Windows 8 / RT |OT|

Not sure how much this has been discussed, but I have to say the Flip Ahead feature for IE (Metro) is pretty awesome.

When I open a thread, I can easily flip through the entire thread since it will take me to the next page. When I'm looking at the list of thread, I can just keep flipping forwards to go through the pages of threads. Really cool that it works as I expect it would.

Welp, got my new computer and went with windows 8. So far I really like it! :D

Not finding it hard to use at all and it's so nice to look at.

:D

You can pin GAF to the start screen and change the tile with something nicer. Check the Windows 8 Tiles thread over here.

Side-docked mobile app. I think someone was working on one.

That would be me.

It's pretty much done, I'll be submitting it to MS soon

Theoretically, if you just searched on the Windows 7 Start menu for programs, there's no slowness compared to Windows 8.

In both you'd press the Windows key and type "Phot" for Photoshop, for it to appear, and press Enter. Windows 8 just shows the results in a bigger pane, but it's not a detriment.

If you did want to navigate through your programs, then yeah, it's not a good. However, I haven't had much issue, since I pin the programs I want and use the search when I need something else.

I wish icons on the task bar could be smaller though. That way I could fit in more.

Use 7+ Task Tweaker, you can remove the extra spacing between icons.

My screen has been fading while using Windows 8 and I'm not sure why. It mostly happens when I open something dark. I first noticed it when I opened a youtube video in full screen. The whole screen was black and it made my brightness fade for some reason. It also happens when I go to the Windows 8 start screen. When I go back to my desktop, the brightness goes back to normal. Help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

so, you mean you have black outs and temp. loss of video in modern UI?

It happened to me when I installed some apps, Rowi was one. Some apps can crash the whole thing. see if you installed something recently.

if it happen in just anything dark like you say and randomly must be your gpu driver, AMD?

Why the hell is Minesweeper more than 100 megs large dlmn8r? I refuse to put it on my ssd.

Netflix app on Windows 8 is pretty damn awesome. Makes going back to the PS3 app kinda painful.

Not sure exactly why it's so huge, but it's also not just a simple minesweeper game. Quite a few high-ish resolution art assets for the adventure mode, and there's a lot of stuff in there for the daily challenges too.

Is there any chance Windows Blue will bring multitasking/sideloading apps to 16:10 monitors? Really hate that I can't fully use my beautiful Asus monitor with this functionality.

Yeah, dunno what they called it so I went with sideloading. Give me a break, brot.
No, I won't give you a break, MCD. You've been bashing Windows Phone a lot lately. You know that is my job. Do you want to put me out of business? Give yourself a break.

The 1/3 snapping works on 16:10 monitors just like it does on 16:9. If you want a 50:50 split, then I don't think that's going to happen, because it would put even more work on the designers.

You left your job just when it started!

Hmm...weird, I have this 16:10 monitor in portrait mode and no snapping works on it. I guess portrait mode is no good?

I never left!

Yes, it's the portrait mode. For snapping to work, you need at least a resolution of 1366 x 768, so unless you have a monitor that is 1366 pixels in height, it won't work. You'd need something like a monitor with a 2560 x 1600/1440 resolution to make it work in portrait.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
Windows 8 really seems to hate old ass games. Two games I picked up this month run like absolute crap on the OS but they seem to work just fine on Windows 7.

Compatibility settings don't seem to make any difference in the game's performance either.

Does the snap really look like thirds to you?

I'll be honest, I've never bought a genuine windows in my life but since i've been expanding my steam collection and building a nice little legal game collection, my cracked windows 7 is a thorn in the eye. Now, I saw that I could buy W8 for 15 euros which is total steal and had me almost over the edge but it seems there's a lot of controversy about the OS.
What are your thoughts? I loved XP, loved W7, have an iPhone and once ventured into Linux for a little while. That's experience I have so far. Would W8 be a good fit?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah it's good, especially if you're not attached to the old start menu.

I think there is still time left for the Windows 8 Beta, no? Why not try that first?

Edit: Dunno how far you want to customize it but desktop can be customized just as much as 7 at least. For new UI stuff, you got Stardock software among many others.

Yea, I saw that thread when I was doing some research and it looks really nice.
Can you also see the programs that are running somewhere or do you have to switch to the desktop for that? Like for instance, when Spotify or Word is open, can you see that in de new menu? Or is it really just something that you press to open certain stuff while still mainly work in the desktop area?

The way the start screen functions is practically the same as the start menu. It's still a program launcher but laid out differently.

