Metal Gear Rising: Reviewgeance thread of reviews and EatChildren

Those who wrote reviews about the game being too short are using ONLY the end-game timer to judge said things.

I'm pretty annoyed that these "journalists" aren't using commonsense

PS Official Magazine UK quote from metacritic

"Sadly, the combat doesn’t have enough depth to trouble the genre’s best (it certainly can’t touch Ninja Theory’s DmC reboot), and there’s a disappointing disposability about the whole experience. "

just be glad you're you're not the only on who sucks at parrying, you found 1 review out of a dozen and still can't fathom maybe you and games radar just aren't getting it? If you're not trying to parry enemies when they're glowing orange i can't relate to your lack of skillz.

Yeah, I haven't played the final game yet, but parrying in the demo worked absolutely perfectly if you knew how to do it. I don't suppose the final game is any different in that aspect, is it?

How do you know they're only using the end-game timer? Not all those journalists are idiots. I'm sure some of them wouldn't play a game for 10 or 15 hours and think that they've only played for 3 just because of the timer at the end. With all these reviewers commenting on how short the game is, it's a pretty good bet that it actually is a short game.

Oh, well not all of them. Just some. I didn't mean to make a blanket statement.

But I guess I hit a nerve since you're one of those people who plays a game once and trades it in.

Almost every action game ever opens up on the harder difficulties. Even DmC. Most of the subtlety and the nuances of the combat and it's underlying mechanics become more apparent on harder difficulties.

From what i've seen, and from every review that makes sense, no, its not, its a deceptively sound mechanic.

On the length complaints, I'd rather know about replayability. In particular, can you skip all the dull/slow walk moments when you replay the game?
That worries me way more than length TBH.

I'm confused, what are you trying to say? Obviously a game will have much longer playtime if there is a wealth of additional content to explore, and replays are a given. But these reviewers are reporting a straight playthrough time, as they do for just about every game ever. If the game is short, then it's short.

Now, if these reviews are ignoring to mention anything else about the additional content or whatnot, then yeah, it's silly. But otherwise, I see nothing wrong here.

Edit: unless there's something I'm missing here about this timer, is it weird/misleading in some way?

I was having a problem in the demo and found it to be an old controller with stick that was drifting slightly from neutral position (not really noticable when playing games with less sensitive inputs). Aim would also drift as soon as I entered blade mode. Playing with a different controller fixed things. Definitely not a problem with the game (360 version anyway), maybe try getting a new gamepad.

You're late. The end-game timer shaves off a lot of time. Just looking at my original playthrough on Hard, it was about three hours less than what it should've been.

The game only counts your best time for each chapter - if I die eight times, the time it takes me to complete the chapter on the ninth time counts. Not the eight times prior.

I JUST edited my post as you posted this. Got it. Well, I'm sure (hopeful, actually) that most reviewers would be aware of this.

Am I the only one VERY disappointed in the game's length? Bayonetta and even Vanquish were longer games.

No it wasn't. Seems to be exactly the same as vanquish, maybe a bit longer. A lot of those reviews say 7-8 hours. Eurogamer said 9hrs. Vanquish was 5-6.

Remember Platinum said that restarts dont count towards you end game time.So if you replay a mission over 20 times, and then that 20th time you beat it in 2mins, only 2mins goes to the game clock.

I sorta felt this way when playing the demo, but once I actually figured how it works(which wasn't very obvious at first), it was easy and I was parrying like 25x a minute. Reviewers that are stating this just suck at the game and don't understand how the mechanic works. Just like I was when I played the demo at first and struggled, getting my assed kicked for the first 30mins.

MMhmm. I was ready to abandon the game after the demo, which really soured me. Glad I gave it a chance and gradually edged my way into it.

When I first bought the game a couple of days ago, I was definitely a bit cold on it. I hadn't played the demo and blind bought the game due to my love of the series. I also misunderstood the game's instructions and actually thought that I had to parry by matching the direction of the enemy's strikes to properly parry (like Punch Out). After I realized that the parry system isn't that different than something like Assassin's Creed or Arkham, everything fell into place and the game became my bitch.

P.S. If you are posting on this thread, chances are high that you are a reasonably informed, experience gamer. Play it on hard or you are doing it wrong. Since you can't simply mash, it gives you much more of an appreciation for the game's systems.

Also, judging by streams, people need to learn how to use the Auto-lock system. Makes everything better.

Can someone tell me why the 360-version has much better metascore than the PS3-version?

Cos of the reviews added to the page. For example, the 3/10 and 4/10 reviews on the PS3 page aren't on the 360 version (though one is a PS fanboy site so naturally that won't be added to the 360 page). The Destructoid review on the 360 page isn't added to the PS3 one like it should be.

Overall Metacritic is a laughably bad and poorly run site that too many people invest emotion in to.

I haven't read the 3/10 reviews, but I am really curious how they came to that conclusion. Will have to check those out tomorrow.

Being short didn't stop Vanquish from being one of the best games of the generation. It just didn't have any extraneous content. I'd rather have it that way than the same levels repeated ad nauseum.

the playstation life style review just complains about the game being too hard and states only "masochist" would love it. I believe thats the 3/10 review.

Holy shit the Playstation Lifestyle review is one of the worst things I've ever read in my life

The game revolution one is moronic too, similarly whining about how masochisticly hard it is and how there's "no dodge mechanic"

Not quite as bad as not finding the roll command for 12 hours, but it's close.
