Destiny Reveal Thread

I think Bungie does not understand that part of the reason Halo 1 was so impressive was because only the Xbox had the technical ability to show it off. If it was a multiplatform game that had to release on PS2 and GC as well it would not have been anywhere as impressive.

Making this a current gen console game is just a bad idea all around.

Wish they would have shown more, or any, gameplay... but so far the overall idea sounds pretty cool.

also, this is all I can think about.

lol I really hope they have a reference to this in the game.

Yeah, but if they have any intention of making money on this, it needs to be on systems that have an install base.

Once the 2 other versions are out though, i will be really surprised if they manage to stick with their yearly update. Supporting 4 versions for a game like this seems crazy for one studio.

They made money on Halo CE and that had a 0 installed user base on a new console competing with ps2. I think they'll be fine with next gen only especially with micro-transactions.

So am guessing you teleport across the solar system in those warp gates; then randomly encounter some people on the load in.

So the servers will likely be hidden somewhat unless you are in a 'party'.
That should work well with the FPS elements.

There really should be a PC version, it sounds like arrogance to not make one. A sort of 'no we're console developers'; which is silly since their launching over a generational gap.

so, a clip of butcher talking.... that dont mean shit.

I'm not saying it in any attempt to discredit them. Just trying to point out that they're definitely holding back in what they could be showing us. The new video is so short and part of it happened a long while ago.

So, has anyone considered maybe they didn't show a lot of gameplay because it's probably in fucking alpha (or pre-alpha) stage and isn't supposed to look pretty yet?

Fucking hell.

That's what I hope it is, but why the hell would you fly all these people out for an all-day event when its that early, or when you only have 5 seconds of gameplay to show? No one does that. Shit went down behind the scenes, and the fact that a major event is happening 3 days away probably has something to do with it.

Another thing, those character models look pretty fucking bad. They look nowhere near as good as their concept art ones.

Killzone 2 was pretty grey but still...

Bear in mind this was 4 years ago (and doing 32 players online). Why on earth have they decided to go current-gen...

Not sure if you saw this or not: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=513879

There is hope!

This is just not comparable. That Killzone map is a teeny little box for PVP. Destiny is something completely completely different. Killzone is all windowdressing.

I honestly think you'll fly between worlds. Much like the Halo Reach space level. We always assumed that level was in there for test purposes.

They say that you can run into strangers while you're playing with friends in your group. Missions could be instanced and still share connectivity. Similar to what people previously mentioned about Dark Souls and Journey. So let's say, you go on a mission on Mars with a team of 3 friends. It creates Game #563 on the matchmaking network. Let's say a game can support up to 32 players in total. It would mean the next solo guy who plays that mission might join into that game without knowing it, and the next 6-man party might also end up on that game seamlessly. It's also possible that a game instance can support different missions and objectives in a shared location, so sometimes players can fight each other if they're in different factions.

All of this can be achieved without dedicated persistent worlds outside of the hub.

This ^^

Sounds perfect.

It's like we have to go over this every time pre-release footage is shown in these ViDocs: WORK IN PROGRESS. Criticise textures, animations, etc when the damn game ships, lol

Also, I think that once the next gen consoles are revealed and Bungie is able to talk about next gen versions, I think they'll market those even more than the current gen versions.

Agreed. Sony and MS are both going to promote the hell out of this game unless someone like MS ponies up cash for exclusive content.

Reusing video from previous Vidocs and the reveal itself sounds like they werent quite ready to show what they did.

Did something force their hand?

Fucking hell.

This, but I guess many of us are finding it a bit hard to believe because it's been in development for a while.

Maybe they were doing the story/engine/prototypes during that time? It's not like a sequel that you can make in 2-3 years...

Incredibly ambitious. I hope they can pull it off.

Pathway out of darkness video: "whats bigger than halo?"

Well cod, gears, battlefield off the top of my head. Really bad question to build up hype.

Not like Guild Wars then (aside from literally one mission in the entire game which allowed for two groups).

Seems interesting, though.

Compare the scopes of the two games.

The only reason I can fathom why they are doing current gen is because of the install base. There are still a lot of people with 360's and PS3's, and I'm sure Activision wants to capitalize on the huge market still available. I do think Destiny will have a large presence with next gen consoles upon launch, however.

