Destiny won’t release in 2013

So a Spring 2014 release seems likely? I'm fine with that. If it's Fall 2014, then I won't follow this game until next year. I hate being hyped up for that long, it's just annoying.

I think this is a smart decision. It'll give them time to polish up the game and really make sure they nail it. It sounds ambitious as hell, and they probably need all the time they can get in order to pull it off.

As a result of this, I imagine they'll do a simultaneous release across all platforms, current and next gen. That way they can capture the largest audience possible.

I'm ok with this.

To be brutally honest, those ground textures and foliage in that shot look no better from something released on the Wii. If you gave me that screenshot and told me that was a Wii game, I would have believed you 100%.

Even at such an early stage in development, the horrendous quality of that image just scares me.

It was pretty funny to hear the Bungie guys saying stuff like 'we have no limits... the only limit is our imagination and that's exciting for us' and then they cut to awful looking footage like this.

The sloppy way Bungie revealed this didn't do the game any favors imo.

Seems like a really terrible idea to launch something tied to last-gen consoles in 2014, especially if it's holiday 2014

It's like people think the 140 million 360's and PS3's will just drop off the face of the earth as soon as next gen launches. There will still be a large market for 360/PS3 games, even in spring 2014 when I imagine they plan to launch. They'll be able to get to people on both current and next gen all in one blow, which I think is a smart move.

Of course they'll be marketing the next gen versions to hell and back, but that doesn't mean the 360/PS3 player base misses out on the fun.

If they make a totally different engine/game for the next gen version then it's fine, which I suppose is possible with Activision's resources. Otherwise, it's not worth crippling the version on new consoles to try and reach the last gen market, which is already in decline a year before new systems come out, let alone a year after. Getting people on board for a new property at the beginning of a generation can be extremely lucrative(which of course Bungie took huge advantage of with the original Halo), and supposedly Bungie expects to be making these for the next 10 years. It's worthwhile to miss some sales now to make an impressive game that's not dragged down by legacy hardware

Huh? What idea?
Sessler said that going to the Bungie event was like attending a corporate kickstarter. I'm sure he was just being snarky, but that's what he said.

Not entirely unexpected, but it does further raise questions about why the decided to unveil now. Wouldn't it have been more prudent to reveal the game at E3? Using the opportunity it showcase the next generation title/s and to confirm that they are indeed the lead platforms.

Worked for the lucrative BLACK franchise.

Probably only half snark. This pre-ordering business is getting out of hand. No one in their right mind should pre-order this game. There is absolutely no good reason to do it. No game deserves to be pre-ordered this early.

But it's destiny™!

Glad to see Sessler isn't afraid to poke the Bungie bear.

All my hype is dead for this game. Why would they start pre-orders for a game a year out?

Perhaps Sessler is right and they did this to see how much support the game actually will have in order to justify to Activision the cost of development.

I still maintain that the reason they announced it so early was to get the name out there. Let a bunch of retailers/media outlets market it, make the public aware of Destiny. Everybody knows there will be another Halo game, another Call of Duty, etc., but nobody "technically" knew about Destiny until this past week.

It's a way of gaining attention for their game without revealing much. Once next gen is able to be discussed fully, I imagine they'll start talking more about those versions than anything.

But for now, again, I think it was just a way to get the name out there so people know that Destiny is coming.

Being a new franchise, Activision is probably concerned about two things: Profitability and fan reaction. Pre-order numbers are a nice easy numerical way to see what the fan base thinks of your game. Depending on how the numbers work out, they could decide to run more previews, less previews, make choices about how much cash to allocate to the launch advertising, etc.

I'm not very tech savvy and I'm wondering if it's even possible for this game to be ported to next gen consoles. It's got an online component that I'm assuming would have segregated servers by console, right?

I think the vidoc was trying to do too much, and ultimately didn't accomplish any of its goals. They wanted to formally announce their game, and give background on the fictional setting, so it had those narrated bits cut in. That should have been pulled out and build into a separate trailer.

Then the vidoc should have been about the overall project, with a couple of key messages around the design to latch onto. As is, we don't have a proper announce trailer, and we don't have context for the ambition talked about in the vidoc. It's left everyone confused and underwhelmed.

I'm excited for whatever Bungie is doing next, but this was a very muddled announcement.

