Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

It was just devs being themselves on camera. True beauty :')

No kidding. There was this feeling of "just a bunch of people who love what they do" vibe going with these.

And now I'm stuck surfing all of their old documentaries. I always enjoyed the Behind the Scenes of Halo 2. Plus I miss Staten. :'(

Man, I really loved Halo 3. Bungie seemed to work their asses off to exceed peoples' expectations and make a unique, balanced game.

They SEEMED to, but it's not as good as Halo 2.

I still don't get this. I LOVED Halo 2. Campaign, and Multiplayer equally. But I thought Halo 3 really brought the trilogy story-wise to a great conclusion, and the multiplayer was incredible. So much fun, and got better with the addition of theater and forge. Customs got even better with those.

He'll have something to show in a few weeks :)
And I can't wait. =D

Yea. I think Dax has really summed up how amazing Halo 3 was so many times that I won't bother. I really think that all 3 of the original trilogies games fit together so perfectly.

If you didn't catch on to the issues present here when:

1. Frankie posted an open letter tailored for this community
2. Other developers and 343i staff post far less
3. GAF mods warn, ban and try to cleanse this community
4. Louis Wu left
5. This OT literally recently imploded on itself

...then things here are not going to change, neither are dominant poster attitudes and the distinct lack of empathy for your fellow Halo fans.

I came here for multiple reasons being the Halo content you guys created from events, to debate with professional players and I had previous GAF accounts for other Aussie and game interests. I also wanted to talk with Halo developers on a personal level. None of that is enjoyable here.

Looking at my experiences here I too no longer care for this community, there is barely anything unique or fulfilling or in depth anymore plus anything different gets group shit on. Thanks to all the friendly and intelligent folks with the quality content. As for posters I consider not in that positive label I say things are what you make of them. Perhaps you will grow up and not piss away other opportunities in future.

To 343 the campaign was great, love that Halo finally knocked the graphics, facial animations, mocap and cutscenes out of the park. With some work I could go from really liking the multiplayer and SPOPS to loving them. FUD and centralising the lore was solid work too, kudos. I hope to see you more on your home ground, Waypoint.

Cheers, I am out.

Much like Faye Reagan, Ozzy's always gotta wait for the money shot to drown him out before he lets them turn the cameras off.

I think we all just miss Marty..

Ehhhh, his conservatism and stagnation sorta left a sour taste in my mouth. Halo CE was good, Halo 2 was 75% variations on original melodies with the rest being drum loops and arpeggiators, Halo 3 was Halo Reorchestrated with a heaping helping of vocoder bass and StormDrum included, Halo 3 ODST was a step in the right direction save for the uninspired percussion (look up "God of War Save the Oracle Challenge" and tell me it didn't have a fucking identical drum riff as the track you get in Buck's first level despite coming out earlier), and Reach was refreshing but ultimately failed because Marty thinks melodically (opposed to harmonically), but ultimately didn't give us any particularly memorable melodies with it.

I think handing the score off to a guy who thinks harmonically with access to a full orchestra instead of a bunch of software instruments was a wonderful step in the right direction. Let Jinnouchi work on whatever scenarios need memorable melodies and Davidge handle the ambient work. Hell, pull a Metroid Prime and have ambient tracks be underscores to actual "organic" melodies by Jinnouchi and you'd be fucking set. Just implement it better instead of playing at 56kbps and only syncing it to the Terminals properly.

There's some asshole in my game who is camo sniping. Well two, actually (One on my team and one on the other).

Needless to say I betrayed the guy on my team twice for doing so. Call me butthurt, but whatever. It's soo frustrating. The only reason the guy on the other team started was because of my team mate. It's the single worst combination in this game... I thought 343i would've learnt better because of Reach, but apparently not.

The fact that you don't even need to move to (maybe) get more sniper ammo is even more frustrating.

Man, Spartan Ops can be infuriating. I'm done with it for the night. Took me two hours to get through all five missions of Episode 4 and just failed out of the first mission of Episode 5. Ugh. As far as I can tell, they're mission design continues to be a) drop an assload of FRG-wielding enemies on the map and b) repeat. Oh, and 50% time a trip to a button that needs pressing will be interrupted by spawning Promeatheans. It just gets so tedious fighting them. Especially when 3 or more Watchers are patrolling the skies.

I wonder if I should really just drop the difficulty down to Heroic. Bah!

What are the 75% of Halo 2's songs that are variations on the original themes in Halo 1? And though a lot of Halo 3's soundtrack was remixes of older stuff, there's a lot of great new stuff in there too.

And ODST was so amazing. Miles ahead of almost anything in the videogame music world. SKYLINE

I've been thinking hard on this line of thought for awhile after 4. But, yeah, nostalgia has something to do with it, but even with the technical achievements of Reach (perfect theater and better forging options, etc). I would have to agree.

I want this now. That sounds (no pun intended) really cool, and I'm interested to see how that would hypothetically play out.

Your opinion is wrong

Marty is predictable but he does what he does better than anyone else. Davidge was ass through and through.

I'll look up specifics later, but having re-listened to it, surprisingly a lot of the melodies lend themselves to the original game. A few obvious ones like Mjolnir Mix and Thermopylae Soon are based on the main theme. A large majority of the choral tracks are from the Title Theme, there are a few other oddballs though. For example, Heretic, Hero is just A Walk In The Woods with more apparent percussion and shows up three or four times in the game.

