Game Informer's exclusive New Super Mario Bros. U trailer

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Keen, but level design looks a little bland. Strange too, coming off the back of the excellent NSMB2 level design. NSMBU hasn't clicked with me yet, even if I'm going to launch day it anyway.

I love how the water and clouds are moving in the background (or the clouds shadows). Also in the cave level there is there are small water drops (around 40 seconds in). Everything looks simply amazing, glad I have it preordered

I don't get what's so bland about the NSMB art style.

The only problem for me is that it has the plasticy shine which they got rid of in NSMB2 but not this game.

Apart from that it's pretty much the same art style that's been in all the SMB games just reimagined in 3D.

I know, it just doesn't have much depth to it, which gets on my nerves. I'd love it if they took advantage of the technology and gave it a 3D look (like LittleBigPlanet's depth, obviously not the same aesthetic, though) with the smooth, plastic, 2D style. Kind of like what SM3DL had going for it at points, except make it purely 2D platforming.

Sorry to be a combo breaker, but to me it's not impressive. Looks like the 6 year old DS game with better resolution. After Rayman Origins and now Legends this just looks mediocre.

I kind of agree. Rayman Legends seems way more impressive, though I'd like to see this in person first. And maybe have someone break down how it compares to Legends technically.

Haven't played a Mario since Galaxy 1 though.

Why can't they give Mario a less-vacant expression?

And, why do they always use the most dull music in these trailers?

That beanstalk level...I want it.

I think the level design they showed in the trailers for NSMB2 was kinda blah. They seem to be pretty good at not spoiling a lot of the HOLY SHIT! moments before you play the game.

It really doesn't look particularly inspired or exciting in any respect.

Is it fair to judge that stuff from trailers? Unlike Movies and other games, Nintendo always shows just a fraction of their Mario games, always from the first, simpler levels.

I think that would go against what they're trying to achieve in the SMB games though, everything that you can stand on needs to be instantly recognisable in a split second. If they started fucking about with depth I feel like they'd lose some of that.

Looks okay. Still not impressed with the NSMB art style in general. But it's sure to be a lot of fun in multiplayer.

That makes sense. I guess it's just something I should embrace.

Feels so standard, so plastic. Right down to the way they clap when you do something good.

I feel like this is actually the least consistent NSMB game yet. Maybe of all mainline Mario games..

Yes. That's why they release it, they hope we will judge it to be good and buy the game.

Not at all, but it is all I have to go off. Hence why I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and picking it up anyway.

I suppose my lukewarm impressions of the trailers is worsened by the surprise at how nicely designed NSMB2 was.

If you really want more experimental art styles in 2d platformers you'll get them in other nintendo series like kirby and donkey kong, maybe a yoshi's story game or wario land.

Looks good, but I think they should title the series differently. And that NEW! badge part of the logo makes it look cheap for whatever reason.

Nintendo has a habit of only showing early-world bland levels in their prerelease press. They did it with NSMBW, NSMB2, SML3D, and now this game.

It makes sense if you consider the "New" part as "Neo" (like NeoGAF), as in a different version of the original that goes off by itself, which the NSMB series very much is.

Since this is a launch title, wouldn't be surprised seeing a 2D Mario in another vein/artstyle in the WiiU gen. Most likely without the "new" label. Kinda like Yoshi's Island was so different to SMW.

The "New!" it's already ingrained in that style and music, can't ditch it, specially when it has been so successful sales wise.

mmm looks like fun. Will play eventually.

nsmb2 kind of surprised me as well, so I can see where you're coming from here.

yeah, even though i have no nostagic love for old 2d mario gaf loves, i would like to see nintendo try and do super mario bros 4 and have it be crazy and experimental. Release it on 3ds maybe

Same. I like the simple, blocky aesthetic.

I just want new level themes, and less recycled elements.

They aren't going to show super amazing stuff like the bone coaster in the trailers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFxJ0F1xzSo

We pretty much know bone coasters are in the game, though, since they were featured in 2011. They had a level where you were on a bone coaster in the dark.
