NeoGAF Slot Cloggers (NHL 12 EASHL)

Madden is shit. Skating on grass, tackles that are shot out of cannons, lol AI and $$ plays.

Tried the NHL 13 demo once, felt better than 12! Then again I was playing on superstar with uhh, simulation settings.

for my real impressions:

THE GAME

-graphics got a nice touch up, ice looks way better, material the jerseys are made out of looks great and the lighting off the helmets is noticeably better. The faces seem a lot better except EA goofed and 90% of the guys in the demo have scary looking blue eyes.

-skating, what more needs to be said? It's at least 1,000,000 X better than last year. Love how players have "weight" now. How momentum matters. As long as that video is true and easy backskate goals are tuned I don't see it being exploited. Players don't seem to absorb hits these year as much and the poke check is super effective so if people think they are gonna waltz and twirl down the slot into the crease backwards, they have another thing coming.

-love every single one of the little new moves I've found

the chop is nice new option that works really good in the corners and up near the blue line chopping and chasing. It works better at the blueline than poking because you can chop and go around the guy in one motion whereas in NHL12 if you poked the puck past someone a lot of times you would end up running into him and not be able to get past.

the fake shot has at least 2 new variations, it becomes like a fake cross crease pass if you are moving fast enough and if you try it while backwards it gives a cool little fake drop pass that I can see myself getting people to bite on

the 45 degree moves are cool and if strength is tuned right, the power forward builds might be really effective crashing into the crease using this. It's a nice change of pace move that you can loose puck deke off and throw good defensemen some unexpected combos of moves to get by him

-passing is better because you can't magically throw the puck through guys as easy now. I haven't been able to test well enough if the super fast cross crease passes get thru and can be handled easily, but I would imagine so since they still didn't return to NHL11 passing where you were penalized for holding down the pass power too long which resulted in a bobble or miss. This needs to be back this year in one of the big patches. Moop is correct, the sauce has been improved, it actually lifts now everytime so it won't get hit by a stick on the ice of a lazy defender.

-goalies seem beatable still. Everyone that has played this can see how much better they play the cross-crease. I've gotten a ton of 5 hole goals already aiming there on purpose which is cool. Some of the some 1 on 1 moves still work from last year, but more than anything the game looks like it might reward you for finding the 1 spot the goalie leaves open. I expect good results from people who actually take a second and read the goalie this year rather than hold up and to a corner everytime.

CLUB STUFF

-one thing that stands out is the dump and chase is gonna be real effective this year. The offensive player especially if you aim the dump well and know where its going will get there almost everytime against the above average defensemen, especially early on in EASHL before players get used to the skating engine. We are gonna need to do a good bit dumping in NHL13.

The defensemen now have two big disadvantages on the dump and chase. The first is that it takes a significant amount of time to transition to a turn now when the puck goes over your head, and secondly, your momentum can cause you skate past or to the side of the puck and miss it completely if you get too eager and go after the puck too fast. It was pretty jarring the first time I ran into this going to retrieve one. As a d-man you gotta be real careful now with worrying about not going into a full stride at medium length distances or you lose your precision.

-forechecking is the other big one. Clubs are gonna be relentless because of how loose the puck can be and how effective the poke check is. There isnt a whole lot of skill needed now to effectively poke check where in NHL12 it has its nuances that you have to master to be good at it, swim will co-sign that as he learned from the bottom up. We will need to be even more aggressive on the forecheck that ever and use this change in the game to our advantage.

-seems like tipped pucks work a bit better so we should probably look into improving in that area too. Setting better screens and d-man making better decisions on how to shoot at the net (just throw high wristers, rather than bomb slapshots) to get these dirty goals.

im excited, looks like it plays a significantly better game of hockey which should in turn make this coming season of clubs the least frustrating and most enjoyable by far to this point.

I agree with the dump and chase being noticeably more effective, which I'm happy for. Can't wait to get going in in EASHL, it's going to take a lot more coordination to be a top team this year.

Seriously. The fact that you guys don't know Madden plays like Nancy Kerrigan's Figure Skating Sim makes me think you know less about football than the "B" team knows about hockey.

Viz, I appreciated your hilarious and poignant commentary. Tip of the hat, old chap.

Oh wow, anyone noticed the added settings for Vs and such? You can now alter PP carry, and neutral zone strategies, pretty cool.

Marv and I used to have a decent forecheck thing goin prior to 12. I HAVE FAITH

yea, I think we really gotta try to do some cycling this year too, the shit aint that hard

we need you guys bringing the pain again Slamjaw style and pestering the shit out of people, i think we can really trap people in there own ends this year with this forecheck shit as most of our forwards were already real good at it. We just need to get our spacing right and be more aggressive and it can be smothering for these poor souls that have to face us now that the poke check works so well.

Makes me wanna jizz.

no one is stopping you my friend

Stuff like this is what makes having a headset and USING it all the more important. If we know what everyone else is doing, it makes things a lot easier.

I downloaded the demo based on all the good press.

