Halo |OT9| One Final Effort Is All That Remains

Anyways its not the D3 thread I was just mentioning how the different companies handle their games differently. Its interesting to look at it from a new perspective.

But the funny thing is that D3 and HaloGAF discussions mirror each other: a lot of people who loved the old game and complain bitterly about the new ones. The hate from D2 fans for D3 makes HaloGAF hate pale in comparison.

Of course, the D2 fans are right so maybe they aren't comparable. :)

I don't have much cash to spend, but I'm looking to play through Halo CE Anniversary before 4 comes out. If I buy it used, do I still get the Anniversary maps for Reach?

It's hard to believe that five years have passed since Halo 3's release. We may have finished that fight, but it seems an entirely new fight is on the horizon. As we patiently await the release of Halo 4, let's celebrate Halo 3's anniversary with a quick art challenge!

The Contest:
Use MS Paint to draw your favorite campaign moment from Halo 3. You can depict a scene from gameplay or from a cutscene, it's up to you. Don't worry if you're not super artistic - if I wanted a masterpiece I wouldn't restrict this contest to MS Paint!

A celebrity judge will select one entry as "Judge's Choice". There are no official selection criteria - the judge will simply pick a favorite based on personal preference. (So it might be the funniest entry, the most impressive entry, a favorite scene, etc.) All identifying info will be removed from the entries before the judging takes place to ensure an impartial decision.

A random lottery of all the remaining entries will be done for a smaller prize.

The Prize:

thursday.jpg

Judge's Choice (One Winner) - Halo: The Thursday War paperback book. (Or any Halo book from Amazon that is less than $12 before shipping.)
Random Pick (Three Winners) - One ONI patch (Example) and one custom-made button (Example).

Rules:
- Anyone can enter - you don't have to be a member of HaloGAF. Lurkers welcome.
- Original artwork only, please! Don't use a screenshot or someone else's art.
- If you don't have MS Paint, feel free to use a similar drawing program to create your entry. Just please do NOT use something fancy like Photoshop - keep to the spirit of crappy MS Paint drawings!
- There is no minimum size requirement, but please do not submit anything larger than 1920x1080.
- You are limited to ONE official entry per person, but you are free to send another image before the deadline if you want to replace a previous entry or just contribute more art.
- When the time comes for the selection of the Judge's Choice, I will first remove all identifying info from the entries to ensure an impartial decision is made.
- There is no set criteria for the judge's selection; the winner may be chosen based on humor, artistic merit, plot moment depicted, etc. This is left to the judge's discretion.
- INTERNATIONAL ENTRANTS: This contest is NOT restricted to US-only, but if you win a prize and live outside the US please understand the extra difficulty in prize shipping. We'll work something out, possibly through bookdepository.com, just know that I'd rather not spend $25 to ship a $10 book.

Deadline:
- Entries must be received by 5:00pm EDT on Monday, October 1st.
- Contest winners will be announced no later than the following Friday.

How to enter:
- Email your entries to ncsuDuncan@gmail.com.
- Be sure to attach the image file.
- Please include "HaloGAF Contest" in the email subject line.
- Put a forum username and the title for your drawing (or a brief description) in the body of the email so I know what I'm looking at.

Good luck!

(For future reference, this info can be found at HaloGAF.com. Feel free to invite others to participate.)

You can play the Anniversary maps directly from the disc, but only in the three available playlists: Anniversary Classic (4v4 Slayer/Objective w/Anniversary settings), Anniversary FFA (8 player Slayer/Objective/Infection w/TU or Anniversary settings), or Anniversary Firefight (Installation 04 w/default Reach settings).

As for the map pack code, buying used is pretty much a guarantee that you will not get it, unless you buy it from Gamefly.

I was looking at Amazon, but Gamefly looks even cheaper. Does Gamefly guarantee the original packaging or something? Why would the code be included with them but not others?

Gamefly only mails the disc for rentals. They retain the original packaging materials for resale.

Also, major tip to those in the MSPaint contest: when working on the lineart by itself it's possible to use "layers" of sorts. Put down all your rough sketches. If you're using one of the lame recent MSPaints that gives you actual okay brushes, make SURE you use a pixellated brush/pencil. When you're done, draw over them in black using a brush or pixels or something. When you want to get rid of the sketchiness, use the eyedropper tool to make your foreground (front) color the same gray/red/whatever you used for your sketches. Then, switch to the eraser, and go over the grays, but do it by holding down right-click. If your background paint color's white, then it'll eliminate the sketches and replace it with white! From there you can just proceed to color stuff in.

