Aliens: Colonial Marines |OT| Game Over Man, GAME OVER!

The best thing to happen with this thread is that Jim Sterling has blessed GAF with his presence. Real talk.

Jim, your review of Boob Wars was the funniest thing ever.

The other three core franchises Sega talked about were Total War, Football Manager and Sonic the Hedgehog. And with their acquisition of Relic and the Company of Heroes IP, it's probably a safe bet that CoH will be a core franchise too.

Yakuza is huge in Japan. Not sure about here.

Does Sega have the Warhammer 40k license?

The status of that licence is unclear. It may still be in be hands of THQ's administrators, or it may have reverted back to GW automatically for them to sell again. It wasn't mentioned in any of the paperwork so far.

Wow the trailer for the game on XBL shows the demo version with the better graphics / lighting engine.

This has to be false advertising. Law suits at the ready anyone?

See that there's quite a few folks on Steam trying to get their money back. Good luck guys.

publishers/devs have always shown games looking better/running smoother than final product. that's how advertising works.

This is probably the worst game I've played in the last couple of years, probably worst then RE:ORC, because of its potential.

However, playing last night gave us (I started campaign in 4 player coop) one of the funniest nights in a long time but at the expense of the game itself. Here is a small list of things that happened in a 45 mins session, we did the first two levels.

Right at the beginning, where the marine loads the pulse rifle, as the game starts two of us have an invisible pulse rifle that we can't fire.

The NPC falls of the map.

The NPC somehow dies.

Where you open the door with the power loader, one of the guys got in, then somehow exited the power loader, then decided to slide across the room like a slug and die.

We tested this out again, this time when we were shooting the guy in the power loader, he died, but before he did, he walked across the room and did an abrupt backflip, then died.

One of us got stuck in a doorway for a good couple of minutes.

It would teleport people, even if they were right next to each other, I mean WTF?

And you've all seen the numerous AI problems.

All in all, fun times were had (not really).

My girlfriend rented the 360 version this afternoon. We're going to play it through to completion later.

Split screen. Express elevator to Hell, going down, etc, etc.

The worst thing about all these videos about the game is all this added text people are putting in their videos. I don't care what you think, let me just watch it and make my own opinion.

Well after the CODEHUNTERS plagiarism shit that Pitchford and Gearbox tried to pull off and subsequent denials then admitting used as "artistic inspiration" I'm surprised anyone takes a word that comes out of this guys mouth honestly.

For your perusal if you not aware of how Borderlands "unique" art style is pretty much a cut and paste. How Gearbox is still in business is beyond me.

Holy shit... they were even fucking up Borderlands with an unorganized mishmash of derivative ideas. This is at the same time they're floundering with Aliens? After they fucked up BiAHH?

Jesus... it's the art style that saved Borderlands, and they fucking stole that. Crazy.

I remember the story about the last second stroke of genius art change... this is a company of liars. I don't care if their next game is the greatest game ever, never another dollar from me.

So what franchises does Sega have left after this debacle?

Edit: I checked and apparently there's Sonic the Hedgehog, Football Manager and Total War.

They also have Company of Heroes and Warhammer(not 40k).

I don't understand what's so appalling about this game. A few missions in and I'd never guess this got a 42 on Metacritic. It's uninspired and mediocre and doesn't even begin to take advantage of its license in a meaningful way, but... games that get ripped like this tend to be broken messes and this is just kind of a bog standard FPS. It doesn't look horrible, there's nothing about the gunplay that feels busted, I haven't had any glitches... it just seems like a standard issue B-grade FPS to me.

Of course I wouldn't recommend it to anyone because there's so many other better FPSes out there. I'm only playing it out of a sense of obligation, having played EVERY other Alien game out there. But it's been more of a humdrum experience than a painful one.

The Gearbox forums are littered with people saying their 360 save file has been 100% deleted. I'm kinda scared to play this game any more until it's fixed. However, this is also an issue in Halo 4 and 343 still hasn't bothered to fix it.

Serious issues like deleting all save files are unacceptable and should legally require the publisher to issue affected players a full refund.

It's not a shit cake unless someone squirts some fresh diarrhea on top.

I might sell my copy of Borderlands 2 after this, I can't play or buy anything from Gearbox anymore, not after the piss poor ethics they have displayed.

I finished playing this last night, and honestly, I'm embarrassed for the developers. I don't know what they spent their money on, but it certainly wasn't developing A.I., Textures, Event Scripting or the Story. I've played amateur mods multitudes better than what they released.

