If it's selling well and makes for a PR opportunity, sometime within the next week or two.

If it's not, expect silence or a slight platitude and wait for NPD.

I imagine we will get a PR statement this weekend, right after Black Friday.

I'm not saying the 3DS wasn't faster, even at its launch... but systems take time to get better optimized and thus faster... Nintendo really has to straighten that shit out, word of mouth will spread about this problem despite their being a high demand at the moment

Given the audience and main demographic for Nintendo something like menu speeds are not going to mean much, just like the general public is not going to give one shit about amount of ram or cpu speed

Shit. I don't have my original Wii, got rid of it long ago. Before doing so I wiped the system data clean in hopes that when I got the WiiU I would be able to re-download all of my VC games. I recall Nintendo saying they would announce a way for use to recover this stuff like Microsoft an Sony lets their users. I have a shit ton of purchased games. I tried going into the Wii EShop but it doesn't show any of my download history. Am I shit out of luck?

Yup.

Why is the Wii u so damn slow, I have never seen an interface load this long for everything

I'm used to everything opening up almost instantly in all my daily devices but this is Stone Age slow

I know I'll get a little off-topic here but, do you guys think there will be one last ND for this year? or will they wait 'til January? I'm dying to see and Iwata on post-launch mode.

Any impressions from those that have a HDD installed with the system? Been looking for some input on this and would appreciate any feedback.

Anyone know when we can expect a pr statement from nintendo or gamestop or w/e detailing how well/awful this thing sold at launch?

They usually release first weeks numbers, and include Black Friday numbers for all their systems. So probably next Tuesday or so.

Edit - Reggie made a slight comment that most of the stock was sold out, but retailers would have plenty for Black Friday on CNBC this morning. I feel like Nintendo shipped like a million consoles this week.

Well that's a bunch of horseshit! Why even bother buying new shit from the eShop if there's no security in your purchases? Your house blows away and your console goes away with it, a thief takes your stuff, your dog ate it, and so on. :(

Posting this again since it got buried in other stuff earlier in the thread...

Does anyone know if saves are compatible between physical and digital copies of the same Wii U game?

With the 3DS, I know they aren't (until Nintendo releases that tool), but that's because saves are on the cartridge. But Wii U stores saves on the system or hard drive. I'm wondering if they're compatible so that I can trade in my disks and go all digital.

I microwave steaks.
On an unrelated note, went to Gamestop and grabbed AC3, and Rabbids Party. I don't know anything about Rabbids Party other than that it has the Rabbids and that Destructoid described it as Wii U Mario Party. (And my wife LOVES Mario Party.) Anyone play it?
Good luck dude, the quick look on giantbomb's stream for Rabbids party looked dreadful, like a chore to play.

Man Amazon just notified me that the Hori Screen Protector won't be available until December 19th now. Gamestop just lists it as PreOrder. WTF? Man I don't know what to do now. Is the PDP that bad? Are people just going naked? I can only imagine the type of scuffs the stylus is going to do. Anyone know of any retailer carrying it? Fry's maybe?

Hori's online site says they're in stock, so I decided to order there. $5 shipping though, but it's better than waiting another month.

Don't know if it's been mentioned by they've put up a bit on their technical support page about the slow loading, to which they respond.

"We are aware that users are experiencing load times when they launch or switch between applications. We are exploring ways to enhance features for consumers’ overall experience."

Thanks. I ordered via Amazon and got the same delay email...so canceled and ordered 2 via the official site.

Listening to the Bombcast and all the UI and OS stuff sounds like a clusterfuck. To be honest, the shoddy ports and lack of real use for the GamePad (for now) doesn't bother me, but the OS stuff is really killing it for me. I'm actually really wanting to get a Wii U but that's what keeps turning me off.

Oh my god, they don't even know how to fix. :lol

Yeah, some of the tech issues has been very annoying. This has been the first system I owned that hard locked so bad that you have to disconnect the power cord to turn it off. The updates, even for games take forever and I have an amazing internet connection. I know that there is a lot of talk about a weak cpu and slow memory, but I really can't wait until a company really takes advantage of the large amount of ram it has available for games and what they can do with that.

For me, I am really enjoying the console, I thought I would have buyers remorse, but I don't (so far). The slow OS and other issues are worrisome and I hope they iron that out really quick because this is not a good sign when starting out with a new console.