It was mentioned in a preview that you can fly to other planets. I think those gates are supposed to be the games version fast travel, but there's no information on that one way or another.

Lastly, group themes. Mostly just a repeat of the group avatars, but with a wider resolution.

Have they said anything about microtransactions?

with how's it all sounding i'd be really surprised if they dont try to monetize pieces of DLC or Cosmetic stuff and whatnot

Bank on it.

The Activision-Bungie contract mentions major plans for downloadable content. This includes major expansions, smaller-sized DLCs, and allusions to microtransactions.

Also, on Bungie.net Terms of Use, they have a section about Virtual Currency and Virtual Items.

The one bad thing about it i'll say is this: its painful to watch something this ambitious fall into the limitations of what will probably be nearing a previous-gen by the time it comes out

It just fucking sucks to hear them keep on throwing the world AMBITIOUS and HUGE around when they're working on such old hardware.

So once this get released Bungie will be called "Inovators"(MP comments) even if Sony started it with Demon Souls and Journey. Which means once again when sony does it in their games, they will be called copy cats (remember Kinect and how original it was? (everyone forgot Eyetoy)The glorified Eyetoy that's all Kinect is).

Rant over

Sony started "it" with Demon Souls and Journey..? What are you talking about?

Well, considering how ambitious this game sounds, the engine alone probably took, and may still be taking, a shit-ton of time to make. I'm not a game developer so I don't know the typical protocol and process for game-making, but I'd imagine making the game's engine and perfecting its "playability" comes way before pretty-ing up the graphics.

Seriously, Bungie stated this was a glimpse into their new IP. They NEVER said it would be in-depth. Have some sense, people.

If Destiny I has more then 32 players in any one instance i'll be very, very surprised.

did they actually have a 1 year contract? Somehow things have changed as it seems like 360/ps3 are launching at the same time? I remember reading in the leaked docs, it depended on whether or not they could get the ps3 version up to the same "quality" as the 360 version. It appears they were able to.

I think the 1 year exlusive was just for next gen versions of the 1st game which obviously have not been shown yet, could be wrong though. I think that's why some people speculated that this event was put right before the ps4 reveal to steal ps4 thunder with some Durango footage shown. Who knows maybe that was the plan but things changed last minute.

I have a feeling not that much ps4 stuff next week will actually be shown also with much of GAF disappointed, still think we won't see as much as people think until E3. Sony and MS just want us to eat up all these rumors and leaks to get the hype out there building up to E3 and it is working.

Reading through this thread reminds me why developers don't like to show early game footage or screenshots. People rip in to it without any context.

The game sounds awesome so far. It's a little underwhelming but only because so much of it had been leaked already. If this comes out this Fall for next gen systems, it will be hard for me to resist picking one up.

And these are just a handful of the concept art Bungie has. In fact they have so much concept art for this game that it numbers higher than all their previous games put together. Let me be the first to say, "wut."

Quote from Kotaku, not sure if this has been quoted but dayummm, I am buying the art book for this game

They were a first party studio then. They exist to make microsoft a profit and push systems. Their existence didnt depend on its success like the sitation for nearly all independent studios now-a-days.

This is an entirely different situation. The final budget and marketing costs alone will proubably be more than 10 times what they spent on halo.

They have to go where the money is.

Well, having read through a bunch of previews, I like what I'm reading/seeing (outside of the technical side of the graphics).

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a current gen title. The PS4 and next Xbox will probably have an install base around 10 million combined after a year and a game like this probably needs a large install base to thrive. There is supposedly going to be a new game every other year, so the next title will most likely be next gen.

This is gonna be sooo soooooooooo awesome.

Indeed.

Jeff Gerstmann laid out a scenario where you were playing on your own, or in a small group and came across a situation which required backup. The player could message someone else, and that person could load up a drop-ship with a team of friends and they would be given your co-ordinates.

Imagine the two different emotions between the two groups:

- Those on the ground holding a defensive line
- Those in the drop-ship, en route to save their comrades

It's on both sets of hardware right? Shouldn't be an issue.
