Telltale's The Walking Dead - Story Discussion (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

I didn't cut my arm off specifically because in an interview Whitta made it seem like it would be pointless.

Kenny shot Ben before the zombies came.

I also don't think Kenny survived. He had one bullet and weren't zombies coming from both sides of the alley? He was screwed.

Not to mention Ben can be dead before this episode starts, and there are a couple other ways Kenny can wind up presumably dead if this is the case.

Just finished, great stuff.

That last backdrop of the sunrise(?) over the hills was breathtaking.

When Lee was giving Clem the final bits of advice I was suddenly envisioning season 2 being several years later, whether 1 or 10 I don't know (does the Walking Dead universe ever look at 5-10 years after the outbreak?) and she's grown up and kicking ass on her own, with plenty of throwbacks to the decisions you made and lessons you taught her in season 1.

Either way I can't wait.

Game of the year, no doubt for me. Never been so invested with game characters before on this journey with Lee and Clem. Such a powerful feeling. RIP Lee :(

Did anyone else audibly shout "No" when Christa took a swig from Kenny's drink?

I did. I was very disappointed that she did. understandable given the stress of the situation but I was disappointed. maybe because it added to the realism of the situation.

overall, an amazing finale to season 1. very sad to see lee go but I am glad that chirsta and omid got away and were possibly the ones walking over the hills at the end, at leat I hope it was them. clem, I had a tear rolling down my cheek during the final part with her and lee.

ben and kenny, I wasn't sad to see them go. I didn't particularly like kenny for the last couple of episodes and found ben to be unnecessarily whiny.

lee was the biggest hit for me. I really thought that he might survive after cutting off his arm, after all, hershel seems to be doing well in the show. was there any reason in particular they changed this from the show? did lee wait too log to cut off the limb?

Thoughts / notes:

Didn't cut off my arm. Didn't want the additional burden.
I was actually saving ammo during the video game shooting gallery in the house. Had one bullet at the end. No idea if that was being tracked or not, be interesting to see if that affects anything if you run out of ammo. Probably doesn't because you pick up another gun in the next room.
I wonder how the upstairs thing goes if you didn't kill the kid?
Didn't drink the whiskey. Kinda disappointed Ben never got offered any. I was always rooting for Ben.
... so much for rooting for Ben.
I'm not sold on Kenny dying. Although certainly wouldn't be the first offscreen death of a character in these games. Seems a little cheap.
The video game zombie murdering was cool although was a tiny bit awkward on PC for changing weapons. Not that you needed to, it was just cool to switch between stuff. I think. I have no idea if it was actually working. The decapitation kill was sweet.
The tension with crazy dude was palpable. Perhaps my favourite scene in the entire season.
I stopped stangling the guy once the QTE disappeared. Turns out he wasn't dead. I was kind of using meta knowledge of the hammer scene from the very first episode where you could kill that zombie in only a few hits, but most players mashed away.
I was almost expecting lee and clem to get shot down because they were dressed up as zombies. That'd be a ballsy fucking end.
No desire to speculate on the epilogue stuff.

Sorry for my formatting.

Possibly. It had to have been way longer than the cuts were on the show and in the comics.

Also it being done by people without any medical training. In the comics there was one success and one failure, the main difference was one was done by someone who was trained to treat injuries. Lee's blood loss could have been too much for him to survive and he put his body through tons of stress as soon as he regained consciousness.

very good points. I was hoping against hope that he would survive, the part where he's walking up to the marsh house and taking down walkers left, right and centre was amazing. the music, the man with nothing to lose, it was just incredible and I really thought that he was on his way to becoming like merle with this swiss army arm but less psycho / racist.

This was just an excellent close. The goodbye between Clem and Lee in that dank room was just so good. My eyes teared up when Clem's did. Definitely in the running for my GOTY.

Well that was depressing. I guess Lee either dies or comes back a walker, even when he chopped his arm off. Also the ending was kinda abrupt. All I can say is watch the credits until the end.

I guess season 2 will be clementine as the main character? I hope its all new characters to be honest.

Just finished the game. Up till now it was a tie between X-Com and The Walking Dead for GOTY. Well not anymore, man the ending is so damn good. Not since the end of half-life 2 ep 2 did I feel so emotional. I wanted so bad a dialogue option to tell Clem I loved her but then they give you an even more depressing option "I'll miss you".

Well done Telltale.