Lttp on posting my launch experience. For the two people following my issue, I was able to bypass North Dakota's stupid Blue Laws (where businesses here can't open until noon on Sunday) by getting my deluxe system at a Super Walmart in a town right next door in Minnesota. Me and a friend got there at 7:30pm. There were only five deluxe sets and four basic. I was second on their list to get deluxe and had no problem getting mine, my friend isn't getting his yet so was nice enough to come and help take turns with me sitting in line. They sold every single set they had. Got home and we set up the system and played NSMBU before downloading the massive update. My friend was a lifesaver in getting my Wii U to connect to my modem (like many others it just wouldn't see my wireless connection), he used his networking know how and eventually had to reset my combo router-modem back to factory settings and then had to plug in each setting manually before it finally connected.

The next day I cancelled my Gamestop preorder and used it for in store credit. Fortunately, the GS reps were very nice and pumped me for info since they were getting asked a lot of questions. They had about three of each set left when I came in on Sunday, as of Monday night they only had one deluxe left and zero basic sets left so I'm sure they're sold out by now.

Checked Best Buy today and a rep told me "They sold like hot cakes," they're all sold out. Also, they finally have a Wii U demo station. Like many (all?) others, the only playable game is Rayman Legends, I really enjoyed it and think I'll buy it whenever it's released.

It's just a stock response, I wouldn't read anything into it beyond the fact that they're aware it's a problem. Even when they improve that stuff I imagine it'll just be slipped into the release notes under a general, 'Improved OS efficiency' or whatnot. Like they have for 3DS updates, like when they improved the initial load time for the 3DS eShop.

The UI and OS are fantastic, but the speed is just not up to snuff. If that's what's holding you back though, I say go for it. It's an inconvenience, and expect to spend 3hrs or so patching everything and setting stuff up, but overall it doesn't ruin the experience. It's also something they'll likely optimize. At least nintendo has stated publicly that they recognize there's a problem.

I know, it was more of a joke related to that anti-N virus GAF's air is full of right now. :p

Hm, okay. I called NoA and made a new support ticket. I told the guy that it appears to be an issue with 3DS transfer, and that other people have this problem. Of course they couldn't do anything about it right now.

Thanks! :D

Hey, just to let you know I have this issue too, I was going to do a transfer from the miis on my 3ds but backed out before connecting to it, and I still got the missing icon on miiverse after creating the miis directly on the wiiu...

hopefully nintendo is aware and will patch this bug on the next update

So has anybody checked their router to see what http server Nintendo is accessing for Miiverse in order to maybe see if there's an alternate and homespun means of checking those messages before Nintendo themselves make an interface for other platforms?

I wish the Pro controller's USB cable worked on the GamePad. How dumb is it to have to plug into a wall to recharge?

As we learned with the Lightning adapter debacle, there's no way to supply more than 5V safely using a micro USB adapter. I wouldn't be surprised if the tablet needs more juice than that to charge quickly.

Question:

If I plug headphones into the Gamepad, would headphones also play the sounds that come out of the TV? For example, I want to play Zombi U at night, but can't turn the TV volume on. If I mute the TV and plug headphones into the Gamepad, will I still hear everything? Or just Gamepad specific sound effects?

Yes. Also if you turn off the sound on the pad the pad exclusive sounds are routed through your TV (without headphones obviously).

Will the WiiU update flash eventually to watch videos in the browser?

No, the browser will never have flash because unlike many content providers who should have already figured this out, Nintendo thankfully realized Flash is just expensive, high maintenance crap and that Adobe is a terribly stupid company and a waste of time to deal with so they went with HTML5. YouTube already works great in the browser itself anyways, but if you want to visit flash sites that stubbornly stick to flash specific video content then you're out of luck.

Edit: Sorry if that sounded cranky but you should seriously be happy Nintendo gave Adobe/Flash the shaft and went with HTML5. Join us in a future of flexibility and convenience and fully streaming MST3K episodes any time you want 'em:

Just finished setting up my deluxe and playing some NintendoLand...

-Downloaded the system patch in the background while playing some NL, afterwards I thought the install was fairly snappy.
-OS seems a little sluggish but not as bad as people seem to make it out to be.
-Netflix seems like a really neat implementation
-NintendoLand looks great and is pretty fun, although I only played about an hour of 2 player

I'm really excited to dig in a little more, going to pick up a few games tomorrow.

Question though, is the home button on the gamepad supposed to light up?

EDIT: Also, I normally like the Verge, but their hardware review was just terrible. This system is far smaller, sleeker, and lighter than I expected and MUCH smaller than either of the other HD consoles, yet they mention how "hefty" and large it is. Also the line about the power brick being almost the size of the system reads as a fact but is absurd hyperbole, especially when it's smaller than other bricks that have been shipped with consoles. Yeesh, whole thing just rubbed me the wrong way
