Indie Games [March] Now Voting - Post 774!

Yeah, my main gripe is with the text! It might just be my resolution, but it was kinda tough to read. A long way to go, but one of those quiet ruminative little games.

On 1600*900 it was pretty fine to read, but thats something you might want to report to their forum if they havent included a scalable UI and font yet.

Interesting game:

Spate
Pd3WF44.png

http://spategame.com/spate/game-info/
Spate is a platformer. But it as much Mario as it is Dear Esther. Three things that I believe make Spate a unique platforming experience are its atmosphere, its drinking mechanic, and its art.

Release – 3rd Quarter 2013

Not sure, but the 25$ preorder might give you access to the Beta now.

Kyoto - Free (PC)

Spiral into audioreactive obscurity as you are transported to a mysterious and melancholy land. Kyoto is an interactive ambient musical experiment that serves is an homage to the wonderful city that the dev currently resides in. This short and sweet game serves as half audioreactive experiment and half tech sandbox.

Definitely check it out guys if you like these games, this thing is veeeeeery pretty. Not much of a game, as seen in the description above, more of an artsy "experience" game. Very nice.

Already a bit older, so no OP, but Red Rogue is a pretty darn fun Sidescrolling roguelike with more depth than it seems at first:

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
That looks actually surprisingly interesting. People should watch the trailer. Please by all means, let us know in this thread when this game releases.

Yeah, we'll probably talk about a concrete release date as we get closer to wrapping up the localization. We're still working on setting a release date for La Mulana!

Platformines - Free Demo/Full Version not released yet (PC)
Platformines01.jpg

Platformines by Magiko Gaming is a procedurally generated side-scrolling platformer/shooter/RPG/action game with some minor metroidvania elements. You'll explore a massive underground environment while discovering tons of new and unique weapons and uncovering the map. There seems to be a ton of things to it, like a never ending amount of different weapon configurations.

That was already a bit older, right? Gave it my greenlight vote.

Never actually tried it though. Should probably remedy that.

You should, it's amazing when you get the feel of it - of course there's a demo to try it out.
And yeah, it's not new, but still waiting for Steam approval, so I think it belongs here as well.

I just played Césure and apart from beautiful visuals there's nothing to it. Usually I love Notgames but this just feels empty and pointless.

I certainly know what you mean, but I got the impression that this emptiness was the point of it and actually made me feel a bit oppressed, especially in relation to my size and the oppressing nature of the color and sounds. Although to be fair, the game really seems to be more a tech demo/environmental showcase more than anything else and I can definitely see how it would probably alienate most people. Besides, I think its easier to get into "good looking" art experiences, rather than the oppressing ones.

Although I also lately thought about those artful games and how they might not appeal to everyone. I mean even the people who usually like these games (like you and I) might have issues with finding the spark among the more obscure games. For example I bought Proteus on release and I still wasnt able to appreciate it as much as most other people seem to be. That makes me a bit sad, but I guess some "artful" experiences just arent for me.

But that talk just made me think, I'd love to dig up a few art games and would love to see whether people react more strongly in favor of nice ones instead of the "oppressing" ones, even though their aim, evoking emotions, is basically the same.

Random aside: Try Kyoto. That is a very gorgeous art game.

Wow, I'd forgotten about this one. Thanks!

There are many, many great older titles that people should check out. I was just glancing over my Desura game list and thought I should put a post here about some of them. Too bad not too many read the thread atm.

Oh yeah for sure, I know I am way behind on my indie title playthroughs. Even though I'm playing far less AAA stuff nowadays I still have nowhere near the time to play all of the unique titles that come out. Stuff that I enjoyed the demo of and intended to keep up with (like Fotonica above) end up getting lost easily. I'm sure there's hundreds of games I've unfortunately left behind. I'm really glad you decided to make this OT and maintain it, it should help me keep up with releases a little better to have a place to pop into on GAF now and again.

Pretty cool, older (2003) MP game called Bontago:

Its about stacking differently formed blocks to reach a goal faster. Looked pretty fun in the video:

Huh, didn't think I'd see this game again. I remember being blown away by the physics when I first played it... I think it was one of the first heavily physics-based games I played (being pre-Half Life 2). I wonder how it holds up.

