game is coming but will need more time to implement a feature, or they could stop teasing us about something that may not even exist if the game is actually in limbo without online.

I honestly think I'm over it.

Yeah, their approach seems pretty disingenous. You'd think they'd want to keep good relations with their fans up so they spread the word about MH/Capcom up on forums etc. Instead fans get hyped, disappointed and burn out their enthusiasm for the franchise. At the same time they are asking fans for stuff like this: https://twitter.com/Capcom_UK/status/236153497106673664
