Polygon: "What Nintendo has learned from Kickstarter"

I think that horrendous Kohler article is the real horrible thing here. With the new console announcements, I can't wait to see how horrible games journalism gets this year.

To me this is not really out of the quality of most of Kohler's abysmal output. But it's just a real bad opinion, hardly going to set game journalism any lower than it already is imo

I read the article -

I can understand why the journalists thinks the Nintendo directs are similar to a kickstarter campaign as they have the same goal of reaching to the consumer to drive awareness and hopefully convert them into buyers - rather like an infomercial

I'm kind of sad that Kohler stooped to the level of most of the industry in slamming GAF on twitter with his peers.

You guys trying to spin this article into a "journalists are mad at Nintendo for cutting them out of the loop" thing are doing just as much narrative fabrication as the article itself. This article isn't negative about it at all.

I don't think journalists are mad. But I think the premise that "Nintendo is learning from Kickstarter" is laughable at best, and is missing the reason why Nintendo has been doing Nintendo Directs in the first place: because the enthusiast press is largely worthless to them.

I commonly see the excuse that 'the article isn't bad', but that never excuses the clickbait headlines. At least this one isn't a goddamn 'clueless about' header

A television psychic could have proven his telepathic might by forecasting Nintendo's latest announcements. Coming soon to a Wii U near you are the latest iterations of franchises that anyone who has a mild interest in the industry saw coming a mile away.
Promises followed by promises followed by promises. To appease us a decade ago, those who preordered Wind Waker received a bonus disc containing both the original and Master Quest version of Ocarina of Time.
Nintendo has a knack for catering to its excitable fan base.
Excitement is a difficult property to bottle. Nintendo has briefly conjured interest in the Wii U after it had been collecting dust in the months since release, but it has done so by courting the very people who have already made up their minds about the system.

They are really hating this ND thing, theres even a "months of dust" comment despite the console being two months old.

Looks like GameSpot is adding into the Nintendo Direct hate.

Wow. That Iwata Wii U unboxing must really have got to them.

It's like only Nintendo is guilty of this crime about announcing they're working on a new Mario/Zelda/Kart game but the same industry as a whole will pound their chests and redesign their entire website design for games like a new Halo, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, etc.

I agree. As if SMT x Fire Emblem and Wind Waker HD and X weren't complete surprises!

Then again, I've never liked Tom McShea.

What a hilariously shit comparison.

Studio announces movie coming out in a year? Learning from kickstarter!

As for the ND stuff, I much prefer getting the news directly from them rather than it being filtered through endless copy&paste sites.

Maybe they feel threatened by Nintendo Direct? It sounds stupid I know but Iwata has said before that he wants to make gaming press reviews less relevant and that idea is what birthed the user rating system on the nintendo channel, miiverse and etc. Plus less traffic to their site if they don't get the scoop

It's kind of a great strategy. I mean, of course part of it is controlled PR/Nintendo propaganda, but they have the right idea with the awesome Iwata Asks series, and Direct broadcasts. No being assaulted with ads, either.

I'm glad people are finally taking Nintendo to task for the desperation move of announcing new games people want.

It's the only way they'll learn.

Regardless of the general positivity of the article, I feel like all of the actual negative reactions out there to this last Nintendo Direct truly prove that "Nintendo can't win."

Other than Wii U Party, Game & Wario, and Wii Fit U, pretty much every game mentioned/showed in the Nintendo Direct was a core/dedicated gamer title. You can argue that Yoshi's Land is a bridge game. This is not the Nintendo of E3 2008; the company has changed for the better and is striving to at least provide compelling game experiences to gaming traditionalists and Nintendo fans. They announce some neat surprise games but someone will always have something negative to say.

Considering the fact that ND is basically a "no bullshit" approach to announcing content, Nintendo definitely made a good move, but the spin of gaming journalism will prevail.

So many dumb comments on there, even one saying theyre going 3rd party for PS4/ 720 like Sega without even looking at the reality of the situation, and people are upvoting these comments.

Last time I click on any of these sites. This kind of stuff is why I now get my news mostly from GAF and Directs. Havent bothered with any of these media guys for months, maybe even a year now.

I have to agree... what's going on?

well it must get annoying having to cover the same old, same old, tired nintendo franchises like SMT x Fire Emblem, W101 or X when you could be spending your time covering exciting upcoming new games like Gears, GoW, Forza, GTA, CoD, Halo, Battlefield, Madden, FIFA etc.

Journalists see a lot of games, so it makes sense that they're more excited about new things than the same old faces popping up at every E3.

