Lightning - "Why the hate?"

I like Lightning. I think she's kind of hot. But aside from that, I think she's one of the better FF characters in recent years. That's just my opinion.

So just wondering why the hate going on? Let me guess, is it NOT her as a character but more about what she represents with current Square-Enix's tumultuous times: like how they push her into every game, FFXIII's disappointment, Dissidia, ios, etc.

I don't think she's that bad as a character. As for the games she stars in...that I can understand, give or take.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
A certain Toriyama quote would fit perfectly here.

Thinking back most of the FF lead characters sucked in their own way. Its the side-characters that build the personality. I dont dislike or like her really.

She's less of a character, and more like a very sexy action figure.

Because this is 90% of her character.

Is it just me or has she not had a consistent personality in the XIII series? The first game had her all bitter and hateful, the second game she was all happy and more comforting to others, and in the third game she's doing things that clash with her personality from the first game regarding gods and stuff.

I think a better question would be why do you like her? (except you think she's hot)

She's not a good character, I appreciate tough heroines but Lightning has no depth. Vanille and Fang seemed more important to the L'cie plot than her. And in FF XIII-2, she's just a tool of Etro.

Formerly worldrevolution. The only reason I am nice to anyone else is to avoid being banned.
I really like her too, but I actually like Serah even more. I'll leave this thread now though since it's known what will follow.

People blame Toriyama's obsession with her for why Square keeps making Final Fantasy XIII sequels instead of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Kingdom Hearts III, Final Fantasy XV, etc.

She's a Female Cloud who exists for the sole purpose of being an idiot's digital personification of the perfect woman.

She exists within a game composed of horribly vapid characters surrounded by an environment and story just as soulless and stupid. She is a monolith of banality in a sea of mediocrity.

It probably doesn't help the fact that people hyped themselves to death over the game and the characters.

I'm sure there's an apt batman quote for this. Something about hero we need...

"I think she's kind of hot", this thread started in a real creepy way

Yep because of this I couldn't even take it seriously.

A flat character, dumb lines, she doesn't even dress like police woman!

And yeah she is boring.

Most of 13's and 13-2's characters are else boring or annoying.

Exceptions are Fang Saszh

Yeah, OP you help her detractors argument more than you do your own by mentioning that you "think she's kinda hot".

That's all there is to Lightning, if anything. She has no personality and she's the most boring textbook definition of beauty. She's a shallow non-character appreciated by very shallow individuals.

Lightning was fine. Sazh wasnt too bad either.

The rest of the cast not as much. Esp Snow & His Jersey Shore Friends / Hope

Didnt help that the game wasnt all that great on top of that...

I can imagine liking her if you spend most of your time looking at her art and listening to the soundtrack and fantasizing about what she could represent... but in game, she is cardboard. A series of pretentious monologues that mean far less than you probably think.

...this thread is going to be pleasant and it's going to go very well. I can feel it.

I've already reiterated why I don't like her in this post:

I'm with Kagari--I feel like Lightning was a character who was conceived to be directed towards 20-something females (possibly in an older sibling position), but she ultimately didn't deliver on that front. At least to me, she didn't. Lightning kind of lacked the emotional scenes that allowed you to easily empathize with her or to identify with her as a multifaceted character who isn't just there as a character whose sole purpose is to look cool or to let her fists do the talking. There is a person behind those fists and I'd like to know more about her. But I didn't get to know much about her.

At the end of it all, I feel rather disappointed with Lightning's execution. As a female and (probably overprotective) older sister, I had something additional to look forward to in a Final Fantasy: another female protagonist, whom I feel like I could somehow empathize with, easily acknowledge her personal struggles, and feel like I could walk in her shoes. Someone who isn't just an aggressive soldier in a miniskirt, but someone with emotions that I could easily relate to. While Lightning probably resonated with other females (in this very thread, even), I feel like she didn't resonate with me as a result of being rather one-note. I feel like I resonated more with Vanille and Fang than Lightning.

It's kind of funny... I felt like I resonated with Fang (a character whom I also consider to be rather one-dimensional), who's Lightning's foil. Fang's plight mirrors Lightning's in a way (she's out to find and save someone important to her, someone whom she'd considered as her sister (or whatever you wanna think they were)) but what Fang had was small development with Vanille... and Vanille had a lot of development in that game via game narration, her chapters with Sazh, and her story with Fang. Fang somewhat benefitted from Vanille's story and execution, but Lightning's story somewhat suffered because you merely had short flashback sequences of her yelling at her sister for being a fool, the intro sequence that took place in media res prior to any flashbacks, and maybe some of her conversations with Snow. But after all of that, I feel like I didn't understand her or could empathize her in some way. I know that some other people could totally understand and relate to her, but I felt like I couldn't. By comparison--if I really needed to do this--I felt like I could understand Celes, Sarisa, and Yuna a lot more than her because they had the backstories, character interactions, and character relationships to back their personalities up.

If you'd read the prequel novel prior to this, you'd see that the Farron sisters are somewhat closer than this, but if you merely go through the game without reading any of the supplementary (near-essential) materials never released in English, you aren't going to get much out of the Farron sisters' relationship. They tried to rectify this with FFXIII-2, but I ended up enjoying and understanding Serah as a character far more than Lightning.

You could replace Lightning with a boxing kangaroo and not lose a ton of character development. She's extremely bland except for when she's punching people.

She doesn't even work as the solid/serious member in an ensemble cast, because she has essentially no meaningful unique interaction with most of the cast anyway.

I'd probably like her considerably more if she were the alcoholic version from Texts from FFXIII.

I just really like her design, she was good in 13 and fulfilled her role well I guess. By 13-2 I didn't really understand wtf was going on with her.

Her dialog and demeanor/attitude blows chunks. FFXIII might have the most unlikable cast of characters of all time, and it's all because of the horrendous script.

LuuKyK thread incoming.

Now the reason why I don't like Lightning that much is because I don't think she's a good character at this point. I kind of liked her in FFXIII, even though her "character development" was handled through a very random, yet very obvious epiphany and she ends up being another team motivational speaker for the remaining 30 hours of the game. She's barely in XIII-2, but yet she managed to spit on all of her development in XIII by becoming subservient to dumb deities when she spent the entirety of XIII rebelling against deities (often without any kind of plan).

At this point, she's less of a character and more of a "badass action girl" symbol
and Toriyama's significant other-wish fulfillment.

because she's the face of a bad game? which got a sequel that no one asked for? that got ANOTHER sequel no one asked for?

deserved or not, she's the face of square fucking up and burning all the good will they built in the 16 and 32 bit eras.

Is it a rare opinion to find Lightning unattractive? Because I really do.

Also, I just find her, all the other characters, and the world that they've shown as really bland. I made it through XIII but I could only manage half of XIII-2. It's just a boring world to me.

Lightning's so-so and tolerable - she's just bland. Not the best character in the FFXIII series, nor the worst. She lacks personality. There have been other characters in other FF games and RPGs that pull off the aloof, distant style better.

At least she's way better than FFX's Tidus. Now that is a FF main character that I despise.

I like her design, but that's as far as it goes.

Toriyama is a bad writer. She's not as bad as Serah or Vanille (to name a few) but she's hardly memorable...