I ended up telling her not to be afraid there. Fuck man :'(

game was incredible. one of the most memorable game experiences i've ever had. <3 telltale

I need resolution for both christa and omid. I sent them out to look for a boat, which in hindsight was a fools errand, but I remain hopeful they survived and were the couple walking over the hills in the final cut scene after the credits.

Only thing that really annoyed me was Kenny's "death" in my game. Ben was clearly fucked there was noway to save him so I don't get understand why Kenny stayed behind so he could basically die with Ben. I think on my next game I'll just let Ben die in Ep.4 because Kenny saving Christa makes a lot more sense than trying to save a broken legged, impaled, dying, useless Ben.

Don't know how likely it is about Clem being the player character in season two. If she is, they'd have to show far more graphic violence against children than they did in this season, just for all the game over scenarios. Even Duck's end this season was tame gore-wise.

Being a central character again seems like a given, though.

I REALLY like Kenny's death as a way of resolving his character.

Most of what happens to Kenny through the series serves to wear down his ideas of self-reliance, individualism and overcoming. The scene in the bedroom where he talks about Katjaa taking the easy way out seems to be a kind of death rattle to Kenny we knew before.

When he stays with Ben and gives the excuse that he can save Ben I think that's given with a knowing wink-and-nod kind of resignation. There's nothing he can do except stay with the guy who he directed so much misplaced anger towards and not abandon him in his final moments. The apocalypse finally overtook him and he made a certain kinda peace with it in his last moments.

Unless they bring him back or something I dunno.

I think they did it that way to show he was trying to redeem himself after being horrible to Ben.

That ending was amazing. I'm still trying to find words.

What happens with the crazy guy if we didn't steal his stuff from the van on episode 2?

Nothing really, which was a bit annoying. He puts the blame on your group for stealing from the car then gets angry at you for kicking Lily to the kerb and not high-fiving Duck.

Just finished episode 5. (Late to the party on this game, actually started episode 1 on friday and played one episode a day after that, so I actually played the series practically back to back just have to chime in and say the entire series is brilliant, can't wait for season 2!)

I let Ben die at the belltower thinking he was too much trouble, but I did have the other four. Thought it was noble of Kenny to run in and save Christa, regardless though it sounds like he has an honorable death by saving her or Ben. Also I was completely shocked by the reveal of who the stranger was, along with his wife's reanimated head in the bag.

Also was on the brink of tears during Lee's and Clementines last moments together, makes me upset that no matter what, I couldn't save him. (Clem feeling the same way)

Overall a fantastic end to the first season and I hope that season 1 has an impact on the next season. (basically wondering if Clem, Omid, Christa, Molly, and Vernon's group are all either referenced or show up)

"I'll miss you, Clem."

Yup. That put me over the edge.
Amazing experience all around. Having a 6 year old daughter, this game had a heavy emotional effect on me in many areas. The Lee & Clem duo will be very, very difficult to top (for me) in Season 2. Heartbreaking, profound stuff right there.

Well done, TellTale.

For sure. It was already depressing, but when I saw that option (and picked it), that's when the tears started welling up. Goddamn.

I wish there was an option to some how tell Clem to find Molly. Clem needs to be tough like her, I wanted Molly to take care of/train her.

Damn. In all the craziness of Ep.5 I totally forgot about Molly. :D

I would be ok with Molly being the lead in Season 2.

Just finished it. First game to make me cry. Also first game that i actually gave a shit about a kid character who knew..

For some reason the last achievement didn't activate although i finished the game watched the credits and the after scene. No matter though. Good stuff eagerly awaiting for the second season.
Episode was a bit small though.

I just lost a large post, so instead I'll just say Bravo Telltale Games!

You stuck the landing. The Walking Dead shall go down as an enduring classic of the generation right alongside a Bioshock or a Portal.

I have my issues, especially with how the bite was handled in episode 4, but they nailed the ending

I cried. Incredible stuff. It is absolutely unbelievable what Telltale pulled off with The Walking Dead, I never imagined they had it in them.

Did anyone find themselves becoming a mute after joining up with the group again? I just didn't have the effort to speak.
speaking off assholes, anyone remember that fucking doctor who attacked kenny and locked him up, what a motherfucker.
I left the entire group alone. It's kind of amusing how 2 armed, grown men, a woman and a teenager get overpowered by a bunch of cancer survivors and a doctor.

Woah what a great game. Lots of gray area choices. Makes me want to play the game again just to see how taking different courses of action would affect the game.

