It makes me wonder why the first three episodes of Sankarea had such gorgeous background art when the show was directed by a Shinbo disciple.

You can "improve" things without completely changing art designs though. The fact that there is such a huge change means one of two things:

a) They didn't give a crap about the initial broadcast and put zero actual thought into the design of backgrounds, so when they decided to actually put some thought into it, they came up with completely different ideas.

b) After working on the broadcast versions, they changed their minds on what they felt would be the right direction to approach the design of the backgrounds, and completely redesigned them because they had a new and different idea after completing the original production.

Both these possibilities say very bad things about the production approach of the show. This is not about being slavish to an original release. It is about revisionism itself being bad. It should not be encouraged. Creators should think carefully about what they want to put out when they release something, instead of just doing whatever and then changing their minds later. Once you put something out there, it is out there, and should continue to be made available at the very least for archival purposes. Releasing something and then trying to erase it from existence because you changed your mind is a offense against art.

Somehow I missed all this. Well said.

It's okay, I hate her too. I only appreciate her existence because of how well Momiji and the other oddball cast plays off of her. I know I'm not alone there.
Just because the unlikable protagonist isn't being tortured at every waking moment doesn't mean a work can't be good. I'm assuming it's popular because of the rest of the cast, which play off each other so damn well in both content and delivery that I'm surprised so many people are complaining.

Dammit, where's Articalys? Back me up on this, dude.
I'll take your word for it, since it's obviously successful by some measure. But when the worst character is the anchor of the show, it's hard to take it. lol

Since when? Straight men are fuckin buzzkills, dude. Why do you think Shinpachi is so unpopular?
Shinpachi is a buzzkill because he's normal, not because he's despicable!

Why do you think you're being sexist? (Eh, nevermind. I read the top post on this page. I getcha)

I think both Momoji and Ichiko are assholes. They almost got Keita killed because of their stupid shit.
Yeah, but somehow Ichiko makes me sympathize with Momiji. That's how bad she is. lol

Not loading for me for some reason.

Somehow I missed all this. Well said.
Hey, if BioWare is allowed to change their ending twice, so can Shaft.

The Light of El Cantare
One of us! One of us!
Also, this loli-vampire can transform into non-loli. Instant hit!

Once we hit her second transformation in Kizumonogatari, we'll finally have the most universally crowd-pleasing anime character ever.

It's not like I was going to do anything with this $350 anyway.

The mantra of home shopping's bored 1% housewives everywhere.

It's not even that the background art is terrible, which it is, but its the implication (seemingly justified) that SHAFT don't even know what background art is for or how it should be used.

They're much more successful when they just stick to one well-made background that they use for 90% of the episdode a la Natsu no Arashi. It was almost like watching the animated equivalent of a stage play at times.

I almost feel like my dislike for their designs is irrational at this point. It's got something to do with the eyes and the mouth, probably the lack of a nose too (which is weird because a lot of anime characters lack noses).

It is kind of funny thinking of different character designs from, say the 90s, where the characters had really pointy noses and comparing them to more recent shows where characters seem to be lacking a nose almost altogether.

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Haha. Well, while I would agree that Futayo in my avatar is busty, to me she's more "regular busty" and more modest sized compared to many of the other girls. For me it's not something I think about when she's onscreen. Chiwa Saito's character Kimi Aoi though has a really large bust and the staff seems to make sure to emphasize that and it's more distracting and off putting for me.

Kentucky.

Sorry but I'm not understanding this one.

I know Eiken would be a :Chet show but are the others too? I don't really know anything about them. You should take a look at watching Horizon maybe because it's got quite a bit of :Chet as you probably already know.

I wasn't expecting a serious response. Thanks for taking some time to spell it out for me!

Sure. If you actually do want to carry on watching the show, I can see if I can help you out if you want.

I thought everyone here was watching Accel World (and SAO) regardless of whether or not it is bad.

I thought about watching them initially when they first started airing but ultimately chose to watch other shows for now. I'll probably watch them later at some point though.

I don't have anybody on my Ignore List right now, and I usually don't. I was just responding to cajun's post.

I don't have anyone on my ignore list either.

I'm glad Type-Moon's mature, sophisticated universe was enough to offset Urobuchi's stupidity.
Two wrongs can make a right! *hasn't seen Fate/Zero* He wasn't the head writer, so I don't think it counts. Or maybe it doesn't count because it partly belongs to Type-Moon. *ponders*

Do I want to know what this is? Does she clone herself and then make out with herself?

That's being kind, but I figure I should agree because it's their secret best show. :p

Oh yes, the woman-punching hobo!

