LEGO GAF |OT2|: Building Dreams. Demolishing Wallets

Two of the best sets around. Feels like the Winter Village Cottage is pretty underrated. Haven't seen many people in this thread buying it.

I saw it on display at the local LegoStore, and I fell in love with the house! I bought it a few weeks ago with a coupon plus it was 20% off already, so it came to about 75bucks with tax!

We (family) won't build it until the day after Halloween or after Thanksgiving. But I can't wait to display Bakery, Post office, and Cottage!

God those early Star Wars sets were ugly. They have come a long, long way.

Anyways, finished Daily Bugle. Meh. Nice parts pack for making buildings but mediocre when done. The ship portion was pretty cool, and a very unique piece in it.

However, dem mini figs! Nova is cool. As is JJJ. But Doom! DOOM!

Yeah the old sets are kinda hard to find now. IMO the cottage is the best by fair but unfortunately the scale is out of whack so it's pretty much killed my motivation to buy the rest.

Well, I was totally wrong about the Fire Brigade. Amazing.
Dat second floor! Dat brick texture!

And now for the new favorite mini fig:

Ring Wraith is my favourite fig and that's basically a green version.
Nazgul have the awesome frayed capes though.

However Doom has the advantage of being Doom.

Now I just want an Annihilus figure that Nova can rip inside out.

Meat. He will send you a nice box of Christmas meat.

I am weak. :)

That and Green Grocer were probably my two most expensive sets.

OOooo, congrats on the train!!! I've seen it assembled with the winter village sets, and it makes such a nice addition. I consider that train, along with the Grand Carousel, as my 'set that got away'. Still kicking myself for passing those up back in the day, but I think I'll finally correct that mistake this year.

Definitely post pics when you get it finished!

Looking back at sets, I think "if only I started earlier."

I refuse to let any sets "get away" from this point on. There are some already that are "well, that would have been cool. But, oh well." Sets like Market Village and Shuttle Expedition. But they were never on the OMFG I must have it now!

Looking back at old sets that you never got is probably the greatest source of pain in existence. I'm just glad I got the Imperial Flagship and the Tumbler from 2005 before they went out of print.

I want the flagship. Really tempted to cave on that one. But I could also make one myself. The cool thing with ships is a trip to the fabric store and I could make my own sails. :)

Ah, nostalgia. I loved legos as a kid. Probably my favorite sets were Medieval, Space, and Pirates

Speaking of Pirates...

Best Christmas present ever
My dad was a district manager for K Mart in the late 80s, so I would get free sets sometimes from reps. I remember Black Seas Barracuda getting delivered to my house on the day after Christmas one year. And the Whirl and Wheel Super Truck another time.

Is it still possible to get it for the "normal" price? The flagship is probably in the top 3 sets I own - better than all the modulars. The only knock against it is the fact it only comes with 4 canons (the ship has slots for 8).

pfft, my pirate ship could beat your flagship

Only if you happen to find a really oblivious locally-owned toy shop someplace. It certainly cant be found on the internet at retail price any more.

Hey LegoGaf,

When I see folks on here talking about "piecing out a set", does that mean they are taking a list of all the parts in a set they want and buying them individually? Most likely in the hopes it will be cheaper?

I'd like to finish collecting the Agents sets and the Volcano Base is money I would rather spend on a UCS set (over $200 for a complete set) so I was wondering if there were other ways to build it.

Any tips would be most appreciated! It's been fun following everyone on here. I don't really have much to add other than I finally entered the modular community and got Town Hall last weekend. What an amazing design.

You guys all rock (and it's not even compliment day).
yea piecing a se tout means we get the pieces individually, for current sets and themes it is hardly ever cheaper or worth the effort, better go look for good deals on current sets, but as soon as sets are OOP (out of production) its the only viable way to go.
I am currently in the process of buying all the parts for the UCS Millennium Falcon, half way there, better not think about the cost though :p

I feel the same way, I don't want any sets to get away... But I can't afford to buy them all, and I have no space. Already have a huge set backlog. So when I pass on stuff like Helm's Deep, I know I'm going to regret it.

On the other hand, I found Hogwarts, so there's my girlfriend's birthday present sorted!

As a first post...I feel obligated to tell LEGO-GAF that you guys have taken up so much of my time, and money. I read the entire first OT, and I am now a member of the "VIP club". I have 3 modulars (Fire Brigade, Grand Emporium, Pet Shop), the haunted house, and the rest of the Monster Fighters line, various Series 8 and 9 minifigs, etc. I spent part of my Christmas vacation sorting through a huge tote of 10k+ bricks from when i was a kid, so my nieces wouldn't have any, shall we say, "Quebecois building blocks" in with their quality bricks that they seem to have inherited from me. I no longer have use of my kitchen table (which I had to eventually put the leaf into). I blame you all for this. Oblgatory "dat second floor".

Oh, and Mickcenery, your Elite Knight from Dark Souls was unreal.

Not counting the UCS Falcon, it is these 2 sets for me as well.

Such a great unique set.

Looking at Bricklink, it is going for about $1,200 new minimum, which is about 500% of the original price.

Moral of the story, as others have already said, is don't let any sets that you think you want get away, if you can. The Carousel here was discontinued by LEGO only one year, and the Holiday Train only a few months.

Alright, so do we want a new MOC contest or not? And if so, what set are we using as the baseline?

Personally I think one of the $20 or less Creator sets that just released is the best to go for. They are readily available nearly everywhere right now, and also have a big variety among them.

The one I would say no to is this:

We already did a car for the first one. Although the Highway Speedster looks to have a LOT of great parts in it.

I wouldn't mind the Power Mech or the Highway Speedster. Sets with SNOT pieces should work well.

what about the eagle, that would be a tough nut to crack ^^

No issues with the Eagle. I already have it, and have not integrated the pieces back into the collection. :)

Was just looking for a way to justify buying the other Creator sets to my wife. :)

But the Fierce Flyer would be a fun one to try. Lots of hinge pieces to play with in it.

31004_alt1.jpg

EDIT: Highway Speedster is tons of SNOT work. Power Mech I think would be fun just for the joint pieces. Thunder Wings is a nice hybrid between the two. Small Cottage would be interesting because it is a lot of big pieces. Another bonus to that one is that it comes with a mini fig.

You have good taste! Welcome!

I think that keeping it cheaper would allow for more to participate. Personally, even though I rarely MOC, I think the Power Mech holds greater potential for MOC variety.

The price of entry is what made the first one nice. The sub $20 price does make it easier for more to get involved. And despite how interesting I think a genre set would be to MOC with, NOTHING gives you a variety of pieces quite like a Creator set.

Also, the multiple models per Creator set also help to show new techniques and ideas to those that do not MOC or build often. It really is the best line out there.

ok, lets get some structure into the decision process.
