I am concerned that if this transition succeeds, the desktop will be phased out in Windows 9, rendering every major digital distributor bankrupt.
Really though? Reaaaaaaaly?

I don't think Windows 8 deserves the flack it's getting. I've been running it exclusively on my desktop since the Consumer Preview (now on RTM) and it's been nothing but a smooth experience.
I use Metro as a start menu replacement, but beyond that I never use Metro apps. You don't have to, and I don't know why people seem to think it's necessary.
Other than the start menu now being fullscreen, the rest of the experience is only improved upon/completely standard with Windows 7.
Not to mention, you can uninstall the apps you don't want.
What will the difference be like going from Vista straight to 8?
he's actually a fan of Windows 8 overall. not that you'd know that from that selective quote though.
it's a useless OS for desktop users.
As we are all gamers, the main thing about this is that Win 8 will have DirectX 11.1 support, which doesn't mean shit.
So you can safely skip this garbage.

in b4 people claiming Gabe Newell was right.

Funny thing is though, everything bad about Windows 8 could be said about Steam too.
Well to be honest at least Steam is multi-platform so the walled garden argument isn't as valid for Steam as it is for Windows 8 and as I understood that is one of Gabe's points against Windows 8. Also Steam doesn't restrict anyone from making games and selling them outside Steam. Microsoft only allows Metro-style apps to be sold in the Windows App store.
Can you navigate Metro with a xbox360 controller?
Haha, thanks to this thread, I finally decided to try out the RC for Windows 8.
I'll post my opinion after actually checking out the OS.![]()

Apparently not.
You're better to post that kind of rational in the OT section. Gabe said it was bad, do not expect proper dialogue here
; )
This is true more or less, but it's even worse when the same entity controls both the OS and distribution. See: consoles.Funny thing is though, everything bad about Windows 8 could be said about Steam too.
That sucks...
Would been perfect as simulating a console interface. Just start the PC get directly to metro with a SSD hdd, and after that select the new steam interface that is coming next month.
Will skip and wait for windows 9.
People are really discussing a 1% difference?
Did this thread talk about margin errors yet?
Exactly. It completely overlooks those people who dislike it from a perfectly valid position of fundamental ignorance.Stop that inane, condescending argument, like every negative opinion from a gamer is because Gabe or someone else dislikes the OS.
There... are people who live with Vista yet? ...willingly!?
Funny thing is though, everything bad about Windows 8 could be said about Steam too.
No it can't. There are no hardware devices where the only games you can run are from the Steam store. Steam doesn't limit games/applications the way the Windows store does. Steam isn't from Microsoft which has had a terrible track record. The two aren't even remotely comparable except in the most trivial sense as digital storefronts.Funny thing is though, everything bad about Windows 8 could be said about Steam too.
Aren't they expected to do just that in the near future? And you can run whatever software you like on Windows 8. You're talking about Windows RT, Microsoft's iOS competitor. No it can't. There are no hardware devices where the only games you can run are from the Steam store.
No, it just limits them in a different way.Steam doesn't limit games/applications the way the Windows store does.
Hmm.Steam isn't from Microsoft which has had a terrible track record.
And in some tests there's a pretty dip in performance.
As planned, skipping Windows 8.
Shit the thing isn't even out yet for it to perform at already at 100% in most cases it is a good upgrade for those who have not moved to windows 7 yet. which is more than 50% of all pc users.
Steam isn't from Microsoft which has had a terrible track record.
Well, yeah. But Vista was so shit at the beginning and it got such a bad rep to battle against throughout its lifetime... 8 might have gotten some bad press, but nothing of that sort. Not even Vista-exclussive DX10 and Halo 2 as baits made gamers jump in.
Why not move to 7 instead?Shit the thing isn't even out yet for it to perform at already at 100% in most cases it is a good upgrade for those who have not moved to windows 7 yet. which is more than 50% of all pc users.
Wow.
If a user hasn't moved to 7, I don't see any valid reason to move to 8.
Well, yeah. But Vista was so shit at the beginning and it got such a bad rep to battle against throughout its lifetime... 8 might have gotten some bad press, but nothing of that sort.
That said, I don't see a substantial amount of people upgrading immediately. Maybe when one or two service packs have dropped... I dunno.
Why not move to 7 instead?
As of now, I see the skip one -> buy one adage holding up. 98 ->Me-> XP ->Vista-> 7 ->8-> 9
its $30 for an update from 7. I already tried 7 and the extras are worth it why bother with 7 when it is exactly the same as 7 plus all the extras which I can customise.
Why do I get the sense that there's just a lot of weird defensiveness about either not wanting to upgrade or being willing to?
You got all kinds of people: Innovators, Early Adopters, Early Majority, Late Majority and Laggards (thanks, Geoffrey Moore). And each of these comments bashing 8 or liking 8 just throws that person in one of those buckets. Which are all fine to be in.
Just so strange to watch all the emotion. Ahhh the internet.