I'm 90% sure that's what you're supposed to be doing. Momiji is the more sympathetic character and it's brought up. Should be a whole arc about it at the end of the show.
She's only sympathetic in comparison though. Although, I almost feel like she has to amp her horribleness up in order to compensate for Ichiko's horribleness. lol

(I'd probably like the show a lot more if Momiji was the main character and it was about her trying to deal with this insufferable person that she's forced to be around).

Hidamari Sketch x365 10

This episode perfectly encapsulated the combination of heartwarming and light humor that makes this show such a joy to watch. It never fails to bring a smile to my face. Getting to see Yuno interact with her parents - a loving representation of concerned parents everywhere - was a treat.

The only show where their lazy backgrounds really work is Hidamari Sketch because the minimalist and random abstract designs(accidentally?) complement the themes of the series.

Hidamari Sketch definitely has a lot of abstract, random backgrounds, which Shaft can get away due to the art school setting, but it does every now and them have some stylized backgrounds with a clear point to them. For example, in this episode:

The ellipses in this background represent the awkward silence between Yuno and her father and their uncertainty of what to say to each other now that her mother walked away for a bit.

Bake and Nise are both exceptionally popular. I would say they are more accessible than you are giving them credit for.

Eh, they're exceptionally popular otaku-works which isn't the same thing as being accessible at all. I tend to think of 'accessible' in terms of works that you don't need to be a super-nerd to get into, like Summer Wars.

Momiji IS the main character. Hell, she's the titular character. She's just sharing the spotlight with Ichiko and now Ranmaru.

Urobuchi is easily the most well known writer in anime at the moment (that I can actually write that sentence is kind of amazing, isn't it?) so I imagine there'll be more people excited than just cosmic.
Well yes, but
newtaminA + Urobuchi seems like a very :cosmic combination. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why haven't you seen Fate Zero? It was amazing even by monocle standards.
Waiting for the second season to be out on Blu-ray. >_>

What about K-On? :D

So it looks like they published the first staff list for the Mondai-Ji-tachi ga Isekai Kara Kuru Sō Desu yo anime on the official site (click the button marked "new" near the upper-right).

Series Director: Keizou Kusakawa (Dog Days S1, Campione, everything Nanoha since A's)
Director: Yasutaka Yamamoto (Squid Girl S2)
Series Composition: Noboru Kimura (Nyaruko-san, Amagami SS+)
Character Design: Naomi Ide (Lotte no Omocha)
Animation Production: Diomedea (Squid Girl, Campione)

Looks good enough for me. I would've tried it anyway, I guess.

The Light of El Cantare
You rang?

There were no bells involved, actually, but, hey, whatever works.

firehawk is in the midst of a moral crisis and you're the only one that can soothe his tortured soul. Or condemn it, if he actually did something wrong.

Sorry but I'm not understanding this one.

You can't get much more :chet than Eiken. I haven't even heard of the other shows, so I wouldn't know.
And I've been planing to start watching Horizon eventually.

The Light of El Cantare
In Nise,
isn't her transformation temporary?

My memory is bad on that particular point, but it's at least indicated that the act in question can now be performed at will by her, meaning that a "reversion" wouldn't be permanent either, I guess.

Doesn't count! Pure Urobuchi or bust. Would you call a [book adaptation] a(n) [author] production?

I guess that depends on whether said author sat in on every single script meeting personally and actively participated in the direction of the screenplays and alternations in the content.

Keep this in mind, everyone in the K-ON! thread can play an instrument to an almost professional standard.

I can play several instruments! Some of them much better than others but learning new instruments is a very fund and rewarding experience! >_>

The show being centered around a music club is what initially drew me towards it but I stayed for the cute.

All that K-On talk reminds me that I should get around to watching the 2nd season. Because I don't have a choice.

I loathed and despised the first season so much, and I keep stalling every time I try to progress through the 2nd. I hate this show, nothing more than utter contempt for this lousy franchise. It is the worst form of otakubait trash. I'm just glad the franchise is finally dead.

Still doesn't c- okay fine, I guess that counts then.

As an authority figure on classifying otaku bait, I have to strongly disagree. *pops out license* K-On! has pandering, but it's far from the worst.

The Light of El Cantare
I actually like some of SHAFT's background art, particularly in Bakemonogatari. It's weird and oddly minimalistic.

I even use some of them as my desktop backgrounds!

That first one with Kaiki would be the perfect desktop background for me if the trees didn't uniformly cut off at the same length. I guess I could crop it slightly.
