What's the best way to do the first episode of the second season?

By rehashing everything of the first season for those who can't remember what happened. That was as fun as you expect it would be.

aka, it sucked. No?

Mirai only appears at the very end of the first episode, but she's well known by now. She's one of the main girls on the bad ninja side.

I haven't seen the episode yet, but if that's how Japanese workplaces are still operating, then doesn't that become a realistic depiction as opposed to a perpetuation of old-school gender dynamics?

From what I hear they're slightly worse.

I just lost my shit for like five minutes solid at this part. I'd forgotten just how good this show is at making me absolutely lose it. :lol

The office dynamic does seem slightly strange in the show in other ways, though. Not only are there two "editors" in their early 20s at a seemingly high profile magazine (when the likelihood is, surely, that they'd be sub-editors doing grunt work, not writing whole articles), but the young employees talk to their bosses in a way I find very surprising, regardless of this being a Japanese show.

Hiroko is 28 years old.

Wait, a loli? So much for being a bastion of full bosoms. Faith lost. No more hometown.

She's the only one in the entire cast. Interestingly, fans were asked about which character they wanted as the cover for Senran Kagura Burst's pre-order bonus (I think it was an art booklet), and she won.

I couldn't get past this, personally. I appreciate the unusual premise of casting an older female as protag, but it's like two steps forward & one step back in terms of portraying gender dynamics in the workplace - which, given its prominence and combination with an obnoxious faux-shounen presentation, I was unfortunately unable to ignore.

Well those are certainly perfectly reasonable criticisms, but I'm not sure what a "faux-shounen presentation" is.

That was a lie and you all know it. Fall had already ended and you kept that thread alive for no other reason than to stroke your egos. If we are gonna do this we need to do it right.

Wow. Regulus dropping truth bombs. Was it something we said?

So, it seems that Anime News Network will be undergoing a redesign soon. Fresh from Christophe Macdonald, here's a look at their current mockup.

So they went in the most obvious of all directions. So it's going to take longer to navigate because there will be big pictures everywhere but it will work better for tablets.

Hmm, this was a really strong proper final episode to the series and I'm kinda amazed they'd leave it as a BD bonus ep. It seems to hint at future developments in the manga, especially one very gruesome one so I should totally check that out some time. Not as fantastic as the first three but it's definitely up there with the Mero and the 00 manga bundle episode (aka the only other good ones).

I'm no expert on web design, nor do I visit ANN that much, but I don't really like it. I'd like it more if the front page were more focused. I don't think they need to show all of the news of the day on the front page. Just highlight some really important news (they already kinda do that though) and stick the rest in a "News" section of the site.

Edit: In fact, since the news seems to be categorized, they could probably just list the highlights from each section if they wanted.

bridge battle was cool, panzer iv is a beast, rest of it was bad and with overly long needless fan service. next battle looks interesting too, I expect them to lose miserably :p

Wow, Sorata really is such a piece of shit. 12 episodes and he hasn't learned a single thing. This is like anti-AnoNatsu in terms of how you pace this shit out. Either that, or we're in "the books are moderately successful so let's milk this for 30 0000 books like every other crappy adaptation" mode.

Well... I guess him being the same VA as Kirito doesn't help, right?

Man, that wasn't even fat-fat, just Japan-fat. ripoff total

I felt that, as I watched this episode at one in the morning while eating a toblerone that I got for Christmas, that maybe, just maybe there was some kind of message for me here, but I quickly dismissed the possibility and continued to cram my face full of chocolate.

I will get around to re-watching Hataraki Man at some point but as I've already seen it twice I can remember the first episode fairly well. For those hoping for more of the people in the office to have their characters explored you will get your wish.

Anyway, I'm glad people are finally watching this series as it's some I've been recommending for a few years now and not just because it has a unique setting.

For some reason, when I only knew Hataraki Man as the name of an anime set in an office and Lupin was barely significant in my mind, I associated your current avatar with the show.

I'd watch something about Jigen working in an office.

For better or for worse, I shrug it off in a "lol japan u so crazy and backward" way, but yours is a completely understandable way of looking at it - and probably a "better" one. (Probably not the right word for what I mean...)

I find it odd that they're being referred to as editors when they seem to basically be reporters writing articles. But I don't think that Weekly Jidai is a particularly high-profile magazine. I get the impression it's just one of many in the pretty crowded field of Japanese publishing.

Is it me or there was another Sambomaster song in the scene where she is smoking on the roof? Whatever's the case I now feel like playing some Ouendan 2 aka the best video game of all time.

I fucking love Ouendan 2, so I can pick out that song anywhere. "Ou-En-Dan! Ou-En-Dan!"

I can't track down the song that played on the roof, though. Either way, it's rather unusual how they casually use licensed music in this episode.

Well, it helps discussion to have actually seen it, or if not, to have read the other part of my post. Anyway, the shounen/shoujo approach of the show means we get a cartoony, over the top depiction of this lady needing to go into manly testosterone overdrive or w/e in order to get any work done (I can't remember if they literally show it like that, but it's basically that dumb) which is problematic as hell in itself and pointing more towards, yes, a perpetuation than an impartial depiction. In any case, none of this is remotely realistic.

So it's less like a realistic depiction of gender dynamics in the Japanese workplace - it's too soft and toothless to do that anyway, given that the reality would seem to be harsher than what we get here - and really more of a hammer-subtle, simplistic, and thoughtlessly wrongheaded attempt at female empowerment.

Don't take it from me though, as most people seem to like it!

Considering I pointed out that description in my initial writeup, I can't say it didn't bother me as well. I'm not capable of taking "Hataraki Man Mode" too literally (what would a rookie editor know about Matsukata's hormone levels?), but even our protagonist thinking "Man Switch: Engage!" before she gets down to serious business suggests that those problematic assumptions are engrained at a pretty deep level all around. Her coworkers can make whatever jokes they like, but is that really how she sees herself?

On some level, a lot of the attitudes people have towards Matsukata are just the culture being what it is, but this show hasn't at this point shown much interest in challenging any of that. I'm not sure how it'll progress, but even in its stripped-down form, I'm finding it interesting enough that I'm willing to stomach the gender issues.
