What if the Mark V helmet is a 343Industries Employee exlcusive? You know like the flaming helmets in past games.

Not enough bandwidth

Also, just feel like sharing it: I now weigh 255, down from 280/285 in April. Between the pic of me at the HBO breakfast in 2011 and the HaloGAF dinner in 2012, I'm at least 40 pounds lighter (because I'm pretty sure I was past 290 in 2011).

Once again a big hi5 to Tashi for helping me out with getting started on that. It'll probably also help me to be in Nebraska for the next couple of weeks, full keto diet is actually affordable down here :lol

Here's what I don't understand about armor DLC...

Everyone would be forced to download it to view it in-game. So if they sold them as strictly armor DLC, or added them as a bonus to a map pack or something, it presents the same problem.

Such is the catch 22 of armor bonuses. You have to give everyone the data so people that bought the armor access are actually seen wearing the armor. So basically you either put it on the disc or you make everyone download it. In that case it's better to be on the disc because a) bandwidth b) it can eat your one free DLC pack that MS gives you.

Congrats. Weight loss is really challenging, glad you're making headway. Lots of folks are doing well around here lately (Ellis, and I ran into Dan Miller at PAX who doing great as well). Great to see.

Good job, man!

I use to weigh 242, now I'm down to 158.

Hey I still stand by my decision to never pick up flag. Ok wait only if the flag carrier somehow dies inches away from scoring then I'll get the points. And I'm sure matching with other players will be excellent just like Reach, progression exp system and all.

You sound like a great teammate.

Good thing flag will be in its own playlist. Just don't enter that playlist. Problem solved.

But I love running flag...when I could juggle it. Nah man I will just avoid picking up the flag. Now I feel obligated to yell at my teammates to pick up flag.

Woo weight loss Gaf. I'm starting a P90X/X2 hybrid next week. That whole week of PAX goodness killed me. Been through Couch to 5K, P90X, P90X2, and Insanity now.

Anywho, CTF is fine folks.

"psshhhhhh our version of CTF is way better than the one you've been playing for four games and is generally regarded as one of the classic halo gametypes don't worry about it"-343 Industries

I find it hilarious that people who haven't played are the most vocal about how bad H4 is, but the people who have played it, have generally very high praise for the game. I think I'd rather trust those guys than angry message board guys.

Not being able to drop the flag is annoying for a separate reason, but you're effectively doing the same thing with Halo 4's implementation; broadcasting yourself while moving at regular movement speed. The juggling aspect is just superfluous.

I don't trust any indication of what the game's going to be like until at least two months after release. Can't put much stock into either prejudging without knowing the whole picture or having limited experiences with something new possibly colour impressions positively.

4 day PAX is going to kill everyone's body, soul, and waistlines.

You're that guy in CTF in H2,H3,Reach, and H4, aren't you? Mr shooty no picky. Also, for the last time, the military ranks aren't used for matching at all. Not even slightly considered.

Yeah, I met David and Allison last year before PAX started, David and Frankie are clearly in the lead here on the rest of us. They got the early unlocks.

people not to play with in HaloGAF: Pop, Elzar

Aww man...

I really just hate the fact I can't drop the flag. Not being able to juggle is fine with me but not even giving us the option to drop it in customs seems so aggravating to me. I'm sure I'll pick up flag every once and awhile when I'm carrying rockets to be able to save myself...oh wait

No I'm not.

If we can't even drop the flag then why should I pick it up if I can't even properly defend myself. Not to mention I'll have a BIG "Kill Me" sign above my head, no more sneaky flag caps. Trueskill works great huh?

That's another thing. Defensive play is going to have to step it up too. The flag can't be returned and it's so much easier to pick up. The defensive line so to speak is going to have to set up in between the flag and the opponent's base. People sprinting in to touch it will be an annoying tactic if you defend to far ack into your own base.
It seems to me like offense will have a harder time with the new changes, not defense. The flag return and reset were never different enough for it to be meaningful (TU CTF has 10 second return/15 second reset, while on-disc CTF has 15/30, and even that's only useful if you get there right away), and sitting on it for a return was a deathtrap in Reach so people didn't do it often. Offense has to deal with the carrier being a beacon now in a game where people spawn with crossmapping rifles, and the carrier can't pull out normal weapons in a pinch. Maybe I'm misreading it from the matches we've seen, but it seems like the ability to get a clean capture against a team that's paying attention is more dependent on the ability to outslay them than before. We'll see, I guess. While I think I've made my reservations about the changes pretty clear, it'll be fun to have a period in a Halo game again where people have to devise new strategies around mechanics we haven't seen before. It hasn't happened in a while.

A lot of it depends on the map, though, and I expect that having larger maps in general will help some of the issues.

I just realized part of the genius of the Flagnum: if you pick up the flag accidentally you can't even suicide in frustration. No grenade throwing.

I wish I had time to play a proper game at PAX. While I see circumstantial issues with some of the decisions, on balance I'll be surprised if it doesn't prove more popular. And a popular, and thus populated, flag playlist is what I've been wanting in matchmaking for a while.

I just hope 1-flag gets added in the mix.

I don't understand why you people are complaining about not having the option to drop flag

Have you any idea how many resources that would take?

They'd have to map it to a button
Make an animation for it
Record dialogue to let you know you dropped the flag
Make a text box saying "not carrying flag anymore"
They'd have to calculate flag dropping physics and whatnot
Make a hud indicator for other players to know you dropped the flag

Clearly none of you knows how videogames work, so don't complain please

That's pretty much what I do and adding in cardio and some heavy weights. Don't know how far you are in insanity, but it's a great workout. Really hard the first few times you do it but really satisfying getting through the workout.

Your new tag is hilarious with your classic avatar.