How exactly is presenting carefully-cut trailers that may or may not be of actual game footage in a format dictated by the company themselves not "spin" or "bullshit"?

If you're going to demand a critical eye you can't suddenly get pissed when people decide to do it on something you like.

So I guess people really hate Polygon? Or didn't read the article? I didn't think it came off as negative at all. Also they weren't saying that Nintendo is like Kick starter in that they're announcing products, it's that the nature of that announcement has changed. Rather than relying on the games media (which GAF hates) to disseminate a press release, they're talking directly to their customers, just as Kickstarter appeals directly to their audience. It's a shift in corporate communications strategy, and the article is just pointing that out.

There was another thread yesterday that talked about an article using the phrase "vaporware" to describe what Nintendo announced yesterday. Then we have this "kickstarter" article.

I think these articles are written this way because "game journalists" need to find interesting/click baiting angles to take on Nintendo Directs. Without an angle there's no reason for people to click since Nintendo Directs are all about giving information straight to consumers.

Man, so much negativity from all sides these days. Outside of the actual games the industry (fans included) is fucking depressing. It's not just this article or just GAF but it's like everything is always a race to shit on shit until everyone is just rolling around in one big pile of shit. I remember when discussing games was fun with lighthearted jabs thrown about. But now it just seems like we're all jaded and disconnected as fuck. Sorry, I know this is kind of off topic but it sucks. It's like I used to be able to rely on the internet to chat about games but even that's all messed up. As with anything that grows in popularity negative vibes come rushing in from all sides so I understand. Also I'm drunk. Yeah, avatar quote.

edit. Ha, it hasn't even been 2 minutes and I'm already aware that this post was stupid. I'll leave it though because why not.

at last, for christ's sake
In related news Kohler praises this article and whines about GAF's "blind rage against 'games journalism.'"'

He actually points to an article from the mid-80s to justify it. If that's not reaching...

...
I really miss the nineties. There were no ways for those arrogant wankers to let the world know about their useless babbling

We got a screenshot of the new Yoshi game
1) We got several screenshots and a trailer

2) YOU LINKED TO AN ARTICLE ON YOUR OWN WEBSITE WITH MULTIPLE SCREENSHOTS

Polygon: So terrible even we don't read our articles!

I'm not a games journalist so I don't know, but I wonder how it feels when Iwata Asks and Nintendo Directs generate more discussion among gamers than your own content. With Nintendo Direct in particular it can't be a good sign that one of the biggest names in gaming has a very effective method of direct communication to gamers that completely removes games journalists as the middle man.

I think we all missed that part where Iwata said that we should help Nintendo reach its financial goals or we will never get to see Metroid Prime 4. You know, that screenshot he teased us with at the end of the Direct. Sorry Iwata, I won't be pledging unless I see some kind of gameplay prototype.

Whether the article is positive or negative is completely irrelevant when the point the writer is trying to push is simply and plainly dumb.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Its almost as if the gaming media couldn't get used to Nintendo suddenly announcing bunch of new games, and its obvious they have gotten too flabbergasted here.

"promises promises promises"
"nintendo announces bunch of vaporwares"
"what nintendo has learned from kickstarter"
"Is Nintendo Trapped by Its Legacy?"

Its almost like this Nintendo direct is the first nintendo direct video for some people too, with tweet such as "The point is that having CEO Iwata stream TO FANS breaks a big wall down".

Woah Woah Woah careful with actually reading the article the thread is about, buddy.

I don't blame them 100% for their actions when Nintendo is effectively making them pretty useless and/or ineffective. If your job was being threatened by a corporate entity that is cutting you out of the loop you might respond in the same way.

And to think the Kickstarter one is among the least shitty.

I never really thought of Nintendo directs as a way to replace the gaming press, but it totally works on paper and in theory. Let's just hope that Nintendo stops acting like they possess state secrets from now on. Withholding information from the gaming press is one thing, but starving the audience as well is a dick move and Nintendo learned that the hard way this Winter.

I hope Sony is taking notes from Nintendo. Iwata and co are really onto something here imo. Some other folks have already said this, but I'll repeat it here. Nintendo has to get these directs and transcriptions(Iwata asks) onto the Wii U at the same time as the internet.

What they don't seem to understand, which is kind of amazing, is that their actions aren't helping their problem. It's only making it worse. They're just providing example after example for why Nintendo is doing this and solidify the justification people have for Nintendo is having these Nintendo Directs. Those that had or would go to them for Nintendo news just get turned off by their actions and get push more toward the Nintendo Directs. So when they do have something informative to say on the topic of Nintendo they'll just be ignored.