I just landed on the leg of the Scarab, the leg went up and I got ragdolled into the damn stratosphere.

I don't think that's ever happen before

My first game of Halo 3 was Territories on Valhalla in Big Team. Won 10-4 and went +4.

Heh, tool of destruction was Frag Grenade.

Good times.

Is this a MP guy?

Judging from the back of his head there, I can definitely say that he has at least worked on firefight DLC in the past. The rest is kinda unclear and hairy...

Spartan Ops guy.

O rly? I guess it's that then.

Halo 3? I was doing that yesterday. Didn't fly up to the stratosphere though...

:lol I loved doing that. You can basically "drive" the Scarab if you figure out which player it's targeting, kill all of its occupants, and stand on it. Also, fun fact: if you get three people alive on the Scarab it becomes "safe" to respawn on it for the 4th player.

First game on Halo 3 was on Epitaph Rumble Pit, was first and went +14, tool of destruction........melee.

I got the game on launch but didn't play online until November since I didn't have gold.

So about this limited edition Art Book, will it be available on Amazon etc.?

A thought on control schemes:

One of the biggest problems I have with the Halo 4 control schemes is that it makes it seem as though as a player, I am going to have to decide between jumping and shooting (Bumper Jumper), or effective AA use (Default/ Recon).

I chose to use Bumper Jumper in Halo 3, because I found myself outclassed time and again by people who could jump mid BR battle but keep aiming at my head effectively. Despite having a good BR, the split second it took to take my thumb off the analogue stick to jump literally cost me the battle. After switching to BJ I found myself using a playstyle which allowed me to BR effectively and because of this I would never go in for a melee, essentially I would do my best to stay out of melee range. It was too costly.

Why did I explain that? Quite simply I think that having melee on one of the bumpers is a waste, it can be useful sure but generally that most players on BJ will want to be involved in the gun game and stay just beyond melee distance. Using AA’s is not dangerous compared to using melee’s – the net payoff is far greater, so I would say that as a player they are a more useful tool to me.

Going back to deciding between default and Bumper Jumper, I think a third control scheme could work wonders – base it off Bumper Jumper:

Now place melee on B, Action/Reload on X and armour abilities on RB:

Now you have a control scheme which will feel natural for people who melee on B (people who play default Halo 3) whilst allowing the more important pillars of the game to be on the more accessible buttons.

Another thing I have issues with especially with Bumper Jumper – is that you have to hold X to use the ability in some cases. The hardlight shield is an AA which becomes less useful to someone using bumper jumper, because they cannot effectively look around while using it. That control scheme I mentioned would resolve those issues for Bumper Jumper users. If however the AA is not on the bumper, the only other way to make AA’s more usable in other control schemes is to have an option for ‘Toggle AA’ (Overdoziz idea!) which would function in the same manner as the toggle crouch function works. Essentially allowing BJ users to use armour abilities like the Hardlight Shield, and even to a lesser extent the jetpack more effectively – they wouldnt need to hold a face button down and can instead go back to using the analogue stick.

EDIT: I imagine this has been discussed already, and its probably too late too change it, but I kind of wanted to put down on paper why im not so sure I like BJ or Defualt in Halo 4.

If anyone wants to pick up a shirt, there's the link. I don't make money off of these shirts or anything like that so don't worry, I'm not pimping it for that. It's just there if people want them. They are quite sexy and comfy

Yea, I spent a good 10 minutes just standing on it yesterday. Interestingly, similar to the elephant, the scarab has it's own gravity/physics system.
So your spartan, his physics and camera will be parented off of the scarab's. You can jump in the air near the edge of the scarabe while its turning clockwise,
and if it turns counterclockwise while your still in the air, your spartan will just reverse direction mid-air instead of flying off the edge like he should. it looks pretty funny from third person.

On the elephant, you can float forge objects and turrets that will stay still in the air relative to the vehicle.
I got some funny looking screenshots where I am using an upside down turret to floats above/along-with a moving elephant.

I want to play Halo 3. My mythic disc is scratched.

Also, the jump drive link Juices was referring to earlier. I need it. Plz.

It feels like it's always either matchmaking dumping on me, or the other team.

C'est la vie.

I'm at the point where I don't even play alone now. That is unless I'm fucking salivating to play which has been happening since I started watching Ninja's stream.

Despite the talk of visible ranking systems, AA abuse, shitty maps etc. I think the biggest contributor to Reach's performance vs Halo 3 is the matchmaking.

It just makes it so difficult to enjoy the game.