Have they shared any info about Season 2? Straight continue to this with Clementine as the main character, maybe?

-Ben growing some balls and standing up to Kenny was awesome. Then he pulled a Ben and got himself and Kenny killed...

Kenny's the one who got himself and Ben killed.

For me anyways, I just saw it as Kenny finally fed up with life because everything was completely turning up shit in his life.

I mean, his wife and kid are gone, he got beaten by a bunch of cancer survivor/patients and his boat stolen, and berated the shit out of Ben and ended up feeling like an asshole for it by the end. He's got no other plan, and I just saw it as him wanting to be done, especially after seeing the couple in the bed.

But when he saw the couple he was all "No, that's wrong. You don't just give up." Giving up and dying in the alley doesn't make any sense for him at that moment.

Also, "This is going to hurt" is my new favorite tooltip of all time.

Duck thinks you're incredibly awesome.

There is precedent for it in both the comic books and the TV series. If you cut the limb off fast enough and you don't die of blood loss, anyway. Could be that Lee actually dies from blood loss if you cut his arm off

(comic + tv spoilers)
Dale survived getting bitten once because they amputated his leg in time, and Hershel survived the same way on the show

Not that I honestly thought it would help though. I just did it because I thought it was cool that they gave you the option.

Those people got their limbs cut off immediately. Lee waited too long, so I didn't cut it off because I figured it wouldn't do anything. Also Lee didn't die of bloodloss unless he was still bleeding. :p

I wonder how the upstairs thing goes if you didn't kill the kid?

If you don't kill the starving boy zombie, Christa's like "Man up guys" and does it herself.

Sounds about as useful as regular Ben.

Keep your expectations in check. The game only provides the illusion of choice for the most part.

They've said nothing about Season 2 except that it's coming.

So much positive feedback for this game, I don't really get it. The story, voice acting, writing, and graphics are so hit or miss... and almost always awkward. Not to mention the lack of purpose in many of the choices you've made throughout the series. It's a solid effort, and one with a lot of promise, but I'm disappointed that the majority are overlooking its many flaws.

That said, for what it is, I was quite pleased with the final episode. It had the two best written and directed scenes in the series. The Lee and Clementine scene was well done and I like how they handled the scene with the kidnapper (until they made him over-the-top crazy). Having a conversation with him was the perfect choice to end the series.

The cliffhanger after the credits ending as a mystery was pointless and stupid. It should have just been Omid and Christa. I liked how she didn't run after them right away, however.

One of my main issues with the game is that I helped out and sided with Kenny for almost the entire game but whatever the one thing I failed to do for him he never forgave me. Shouldn't I know what that was? It annoyed the crap out of me and made me stop caring about him whatsoever.

Larry was handled so poorly. He was so over-the-top mean and dangerous that I don't see how his daughter or anyone else would have been okay with him being in the group.

Just finished, manly tears were shed. ; ;

Went in with the full crew.

Choices:
-Ditched the arm.
-Stayed calm with Kenny
-Gave up my weapons.
-Killed the stranger (choked to death, saved the bullet, until the stat screen thought I had left him unconscious)
-Had Clem put me down

Some really incredible moments.

-Loved the shot of the walkers as you ascended out of the basement
-Omid was really delivering with the comic relief this episode, lots of great lines
-The whole attic sequence was fantastic, from the fight to the calm before the storm recollections, Christa with the bottle, plenty of wonderful interactions without any dialogue at all
-Ben and Kenny's finale was incredible
-Stranger ultimately worked for me, a little deus ex but at the same time I feel it works in the context of the walking dead universe, really brings out the whole 'world is broken', especially the survivors
-Clem reunion with her parents =(
-Breaking the news you were bit to Clem ='(
-Telling Clem you can't go o =''''(
-Watching Clem melee down a walker =DDDDD
-Saying goodbye, there is no emote sufficient

@Whitta and Telltale, that last stinger after the credits is some cruel shit, perfectly executed

He says the exact opposite thing when he sees the couple in the bed.

And I'm about 90% sure you clearly see him git bit when he's "saving" Ben.

edit: also, why the hell is Lee such an asshole. "Hey Clem, ignore the bat you just smashed the window with, handcuff that zombie to a shelf. no, don't worry, it's just a zombie, you can juke it." I was mentally screaming "USE THE BAT. USE THE BAT" in my head.

Then he gets knocked on the head and decides to toss it over :/
