okay i played online with some high-lvl guys and they carried me trough some quests. im feeling like a noob (again).
what armor should i aim for in the beginning?
Some of the first sets are pretty good, one in particular gives auto-tracker which is very helpful for learning movement of the monster and knowing where its safe. I think thats the hunter set.
The best starter gear is the Black Belt set but its not really starter since you have to do the training missions to get the coins and tickets needed to build it. And with that you have to take the monster down first to unlock the training.
Hmm, I'll start working towards the Hunter armor and the Black Belt right away. I'm about halfway through the solo 2 star quests.
Can u guys add me plz (i play on the VITA). PSN: DerWalde.
Thank you and good hunting!
I think that kut-ku armor is not bad for starter equipment. It has good armor value, decent buffs to damage output, and is super easy to make. You could probably get decent use out of it until you reach high rank.
It doesn't matter how great your low rank armor is; you will need/want to replace it ASAP when you reach high rank.
Also, while I like the convenience of auto-tracker, I think it is better to get into the habit of using paintballs. You don't always get to choose what armor skills to bring to a quest so it's better not to get too used to having any given armor skill.
Awesome. Because of you and Grinchy I have installed MHFU on my Vita again. Had to remove it for wipeout DLC. Damn 8gb card is full.

What does "high rank" mean exactly?
32GB yo, get on it
Group quests I think were reason enough that you shouldn't rely too much on skills.I suggested Auto-tracker to learn the patterns of the monsters, where the go, but yes paintballing is the way to go later on as there are several other skills that are far better the Auto-Tracker. Outside of the training hall solo and group quests I cannot think of any other time you cannot pick your armor to be able to get the skills you want though.

It annoyed me not being able to find people interested in group quests because they couldn't then jump into a quest decked out in their impressive, end game equipment set specialized for a very specific boss/quest.
Then again, I'm also a fan of the training school/arena type quests.
Plug that in! I'll do MP with you sometime on the weekends. I even have 2 other friends that would join and we could do a 4player group.
I actually had my PS3 wireless but would run a line on Friday MHFUnights (thats what we called it, clever I know).
I would love to but my router is in a completely different room. I'd need like a 100 foot ethernet cable lol. My old apartment was completely wired up so I could plug into the wall of any room. I used adhoc party for Peace Walker but never tried MHFU
There are probably wireless adapters that you could use to effectively turn your wireless connection back into a wired connection for your PS3.I would love to but my router is in a completely different room. Will add.
In my opinion, definitely. There is plenty different about the two. There are a handful of very good wiki and guide sites to help you through the japanese. I am actually looking to get Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD for PS3 once it comes back down a bit in price.
I would be willing to play with some people. I only got like the first 7 quests done so I'm a scrub
I haven't played all of MHP3, but off the top of my head some of the major differences for me were MHP3rd has no Underwater fighting. MHP3rd has the weapons that were removed from Tri: Bow, Gunlance, Hunting Horn and Dual Swords.
I would head over here to one of the better Wikia sites and check out info for MHP3rd, Monster Hunter Wiki

It should probably work. You should definitely let the thread know once you've tried.Hmm, I think I have an old wireless ethernet bridge around here somewhere. Do you think that might do what I need it to? That would be awesome to get some AdHoc Party action going on.

Nice. I wish I had seen your post earlier.I found my old wireless bridge and I got adhoc working. Hell yeah. If anyone wants to play online, just add me (PSN is Grinchy). I'm only HR3 but I'll probably be ranking up pretty quickly.
Sorry to bump this up, buy I just bought this with some PSN credit and I could use some protips...
It looks like I will be playing this solo, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Is it your first MH game?
If so, stick with the village elder quests for a while. Don't go in the guild hall yet.
First just be mindful of the movements of what you are fighting. Once you get to Yian Kut Ku, fight it several times until you get to a point where you don't cart or take very little damage. At this point you'll have figured the game mechanics out.
Get weapons and armor that are easy to create. Once you reach 4* Kirin shows up, get a gun with Pellet fire and kill it. Kirin armor is very easy to create and gives great defense for low rank. (it also gives Element Attack Up which is nice if you use Sword and Shield or Dual Swords).
Another armor you'll probably need is the Blangonga armor to deal with Shen Gaoren (a necessary quest) and it's tremors. I'd recommend getting the Kirin armor first, a fire weapon of any kind and then beat up on Blangonga for it's armor.
Another armor you'll probably need is Black Diablos. Black Diablos has reputation of being one of the hardest monsters, but the low rank one really isn't hard at all. You'll need that armor to deal with the wind effect caused by Lao Shan Lung's (also a necessary quest) legs.
After that it just kind of flows naturally. High Rank is pretty scary at first but quite doable once you get a set of HR armor. Same for G-Rank (guild hall only).
In monster hunter just go train with each of the weapons. There is a tutorial in god eater. The only really tricky thing is coming up with good bullets.I also picked up God Eater, is that a good place to start to learn how to play these types of games?
I haven't played this in a while, but I still hate Kirin (was trying to kill it with a fire longsword).
Haha, non of this makes any sense yet, just booted it up this morning. Yep, first MH game. I will keep this in mind. Thank you.
First thing to do is go through the weapon trainings at the training school. Don't settle for just one weapon type though. Each weapon plays differently and certain monsters are easier with certain weapons. Rathlos an Rathian I prefer hammers, while Diablos and Monoblos I use a gunlance, Khezu is Sword and Shield, and plessy... sweet sweet plessy is a bow or bowgun.
Doing the weapon trainings will also help you learn the attacks of each monster. Like it was said once you can beat Kutku easily just keep doing it to get the materials for its armor. its a great starting set also if you go through the training school you will eventually get enough material to make the black belt armor which for HR1-4ish is IMO the best armor you can get.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me or ask here.
Edit:
12 minute apart double post...
Fuck that thing
Has anyone been successful at getting local co-op to work for this game with one player on psp and the other on vita? I've got a UMD copy that I haven't even opened yet. Now that I've got a vita I thought it might be fun to try with a friend. I've been having trouble finding information about whether this works. If it turns out they don't play nice together, I'd save some money on the PSN download. Thanks!
It absolutely should work, yes! I have tested it before right when I picked up my Vita. Just choose Online Gathering hall and join the same Room. You should ad-hoc connect and be all set.
