This is still a game i never completed. i got to disc 3 and work obligations came full force. i never really returned. Now im regretting selling my CompUSA preorded copy in the GAF buy/sell/trade thread lol. Although i still own the PC triangle box version. i wonder if there are any mods for it. i stopped my PC playthrough once i found out that i might here an inferior version of the final battle music because of my audio card.

If you are playing the PSX version there are a couple mods to the game. The first is a fix to the Spirit stat bug. The second is a Hardtype version (which includes the bugfix). Makes me wish i never sold the PSX game.

There are tons of mods for the PC version. So many that it's actually hard to decide what to use.

So I just got to the big story dump about the Mako Reactor stuff and Cloud's past. Sure is a weird story.

Going to go back through this thread to read the posts. Any recommendations on guides to find those two extra characters?

Don't worry about using a guide. Really. Odds are you'll run into Yuffie by accident, and Vincent will also be on your path if you're examining everything.

My tip would be to not dismiss the enemy skill materia. Keep it equipped all the time, so even if you don't go out of your way looking for enemy skills, you'll still get some. They're pretty great in this game.

Can you explain this a bit more? I think I have enemy skill materia, do I just need to have it equipped or do I need to use it in battle?

You can learn some unique attacks with the Enemy Skill materia. If an enemy uses said attack against you while you have Enemy Skill equipped, you'll learn it.

They go from useless to overpowered.

Would like to play this again, but I got the sales dates mixed up and missed out on the 50% off sale on PSN. One of my favorite JRPGs.

I'm also playing FFVII for the first time. Well, playing it properly for the first time, I played it a bit when it first came out but never got off the first disc.

I just got onto the second disc and I'm absolutely loving it so far. I'm swapping my save back and forth between the PS3 and Vita and this way I've been able to sink loads of hours into the game really quickly.

I'm trying not to use a guide for anything but I've already given in and used a guide three times, once to get Yuffie, once to get Vincent and once to find out where the hell the temple of the ancients was lol.

I REALLY wish I had started the NTSC version and not the PAL version, tbh it's been so long I had forgotten all about the 50hz horrors but I'm just too far in to turn back now.

Also one of my fave little things is the ability to set the top-left corner of the touch-screen to be the O button so it doesn't matter which hand I'm holding my Vita with I can still advance text bubbles.

I played it as a kid when it first came out and loved it to the point of 100% completion, went back and played it again 4 years ago and holy fucking shit it's one of the worst rpgs I have ever played as far as story goes. What a convoluted mess of dumbshit. Even worst half the people that say it's their favorite can't even get parts about the story right.

Music and materia system are both cool though. Sephiroth is a fucking garbage ass villain though.
*not even the real villain really so I guess it doesn't matter much*

On a rating scale grading it as a game today I give it like a 6 or so at best. Anyone that says such and such is the best game of all time then says you had to have played it when it came out COMPLETELY shits on their own statement of best game of all time.

ive always kind of wondered if the mess of a story is from translation issues. i guess i had assumed not really because no serious effort to retranslate has ever taken hold to my knowledge.

To those who are fluent in both Japanese and English.. how is the English translation?

I'm not fluent in both, but most of the translation stuff is bad grammar at most from what I've read up on it. Even more confusing is the newer ff7 related things and the retconing and such they have done there. A lot of the main plot elements for FF7 are hidden around the game and not really shoved in your face.

OK I am on my way to the harbon looking for Sep. Do I need to start looking for those two extra party members yet?

Still enjoying the game at the 9 hour mark. I have to try and take a picture of the FF VII running on the Vita...It looks so fucking good.

And I've never gotten this talk about FF7 aging badly. The art direction and overall atmosphere make the game timeless despite the polygons.

About a year ago I decided to replay FF7. I had just replayed FF6 and Chrono Trigger and my first thought was that, graphically, it probably wouldn't hold up as well as those two because of the low-poly character models. To my surprise, the graphics actually held up really well. Obviously those character models did look terrible close up, but Square seemed to have the good sense to keep the camera reasonably zoomed out most of the time and the backgrounds look great. Actually I thought the overall package held up pretty well over time. Were there flaws? Yes. Is the game in many ways overrated? Yes. Is it still fun to play? Absolutely, and in the end, that's what really matters.

One of the most memorable rpgs for me. The atmosphere of going through midgar for the first time for me is still unsurpassed. Combined that with the OST and it was definitely an experience I wish I could go through as if it was my first time ever again.