The multiplayer can be fun but again, what did they spend their money on? It looks like shit and the gameplay has been done much better in other games.

I feel sorry for Sega, they're the real losers out of this. I only lost £30, I can't imagine how pissed I'd be if I were Sega.

Edit: The stealth section was probably my favourite part of the game, besides the ridiculous alien walks.

If you're playing on PC I can understand this point of view. The game seems to run well, and it isn't outright broken to play. The art direction is good, and co-op can be quite fun at times. On the other hand, the console versions are of unbelievably poor quality, I've never seen anything like it. Lighting and brightness issues, tearing in almost every frame, textures that never load, and much more besides. On 360 most of the time it looks like a bad original Xbox game. It would have been unacceptable as a launch title. As a much hyped "AAA" release coming out near the end of the generation, after having been in development so long, it's like some kind of video gaming war crime.

Your opinion is pretty much the same as mine. Playing on pc and it seems like a pretty average FPS to me. It's not great, but I'm still enjoying playing through the campaign and the multiplayer seems decent enough.

The backlash is so strong with this game, that it will inevitably lead to "Hmm It's not so bad." reactions. In fact, some people will want to try it out just to see "how bad" it is.

Just finished my pc run of the game. I won't lie, the game is bad with some nice moments. But it is a guilty pleasure to me. I love the Alien franchise, so aside from the game breaking bugs, crappy ai, outdated graphics, awful voice acting... i kinda liked it. I "rented" my friends steam account to play it and i'm happy i didn't pay for it.

Watched Aliens the Director's Cut and that helped cure my angst over this mess of a game. May drop a fiver on AvP 2000 or watch Predator tonight.

I'm pretty close to finishing the campaign on Hardened difficulty. I do wish I could try the game on 360 though, just to see how big of a performance difference it has. It almost sounds like a different game.

Edit: Not that anyone cares lol...but Randy's twitter says some Shift codes are coming this weekend. Lets hope one of them is for the 8gb patch.

WTF happen. I thought Gearbox was one of the "good" guys. Duke was understandable as it was a 95% development cluster fuck from 3drealms and 5% gearbox getting it out the door.

But this iconic IP fucking deserved better (and it "offical" cannon LOL!). Gearbox has really lost my respect. And by reading all the "reports" about how GB handled it, WOW (insert profanity here).

Fuck, who will remember Borderlands in 10 years, but this will forever be a shitstain on the Aliens IP.

I am sorry for the swearing, but this was bullshit.

Also I would like to note I have not bought or played the game, but judging from reactions this response seems justifiable.

So this game is crap. Is AVP on PC any good? (2010 release).

It's not a great game by any means, but after playing Colonial Marines I've gained a new found respect for it. Rebellion actually tried to make something good, they just fell short in a few areas.

Honestly AVP2 Gold is the best Aliens game we're probably ever going to get.

I remember some Gearbox quote about the first-person view for the xenomorphs being too disorientating during testing.

lol

Speechless.

I think that tears it, I'm officially off the Gearbox bandwagon. I love Borderlands 1, but it became clear with the second title, they weren't able to replicate the same magic and now with this, the information from the QA tester in the other thread, I've lost all faith and respect in them as a developer.

Just finished up the game on hardened difficulty. A little mini-review.

Pros:
-I enjoyed the locations from Aliens being incorporated into the game.

-Also thought they did a pretty good job with the weapons. All of the base line weapons have an upgrade system, there are also Legendary variations of these weapons that you can find from the movies. For example Hudson's Pulse Rifle.

-Multiplayer seems competent from my limited play time.

Cons:
-Dated Graphics

-Spotty A.I.

-Story I didn't care about

-Anytime it deviates from the corridor FPS concept it feels clumsy so most of the boss fights are not enjoyable.

Overall- The PC versions sits at about a 7/10 for me. I enjoyed the locations/weapons and the combat was solid. It felt like an average fps to me, but I felt like I enjoyed it a little more because of the Aliens license.

Jeez, that puts things in stark perspective. In hindsight, Rebellion's AVP2010 looks good.

How the hell was ACM in development for 6 years?
Screen tearing is unbelievable. The lack of effort in this whole thing is shocking - fuck you Randy Pitchford and Gearbox.

All this fiasco all week has made me return to playing AvP 2010... played a couple hours today. Finished the marine campaign and started the alien campaign (after shelving and almost selling the game 2 years ago). Then jumped into some random online matches.

I had a blast. I don't know why... but seeing the flaws of ACM made me appreciate it a lot more. They really did nail the atmosphere. And this was the (surely crappiest) PS3 version.