Hilariously, some of the only real recognizable tracks that rely exclusively on original stuff are from Incubus and Hoobastank.

The flood tracks such as Ancient Machine could have been saving graces but they were underscored by that bouncing string riff from the original.

Hell, even one of the catchy ones, Pursuit of Truth, is based on a track from Marathon.

A large majority of original content from Halo 2 is just ambience, such as what you hear in Sacred Icon. I know it's hard to accept, but go back and listen to Halo CE's OST and then 2's in one go and it becomes surprising.

Even In Amber Clad borrows the bassline from Under Cover of Night or something if I'm remembering right.

oh

SHIT

I'm dumb.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I'M GOING TO TELL YOU WHAT I TELL EVERYONE ELSE: WATCH ALL OF THE TERMINALS IN ONE SITTING AND TELL ME THE MUSIC DOESN'T WORK PERFECTLY WITH IT.

You take that back. The man is as much musical genius as Marty if not more. I thought the Halo 4 soundtrack was fantastic in it's own, completely non-Marty way, and good for it, too, the mood of the story did not follow the original trilogy. I just wish it were mixed better into the game.

I thought he did some good stuff with Arrival, To Galaxy, and Awakening (even though I don't recall that one appearing in the game).

Remember kids: Halo 2 Vista tomorrow at 3 CST (if I'm not mistaken).
I'm down. Just need to reinstall it. Again.

Also, will we be doing any custom maps?

That's been affecting every Halo community. With MLG gone and 343 being so vague on details, there really isn't that much to have discussion about, so arguments go on repeat for weeks. It's no one's fault really and I find it odd that some are implying it's HaloGAF specifically, but it's everywhere. This has been going on since we noticed the lack of support in Reach and the only thing driving the Halo community was the hype of the Reach TU, Halo 4, and the limited time of post-TU MLG Reach.

Like you said, the map packs help and hopefully SpOps will bring some new life to the mode, but other than that, with the lack of sharing gametypes/maps easily like before and 343 hardly giving us details besides rotational playlists, everywhere has been very dull in discussion and I don't see that changing unless the TU makes a huge difference.

I guess the difference is that NeoGAF keeps churning out threads. HBO just stays more quiet if there's nothing to talk about. But yeah, I guess that's all the circle-meta talk we need. We've all said our pieces.

As for Davidge, I've appreciated his work more in isolation. I think the biggest issue was poor integration of the score into the actual game. I'm not a major fan of the audio mixing in this game.

And yeah, the "Composer" opening is the most over-the-top riff on Star Wars I've ever heard. Every later-period John Williams beat is there--the slight glissandos, the rising Brass riffs. It's straight out of Episode I.

I dunno, I think the Davidge-Jinnoucchi collaboration worked very well and gave Halo 4 it's own sound. They were right not to try and emulate Marty.

I think this is golden: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFTJozc1pMU

But I guess it's all a subjective matter.

Personally I would have loved to see what Rippy did when released from the boundaries of an RTS game. Stephen Rippy for Halo 5!

I swear the opening cutscene of Composer is straight out of Star Wars. Soundtrack, cinematography, everything. It was straight out of the prequels.

Honestly. It was okay, it just wasn't Halo.

That's what I mean.

The track itself isn't far from great. Sometimes I even sing it to myself when walking to and from school. But I would never associate it with Halo.

Yeah, that too. Egh

Yeap. I only have to get four achievements and then I've got the full 1000/1000 (of course I'm going to stick around to help the others though)

Now that you've linked it, I'd like to comment on the Forerunner ship itself. What the hell happened to the elegant and streamlined Forerunner creations that we've seen before? It looks like the thing from Mass Effect 2.

In fact I'm almost sure of it. I mean how many of you actually see yourself playing Halo 4 a year from now

I feel like this man gets no love. His work on Halo Wars was great.

So a small piece that may have been inspired by Star Wars (mind you, much in Halo 4 probably was, I've gone into it in depth in a previous post - it's still a space opera, it's bound to happen) that plays for like 20 seconds completely delegitimizes the entire soundtrack? Have you listened to it outside the game?

Ugh no. Neither of those two are even in the same league as Marty. Halo 4's soundtrack was a complete joke.

ODST still stands as one of the most unique sounding games in history.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I'M GOING TO TELL YOU WHAT I TELL EVERYONE ELSE: WATCH ALL OF THE TERMINALS IN ONE SITTING AND TELL ME THE MUSIC DOESN'T WORK PERFECTLY WITH IT.

It doesn't.

Seriously, the only standout music that I remember after beating the game was the menu music, the music used in the final level, and the credits music which was a remix of a theme that marty made.

They could have hired Jesper Kyd, Kevin Ripel, Rom Di Prisco, or a number of other composers who would have done a much better job than Davidige, who clearly doesn't have any real experience working with video games.

It's funny that this is the only track people like to post, other than To Galaxy. That's because those are the only two songs that don't suck, as I mentioned in my post.

Really, the rest of it could fit just fine in any Hollywood sci fi and I would not recognize it as Halo music