Yeah for that price I'd go for it without hesitation. Give it some time and you might get used to and even really enjoy the new Start Screen but if not you can throw down an extra few bucks to get one of the 3rd party programs that brings the Start Button back. I'd give the new Screen a little while though to get used to. I like it a lot personally.

Going legal is worth the price in and of itself.

The left sidebar will show opened Metro Apps, you can access this in the Start Screen or on the desktop. If you click in the top left corner it will switch opened apps for you. If you're in the Desktop its the same as its always been.

Also Windows+Tab for Metro switching and Alt+Tab for Desktop Switching.

Yea, start8 looks like a safe backup ;-)

One more thing, I'm not bound to bing or other incorporated shit that MS send along with it right?

Do what's the easiest way to set up a PS3 controller with windows 8?

Haven't tried it with a PS3 controller, though this should work. Use XPadder (http://xpadder.com/)

This is the way I set up my 360 controller (should transfer over to PS3 too)

Start = Start (it is really nice to use start as a toggle to go from the desktop to the start menu... great if you just want to glance at your live tiles)
L Thumbstick = Arrow keys
R Thumbstick = Mouse move
D-Pad = Arrow keys
Shoulders = Page up / down (useful for quickly scrolling through the start menu)
Triggers = Semantic zoom (Ctrl + / -)
A = Enter
B = Esc
X = Menu (the button almost nobody seems to use to the left of your right control key)
Y = Left Click
Back = Right click

Not sure what to put on the thumbstick triggers, if anything. So far this has worked for me though. Start menu works great with a controller.

I'm hoping they introduce 50/50 support for "high res" monitors.

It shouldn't require much work from designers if done right.

Here is my analysis:

* The minimum requirements for snapped view is 1366 x 768 (320px snapped, 1046px for the app on the other side)
* The minimum requirements to run Win8 Store Apps is 1024 x 768

Based on the above info, the min width that designers need to currently target is 1024.

My current monitor is 1920 x 1200

To support 50/50, the supported width would have to be 960px, only a loss of 64px

In addition, if everyone supported 960px, it could potentially allow snapped view for 1280x1024 and 1280x800 resolutions (960 + 320 = 1280)

So my proposal is that 50/50 snapped views should be supported for monitors with a minimum of 1920width.

Here are the most popular resolutions based on the latest NetApplications market share http://www.netmarketshare.com/report.aspx?qprid=17

With my proposal, it would mean the following

1360 x 768 15% <-- support snapped view
1024 x 768 13%
1280 x 1024 13% <-- support snapped view NEW
1280 x 800 10% <-- support snapped view NEW
1440 x 900 6% <-- support snapped view
1920 x 1080 5% <-- support snapped view and 50/50 view NEW
Other 37%

Is there a way to disable the window switching with the trackpad?

Charm Bar -> Settings -> Change PC Settings -> General -> App Switching.

that disable touchscreen swipe too, if you want to only disable it in trackpad, you should look into your trackpad setting. If it's Synaptics with latest driver, you can go into touchpad properties and disable Edge Swipes.

Thanks, much better.

OblyTile allows me to customize my Metro icons right?

I hope Microsoft incorporates some of the abilities of Windows phone with metro apps. We really need fast resume.

That is already there. They need to work on fast initial load.

On another note, Steam's hardware survey page is not working for me. Was going to see what kind of numbers Windows 8 was looking at for December. Anyone able to see it?

I figured out today that it was just a setting with my monitor. Thanks anyway though.

I believe there's a legit trial version available on Microsoft TechNet, I don't think you need a subscription to download the trial version.

I believe that's a 60 day enterprise evaluation version (which can't be upgraded to a full version).
The release preview should be good till February. However it can't access the store and run the current apps.

I'd just get 8 right away. I think it's great and even if you don't like it there are still tools like start 8.

Can you make a category on your start menu that is called neogaf? With different tiles for different threads you are currently following?

I need help installing Windows 8.

I currently have Windows 8 running on my HDD, but I want to do a fresh install on my SSD that I just installed to where my DVD drive used to be.

I have the Win8 iso file, and I was thinking of mounting it on a virtual drive (this is all done in HDD Win8) and install to my SSD. However, it looks like the installation setup only recognizes the whole thing as a upgrade to my HDD, and I am not sure whether it will give me an option to do a fresh install to my SSD?

I heard that I should copy the iso file to an USB drive and boot up the computer with it. Is this the only way?

Thanks!