For weightGAF: I've lost like 20 pounds and still don't look any thinner. :( on the plus side that means I can probably lose even more now that I'm working out too.

Maybe 343 will be nice and give us new free armor in title updates.

It's team capture the flag, not "capture the flag all by myself when it's most convenient and there is no one around shooting at me."

Or just jump off the side of the map. Unless all of the CTF maps in Halo 4 are canyons :O

I wonder if there are softkills present and if those softkills take the flag out of your hands.

True, though not all maps will have places to jump off, or at least ones convienient at any given point in time.

(I jumped off the Forerunner map by accident at PAX.)

Yeah. It's going to alter the dynamic of when you go for the flag a bit, especially since you get a target painted on your back. I'm really interested in how that will change the game. I can game stuff out in my head, but things often play out differently.

I'm a bit of a flag ninja, so this will affect me.

I'm talking playing strictly with random people. I would be a greater assest killing the enemy team the picking up flag and praying that my team has my back. Cause you know what type of players you get searching alone.

(Ill ask my question(s) just one more time just incase someone smarter than me actually reads it)

Has it ever been acknowledged that additional armor is possible through DLC?

Is there a precedent in other games of adding non-map content like this?

They couldnt do it with Reach, was this simply because Reach wasnt a flexible enough system to allow it?

With 343 handling Halo 4 from the beginning do you think they left the side door unlocked so they could work this in later?

Plus, dropping the flag would open up so many potential animation glitches. There would be no way to test it with the current company bandwidth.

HE WILL FUCKING RETURN

I'd LOL if that was just a helmet for 343 employees so they had something like the Bungie flames for Reach to give out. People getting all worked up for a helmet they would haven't been able to have just sounds hilarious and possible :p

LoL you really have a waypoint above your head when you pick up flag?

Isn't it the defending teams responsibility to keep dibs on flag, watch, and call out where their flag is? No, no, this is Casual City.

IMO, I don't find this more casual, I find it more strategic. Now you actually have to have a competent team and a solid plan if you really want to capture the flag. Instead of one dude running in, grabbing the flag, and hiding in the rocks for 15 minutes you actually have to plan how you are going to push for the flag AND get it back to the base.

Does anybody else in HaloGAF need to gain weight? Or am I the only one?

Once a week? If you really want to gain weight, try 5 or 6 times a week(it's a lot but worth it) and get a individual workout for each muscle group. That way your exercise specific muscles each day and the progress is faster/better.

Stress and lack of sleep can actually be detrimental to weight loss. So how did you use those to your advantage?

Yes. I think not being able to drop it could lead to some fun times, but also a lot of frustrating ones. I think the Flagnum is a cool idea, I understand auto pickup and am OK with it, but not being able to drop it is...just not cool. I think its a bad usability decision. Taking that type of choice away isn't good.

Yeah, you will probably be really bad at this mode and not stand a chance. Because the casuals willl just dominate you now that we gave them a waypoint. There are definitely no new skills to learn and basically little kids will just rest stuff on your chin from now on.

I mean, that's great and all in theory but I've never had as much fun with CTF as I had with CE when flag carrying wasn't limited in any way. I mostly roll with randoms, and having the game's design more oriented towards team coordination sounds great, but it only really serves to produce a doom scenario for me. I like CTF in general, it's one of my favourite modes in Quake, Team Fortress, Tribes and CE and what they all have in common is being able to handle flags unhindered. I just don't like it when a game forces team roles by handicapping you in some way to do it.

Though I don't have much of an outcry with 4's handling of it, even with juggling I didn't care for the downgrades to flag carrying from 2 on. I just don't see my stance changing on that come release.

I believe the waypoint says "Look I'm right here come kill me before I score your flag". And forget about sneaky caps now.

"At least once a week" does not mean "once a week", guys.

Sorry, but you get the point.

If you start working out for 5 or 6 days as I said, you'll do nothing but gain weight for the first 6 months.

I gained 20kg doing that and without having to take any "stuff" to help.

That's the one piece I don't quite understand. I get that the decision to arm the flag carier with the Flagnum and the decision to disable the ability to drop the flag are related. But I can't quite figure out why they went that route.

The overall set of changes seems to be focused on making the game simpler, and faster. Simpler in the removal of things like flag juggling, and in not knowing where your flag is. It's in the way UI elements make the implicit explicit (someone has the flag, I should defend it...by following the waypoint and killing the guy like the announcer told me). Faster in the movement of the carrier, and the fact that you have a waypoint placed on you (no hiding with the flag, no searching for its location). I think those things will change the way the game plays, but I don't think that's an automatically bad thing. It will just be an adjustment.

But you can have all those things while still being able to drop it. Can't quiet figure out how that fits in.

It's not that people are worried about the casuals dominating, or anything like that. People are worried or expressing concern because an entire mechanic that's been in CTF since Halo 1, intentional or not, has been removed.

When carrying the flag in Halo 2, 3, or Reach, there was no indicator or waypoint when the flag was held in your hands. This made being sneaky with your flag caps an option if the enemy team was unaware or in bad positions.

Conversely, you could move the flag faster with the trade off of having your position revealed because the waypoint appears above the flag each time it's dropped.

I thought perhaps the waypoint was there to keep the games moving at PAX, and that in standard matchmaking the CTF mode would be slightly altered.

I'm not horribly upset at the change or demanding it's removal either. I don't want to be misunderstood here. I'm excited to see how the new version of CTF plays.

I'm just trying to help convey why certain people are expressing concern or questioning the change.

Radar elevation indicators, waypoints over the flag carrier, promethean vision, and you can't drop the flag to defend yourself once you have it... good luck escaping with that flag! Imagine playing this with a team of randoms? ugh.