You can already get Yuffie (do it) but Vincent will be available later.

Man, you are almost making me buy a Vita just to play FFVII again. And regarding Enemy Skill, two words, Big Guard. That is all.

I remember when I played FF7.
It was a few years ago. Not much was out that I wanted to buy at the time so I hooked up my PS1 and popped in my dads old copy of FF7 that he had given to me.

I've always been interested in playing it. Especially with all the talk around it and having played some of FF9. Needless to say I got addicted pretty quick. Had so much fun playing the game and going through the story. Even went out if my way with chicobo racing for knights of the round. I know some consider it cliche to say FF7 is your favorite jrpg. But there's good reason why so many people say so. You know a games great when you can play it well after its release and still be absorbed by it all.

I don't know if I'd say it's my fav RPG, but it's got a real flair for drama and the progression balance is perfect. It's definitely my favorite FF.

Every time I think of that game it's just bam - right in the childhood.

I actually bought the Japanese version first (98 bucks; COD) and played through half of the 2nd disc (paper clip trick FTW!) and then I got the US version and played through the whole thing. Played through it again on PSP a couple of years ago. Never gets old.

Remake on PS4 or I start punching babies.

I just played nothing but FFVII for the past few days and then went onto the PSN store and omg my brain could not unflip X and O back again. I lost track of how many items I accidentally added to my cart when I was actually trying to exit a menu instead.

I finished this earlier today and boy, it definitely lived up to its reputation. While some things are very archaic today, or downright bad (pretty much any section that involved different gameplay: motorcycle riding, snowboarding, the submarine -god, that was BAD-), I understand how incredible it all must have been 16 years ago and that made it better. The story was good, the characters were likable and I wow'ed a few times at the ending and the epilogue. Very good game, will probably replay in the future.

Now onto VIII and IX.

Remake will be on 3DS with "chibi" character models/stumps.

I remember doing this but having it fuck me over later in the game.

iirc, certain minigames and menus didn't even recognize my altered control configuration. Like there was a conflict in what button presses were being recognized or something.

So I ended up just going back to default :/

Anyone else play up to the Gold Saucer section without a memory card? I couldn't find one but wanted to play anyway...got up to that sections TWICE without one.

Std RPG story? Did we play the same game? I found the first 75% enthralling. The rest psychedelic. Not in a good way. Like the writers went on an acid trip.

Worked fine for me throughout the entire game

He probably means that even though X and O are flipped in the options they aren't flipped on-screen during the sections that prompt for presses and it stuffs him up. It'd stuff me up.

Kinda OT I was searching Spotify for the FFVI soundtrack and I found this gem:

Mako Reactor by Mega Ran:

I don't usually like rap but I'm loving the lyrics and music in this tune.

Update time:

Been putting in 30 minutes here and there this week. About 12 hours in and I am surprised I am still on the first disc. So far so good. Thankfully I haven't hit anything that would cause me to grind.

I just participated in my first Chocobo race and I am now free to continue my travels.

I am starting to enjoy the music more with the great piece featured in the desert prison thing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYKgfhOuqQA

I love when two things you don't normally think would mix... mix. And mix well.

words can't describe how much i love this game.

the only thing wrong with it, is that when near the end of the game only materia matters and the characters are irrelevant to combat, meaning only the limit breaks are what stand out and therefore decide who you place in your party.

if ffvii were remade with some sort of class system defining each character, that would be perfect.

everything else is flawless, art direction, story, and my god THAT music.

The music really gets into your head. If I had listened to this game when it came out, man. As it is, it's still pretty memorable.

I'm probably the o ly person who enjoyed FFIX more than FFVII. In fact, I enjoyed Chrono Cross and Xenogears more too!

city of the ancients, jenova, and cosmo canyon themes in particular are ridiculously memorable.

"Main Theme of Final Fantasy VII" is my favorite overworld theme of all time.
So fucking epic, so dramatic, so sweeping. Just incredible.

It's made even more powerful by the context of hearing it for the first time once you finally escaped Midgar. One of the greatest moments in all of gaming.

The soundtrack to VII is still my favourite in the franchise. There's a deep melancholy permeating it and it's applied perfectly in-game.

It's so great when you realise that you're really just at the beginning of the game once you walk outside Midgar. Such a wtf feeling.

At the time, it was unheard of to think that the first time you would see the world map in an RPG was ~7 hours in. Pretty risky move, but they executed it so well.
