Japan ranks their favorite female characters from Final Fantasy

I don't know why Lightning is so popular, I can appreciate when a heroine is tough, not a damsel etc... but she's just an archetype. Lightning as a character has no depth.

Spoilers

In FFXII,
we see Ashe start off just as an item with Rasler, then she becomes a resistance leader, has to confront the alleged betrayal of Basch, later with Vossler and then a tool of the Occuria and inevitably the Queen of Dalmasca.
Lightning's arc is one dimensional by comparison. In XIII
She softens up a bit, with the way she treats Snow and Hope but that's about the range of her character development. By the end of the game, it depended on Fang and Vanille to save the day.

Lightning being on this list at all, let alone #1, is as much of a joke as Noctis being on the Male list, right?

Is this some kind of Japanese inside joke I'm not in on?

Rem. Celestia. Eiko. Garnet. To name a few.

On it.

You do know that characterization means that you could describe the person's personality, not just what happens to them, right? Yuffie is probably the only one I can think of that actually has much of a discernible personality and even then it is a very cliche one.

So assumes one who does not think I know these characters actions and mannerisms.

I don't understand at all how so many people are in love with empty vapid cool looking Cloud, and yet so despise his female clone Lightning. It really is nostalgia, I think.

how many facebook accounts does Toryiama own?

This sort of perception change usually happens after people have had time with the game off of their radar and can re-evaluate it with a fresh perspective later on, but FF13 just keeps showing up again and again, there's no chance to forget.
Not only that, I don't think there's enough going on in terms of content for FF13 to be looked back at fondly. People grasped what FF13 was trying to do initially and rejected it.

At least with FF12 the initial hate could be written off as people who, at the time, were resistant to its radical ideas. Even if a person disliked its story, there was still a chance that person could come back later on and acclimate themselves to its combat system, gambits, or appreciate the design of its overworld. It was packed with so much content that there was a possibility that even the most ardent hater could find something to like.

FF13 doesn't really have that. All it really has to offer you is its story and combat. Once you make up your mind about those, there's really nothing else to evaluate. I don't see where people could go to gain some kind of newfound appreciation.

Top 3 were ideal Toriyama characters.

Remember Toriyama did Aerith's character development. And Yuna was wonderful in the sequel.

And then we got the great queen.

Here. Look what the fangirls did to him.

Cloud died with FF7, any rendition since then is not really Cloud..dissidia, crisis core, KH, advent children, all of them sucks!

This will be seen to SE as a proff of Toriyama talent to create remarkable protagonists, so they'll ask him to write FF XV!!

*jumps from window*

Well, I can't say thats not true, but while the XIII games were being produced we had a lot of side games that appealed to all the fans, I mean Dissidia and Theathrythm are pure fan service and are good games. And there is still Type-0 that has a very different focus and style overall. Of course its not the same as a main new sequel. But people cant say there aren't options...
Yeah, there's options but they're really not substitutes. I mean, I'm with you - I'd like to see the extreme anti-XIII sentiments die down too, but I just don't think it will happen until SQEX moves on to XV. XIV and Versus might help a bit, but the mainline series probably just needs to advance before people can move on from their disappointment over this generation.

Well Type 0 is a separate title in the franchise. It has the power of a mainline title but is diminished due to being a handheld product.

Type 0, XIII series and Versus all share the FNC mythos making it so.
Also significantly dimished by the fact that most Western fans haven't been able to play it. So it's done nothing to satiate their FF thirst, only inflame it even more :-(

The only people who self-identify as Final Fantasy fans anymore are crazies who would like XIII, since Square has alienated everyone else at this point, so it's no surprise Lightning won this poll.

Sad really. It pains me to say FF is a rotting corpse. That's putting it nicely.

Rinoa in the top 10 is just as bad. I swear she was the most grating heroine in any FF game I've played outside of Rosa. And she turned Squall into a sap. She's a teenage girl, just everything flawed about her turned all the way up.

That's not the fault of fangirls, that's all on SQEX :-(

Cool, yeah, let's call people with different opinions about things "crazies," that makes for healthy discussion.

She is a teenage girl lol

Yuna is so much better than Lightning you'd think they were from two completely different series. Well, I guess they are considering Yuna is a "Final Fantasy" character and Lightning is a "Toriyama's Wet Dream" character.

To be fair, the large part of his characters in FF7 wasn't his own...

Then his real character at the end of FF7 was transformed on a stupid braindead emo in Advent Children, which become the official personality for the character.

Cloud dissidia is a disgrace and hurts to see him like a second rate Squall.

Cloud isn't a great character, he's not particularly charismatic but he develops a lot more over the course of the game, he's a different person by the end especially considering the Zack identity arc. Lightning's character development isn't as good.

Their personalities are really not that similar in their respective games. And outside of that, the only thing they share in common is the physical resemblance between the AC version of Cloud and CG Lightning. Lightning's character is much closer to Squall's than Cloud's.

/shrug. I don't understand why y'all are still calling Lightning a clone of Cloud. She's really, really not. People get so hung up over random quotes from developers and keep reiterating them, years after they've ceased to be relevant. Nomura said he was directed to design her to be like a female Cloud, but personality wise they're totally different. It's like the HD towns thing: someone at SQEX once said it was hard or something, and years later people still won't let it go, despite the existence of HD towns in SQEX games.

I'd rather be crazy then. And since I am GILGAMESH FAN KING I pretty much am.
LOL but that's not what your tag says...;-)

Actually, the top 3 are largely Toriyama characters. He spent most of his time on FFVII making Aerith the way she was, and finalizing her death scene.

If you think about it, Yuna, and much of FFX, is somewhat close to FFXIII. She has a "focus" and when it's completed it'll kill her, but she carries on. Also strong religious themes like XIII.

This, FF7 Cloud is not really like Lightning..., the modern interpretation of Cloud is like Lightning...