My hype died for this game when I saw the in-game footage. Very generic. If you told me the game was three years away, then the footage would make sense.

It's a next-gen ready engine, I believe.

Sales take priority.

As a long time Bungie fan I'll preorder their games even 10 years out as long as it's available. They are honestly the only publisher that has never let me down when it comes to a game. I can honestly say that too. I even loved ONI which a lot thought was very mediocre to bad.

So you can call me crazy but I preordered it the second it went up on Amazon.

In one sentence, why exactly did they choose yesterday to 'reveal' the game when they had nothing to show, and so far from release
Most game reveals show a lot less. Sometimes even farther from release.

The article and source may be new but that particular slice of news is old. As Nirolak notes in the other thread, the game not being factored into Acti's FY2013 does not necessarily confirm it's not to release this year.
Also this. Though I wouldn't be surprised it ends up as a 2014 game.

I dont even fucking care anymore i just want a game that can keep occupied for 40+ hours.
Last game that did it i just discovered shame i wasn't there on release is Anno 2070 bought it last week played for 8 hours straight stupid ai things said i should look outside. Directly bought expansion pack.

So get me a universe i can spend a whole day in and you can nickle and dime me all you want. Hope Sim City 5 is the next game with a Ai bothering me to get some sunlight after 6 hour session. No cinematic bullshit just good gameplay and graphics to keep me in the world.

Bungie did this with there Halo games and i hope they can do this with Destiny.

It's better to announce it now in the lull before the storm, instead of after the PS4 reveal, when everyone would be distracted.

Yeah the lull point makes sense. I was thinking more along the lines of trying to get the word out themselves instead of avoiding the media frenzy that will unfold when the Orbis/Durango are announced along with whatever secret release titles have been in the works for them.

Either way I think they could have just done a simple teaser trailer with the artwork, narrators voice and something simple introducing everyone to the story side of things. I think if they are going to win over the the non-Halo community then they need to approach things with a little less bravado. It was bold of them to walk away from Halo, but they have seemed to walk away from every IP they have ever handled.

I hope the game does well, and graphically don't care what it looks like... game-play is key for me.

The timing of the announcement and the way it was handled was definitely strange. I don't see how it could have anything to do with the details that were part of the court case. All that stuff was public record and Bungie and Activision have sat on it for months with out comment. So why announce now? And why announce like this?

That being said the game play concepts Bungie is pushing definitely have me hyped. The way they explained they're ideas about emergent game play, making your own story (ala Eve Online or Star Wars Galaxies) and the way they're handling multi-player is what's exciting to me.

Sometimes I wonder if some posters have any reading comprehension skills at all. People seem to argue points that weren't even made in the first place. These Destiny threads have been filled with the most amazing jumps to conclusions I've seen in a long time. Combined with next-gen consoles around the corner, its been like the perfect storm.

The next few months on this forum are going to be quite interesting

Needs more time, especially so they can wait for the 720/PS4 announcement and then suddenly say "Development has moved to next-gen consoles! Time to prep those wallets!"

I think it's a mild case of entitled gamer many are having. It revealed much more than this. People saying they revealed "nothing" are absolutely fooling themselves.

It says Teaser, right in the title :p

Also, surely if you're going to hold an event you should show more. The games-media who were invited were basically tricked into losing a day of work as far as I can tell

I have doubt they will do this, so it strikes me as more than a little strange that they would announce the game now.

Why not wait until the new consoles are released at E3 and hold a presser there? That way, they could show off the next generation versions as well as showing any possible online interconnectivity that might be available between the past gen and next gen consoles.

Perhaps current gen console release will be ahead of next-gen ports? Next-gen port releases with the timing of Commet 1 DLC?

No Gameplay and no Release this year
-
why doing this event at all?

I really don't get it - Jeff Gerstmann being right about last minute changes would be the only logical explanation imo...
Or Sony is going to show something?

Anyway, 'future consoles' pretty much counts out Wii U. Hopefully Nintendo helps to get it on their platform. If not, that pushes me ever closer to a platform switch.

I expect that is the reason, gives time for the consoles to build a user-base and they can gauge interest from current generation owners too.

Still, the reveal feels awkward. The lack of any real footage, press not seeing the game, etc.