Here are my impressions: This progress bar is moving, albeit slowly. It's 1.33 gigabytes. Seems like a good size. But when she says it's a good size, you know that means it's too small. All in all, better than NHL 12 so far.

damn son we didnt even get the new thread up yet and you are throwing poisonous darts at people from behind cover... why don't you keep it real and just tell it like it is, and name names!

SWIM, what Marv wants to say, is your broke southern country bama ass, better skip a couple Nascar races and save some money to buy a goddamn headset this year you frugal fuck

Probably not far off.

this is some good shit here, dude found out the secret to the chop move, i was trying to figure it out for myself earlier but couldnt get it to work 100% of the time

http://youtu.be/u5gV5K1YibY

Sweet.

Edit: :lol Just scored off a chopped puck. Aimed it at the net and Quick just whiffed on it.

He sounds like a very pale skinned young man that spends all his time in his fortress of video games
That's amazingly accurate.

Completely inaccurate.

I played the demo. I know that I am revealing how little of 12 I played, but 13 feels the same as every other NHL game except it's slower or stickier. Like I wish I could push the analog stick up more in the hopes that I'll move faster. I guess that's physics or something. Also, hits feel the same to me. Passes and general lolly-gaggery is broken up more, which is admittedly good.

I'm sure for you savants it's a thoroughly revelatory experience, but for a dunce like ol' Laserbot, this game feels like chel.

Also, hasn't LT always turned you around? o_O

Maybe I downloaded the wrong demo. =|

LT did used to do it, but it's a lot more fluid and easier in this compared to the past.

For comparisons sake, I played a VS game in NHL 12 after playing the demo, and it feels like a completely different game. Players feel like their 10 pounds and go about 150 mph, where in 13 they have actual weight and momentum, and go natural speeds. Still going to take time to adjust to it, but it's necessary and good for the game.

Go back and play some of the old NHL games and you'll notice a huge difference right away.

Interesting, if used at the right times this could become really useful. I just got it down in free skate.

like i mentioned before it works well racing to loose pucks near your boards on your defensive blueline because you can reach around the defender who will need to be on the boards and chop it past him while going around him in one motion.

I've also played around with it on loose passes on the wall in the offensive zone. The thing that makes this kind of deadly is when you chop it your guy usually gets like a little boost and homes in towards where the puck was chipped if you chop it forward.

In free skate try saucing or passing the puck into the zone against the wall and then go after it and chop it in behind the net and watch how your guy dashes after it. I can see situations where you might be able to fool the shit out of someone thinking you are just going over to pickup the puck and chop it right past him.

Chop might also end up being the most reliable way to move the puck behind the net as a defensemen as I havent had a whole lot of luck with one touch passing, seems kind of unresponsive compared to last year.

Defense pairings are going to have to be a lot more aware for their partner as well, with these changes as Viz as said, gonna be a real pain in the ass when the other team dumps it, and d men can't pivot as quickly anymore.

A lot of people are complaining about that on the EA forums. Seems like they messed with it for 13.

What if they end up being more accurate than passes

Hmm.

Headbutting the puck is more accurate than passing can be at times.

Stop shitting on my team. Start shitting on my finger.
Yeah for D, there seems to be a BIG focus on positioning now, you can't just skate at the same speed and hit anymore, if you're out of position the forward WILL skate past you.

Also, going full speed with left stick clicked down, with Grabner who's ridiculously fast, he nearly loses the puck when I make a turn but foot-kicks it ahead and then just puts it in 5 hole. feels sooo goood.

Also, because slapshots from the Blueline don;t go on net/inside the net anymore, it's so much more satisfying when they do go in.

Also satisfying when scrub teams online can't sit there and fire off garbage slap shots all fucking game and have half of them go in.

Dunno if it's considered an exploit or not, but I'm having a lot of goals go in by driving down either wing, holding out your stick to the side as far as it will go then shooting top shelf.

Just did it 3 times with Mason Raymond of all players :lol

Yep definite exploit, just did it 4 times in one game.

I buy a new controller when NHL comes out every year. By the time the new one comes out, my controller is so worn out.
I assume that's from you smashing it against the wall when Wsoxfan takes a penalty while you're on a breakaway :lol

I can't even boost forward with my controller now, feels bad man.

clicking the left stick doesn't work? ouch lol. I have 2 controllers at hand, one black, one white, depending on how I feel like. Switching them up keeps them in reasonable condition.

It's a Halo 3 special edition controller, to say it's been through hell and back is an understatement.
That pissed me off so much. :lol
:lol I don't think I'll ever forget that, one of the funniest and stupidest penalties I've ever seen taken.

The kids at HF are saying that the passing is locked on to automatic instead of manual and the demo game speed is running at the lowest. No where near my xbox to check if true or not.

Have you found that players have different speeds and that getting a breakaway is easier in terms of racing for a loose puck?

Last year, I found that even the fastest guys in the game couldn't outskate Hal Gill when on a breakaway and everyone more or less maintained the same speed.

There is a noticeable difference when you use the hustle. The AI still has that stupid turbo but you can beat them to pucks more often now.

What i also like to see is that when you play HUT in the demo, giving a playet a +8 skating boost makes them noticeably faster. I played with Havlat and before boosting him I'd get hardly any breakaways, but after boosting he'a ridiculously fast.
