People who've beaten CoM, teach me how to not hate the battle system.
Stop playing it on the GBA.
That's all it took for me, anyway.
I button mashed my way to level 42 on Re: and I stopped playing. I should learn the battle system and deal with it.Learn how to play it? It's the best battle system of the series by a large margin, for being both action-packed and strategical.

No, you shouldn't. It's an absolute horseshit battle system.
I might buy this and never touch CoM. To this day I have no idea what the fuck they were thinking beyond, "Well, it's a handheld game. Better go with cards!"
as well as the inclusion of an in-game encyclopedia
You can't it is shit.
I still hope they pump KH 2.5 or whatever fast enough out.
And then KH3.. yeah out in 2025.
Versus will never come out
I still think they should have included birth by sleep in KH 1.5 from a story stand point. Hopefully 2.5 is around the corner.
They can do both simultaneously, at least to a degree. Nomura has pretty much made & admitted that the Osaka team is nowadays the KH team. They are working on some secret project that could very well turn out to be KHIII. And, from what I've gathered, they are the only team (or one of the only) that isn't affected at all by XIV 2.0's development, being separate from the Tokyo offices & all.
Oh, and to that one poster above (sorry, too lazy to scroll down to see your user name & quote you at this point when I didn't multiquote from the start..), no, (ReCoM's battle system is not even close to being the best in the series. KHII FM, BBS, ReCoded & 3D all crap on it. It (Re:CoM) DOES, however, have the honor of being the game that begun Osaka team's venture into developing what is one of the best action RPG combat systems of all time.

Have you played Final Mix? On the hardest difficulty level? Because there was definitely a need for strategy (don't know if I simply didn't level up enough, but I usually felt a little underpowered, so a lot of battles were quite tough, even normal ones and not just boss battles). I.e. using the a Drive Form at the right times could save your life and knowing when to attack was key.Never played Coded or 3D, but KH2 FM's battle system? Lmao. It's just a flashy button-mash fest. Hardly any strategy involved, and magic was useless.

Yeah, but even in Vanilla KHII if you didn't grind much & didn't use EXP Boost & some other boost abilities (but could use all abilities that gave you more attack options, i.e. longer combos), you could get so underleveled that some normal Nobody types could kill you with two strikes & bosses with one if you didn't have full health. You couldn't just mindlessly buttonmash your way through the battles.Definitely not that hard, even while sticking to that No Exp ability. Go for an artifical Low Level Challenge if you want the most of your KH2.
Chain of Memories actually wasn't that bad now that I remember it. It took me a little time to get used to the card system but once I got it down, it was pretty good...the Zero card was such a lifesaver but some of the bosses in Riku's mode were...AUGH.

I remember Riku's mode being really easy. I remember struggling the most on Marluxia final form as maybe Riku Replica 4th bout. (I think I died to Larxene II once as well) but all with Sora. Riku's mode I had no issues with.
The problem with KHII's for me (aside from the gratuitous use of Reaction Commands) isn't so much the battle system as it is that there isn't anything in the non Final Mix releases of the game that forces you to actually learn some of the combat's intricacies. Sephiroth is damn near the only boss in vanilla KHII that punishes button mashing, and even then he's still a joke if you use Counterguard and/or Reflect.
Admittedly, it's pretty stupid that it took an entire re-release of the game for them to get it right, and even then, you have to play on Critical Mode to get the most out of it, but a Critical Mode run in KHIIFM really lets the battle system shine. With a lot of the enemy encounters, you actually have to plan out and prioritize how and when you'll use all the tools available to you, which is how the game should have been in the first place.

It's not even an issue, in my opinion. The games are for kids first and foremost and I'll be the first to trstify: Yeah, as a twelve-year-old I felt pretty bad ass.
As much as I took great delight at entertaining the notion like a little turd a few pages back... they really aren't. Well, they surely are on the surface, but that doesn't mean there aren't spiritual concepts buried in that eye-candy Disney-esque pile: doppelgänger (overused in KH), subconsciousness, astral projection, mental manipulation (by adults on kids here)... all said concepts that can be understood by kids in a glimpse, but whose deepness can only be grasped by grown-ups. I would have gone on if I didn't intend to post a write-up of the symbolism behind Nomura games in Community threads at some point. Great part of why Nomura generates so much heat and is blamed for everything that goes wrong at SE nowadays is precisely because he overstepped his bounds of character-designer a while back. Yep, folks.
And then.....riku vs riku replica (no Mickey card ;_ and ansem battles happened.

My point, exactly. So weak that you have to be on the fence at all time and analysis the enemies' behavior as if you were playing a fighting game online. Said it once, will say it again: Vanilla LLC KH2 is much harder than No Exp FM+. LLC FM+ is downright impossible. Yep, folks.
In a word.
To be fair, in spite of as confident as I sounded, my memory may be deficient here. Played both no less than almost six years ago, actually. Beat the LLC on December 2006 and FM+ right when it came out. Descriptions stand, at any rate.No way. I did a LLC in vanilla KH2 (I think I fought Sephiroth at lv36 because I had a lucky Anti-Form), and it's nowhere near the difficulty of lv1CM or even regular Critical Mode. I couldn't even finish the game at lv1, got stuck in the last boss.
Narolf, Disney is involved. I like the direction and design and while I was playing them, yes: I did think the story was quite thoughtful. But it's irrelevant to the point: they're for kids first and foremost because that's part of the deal. If that wasn't the case, the themes and topics you mention would be far more surface level and probably handled more explicitly.
Wow. Visually it looks simple and clean.