It is not oppressing and empty enough to make any statement, but I really like the idea of a game that is not fun to play, instead makes you want to turn it off instantly, equivalent of noise music - it could be interesting. I don't want to diss it, because it was probably not meant to be read too deeply in to it, but if you try to do interactive art you sould at least make it a little bit interactive and this one doesn't seem to be anything more than some tech demo.

I tried Kyoto - nice little experience - but what I find really interesting is Gorogoa. It reminds me a bit of Mike Figgis Timecode - not the simultaneous aspect, but how different realities connect with each other. Thanks for recommendation - it's worth checking out guys.

Yeah, definitely. Gorogoa is probably my biggest takeaway from this thread so far. Cant wait for the proper release.

On another note, holy fucking christ, Space Engine is fucking amazing:

You can fly to every single star you see in the background. I just had my gf pointing at one visible from the earth and flew there. So amazing.

Downloading, can't wait to check it out.

I had a bit of a trouble to find nice looking stars myself because most randomly generated stars in the universe (surprise) arent that exciting. Took me a while to get used to the controls too, there is an option to turn off the HUD, but I forgot where. Also, the mousewheel is your best friend to raise the speed you are moving at.

Oh and check the F key functions. One of them shows a universe overview, and another one has points of interest bookmarked (like a blackhole and several known planets).

Oh yeah, and here are 10GB of high resolution textures for the planets in our own solar system:

Trying to think of an art game I actually hated, but not coming to mind right now. The artiest game I have played yet has been Tale of Tales' most recent game Bientot l'ete.
jJLZNVYvBduKy.jpg

Giant Bomb even did a quick look. Took me 5-6 hours. Abstract as all fuck. While I didn't get much out of it emotionally compared to The Path, figuring out what went wrong in the relationship in this holodeck beach setting and trying to figure out the gameplay loop in itself was intriguing. The "poetry of the waves" effect is really unique.

Mix Facade, Solaris, and French new wave (even though I've never seen one of those movies) and you can get sort of an idea what it's going for. There's a last item you collect, and it does have an "ending", that might put perspective as to what happened to match up the abstract clues.

If nothing else, the visuals will give you something to gawk over.

I love their previous works, especially Fatale - the ending performance is simply beautiful, so I'm definitely going to buy this one.

Yeah, there's something for everyone.

As for weird shit Kairo looks interesting as well. Haven't tried it yet. It has some Myst/Witness kind of feel.

I recently started wondering why I'm spending large amounts of money to get new games on day 1. The list of games already out that I want to play would last me until I die.

As it turns out, I can have games forever from these threads alone. There's so much interesting looking stuff here, and this thread just says "march" which means that there could potentially be several threads as packed as this.

Man PC is awesome.

I've got Kairo on my Desura, played it a bit although I couldn't find much interactive nature in the world and lost interest reasonably quickly. I should go back to it sometime though, especially since it generally gets good reviews when I read them. The game had this odd slightly horror element to it, the pace has these long lulls and then sudden movement in a jump scare like fashion which meant that although it isn't a horror game in any of the conventional methods, it did leave me feeling the same as I had after playing games like Silent Hill or whatever.

Yeah, thats sort of the point I am trying to get across with this thread. Its not necessarily the only type of games to play on PC, but the sheer variety and endless releases of Indie Games provide such a huge pool that I feel like people outright dismissing them in favor of big budget titles is a damn shame.

Btw, I sort of expect the march thread to be the biggest on content, because I am still including games from 2012 to the OP (since there wasnt any bigger thread last year that was actually taking care of Indie Games). Naturally, since i was doing some research, the thread series is a bit frontloaded now, and I wont find 50 games to put in the thread for april within a week, but who knows!

Besides, all 2012 releases that havent been put in the OP yet, might turn up in the subsequent threads. These threads are definitely meant for Gaf, so that no game should pop up more than once (usually) if you look through the threads at the end of the year. But I dont think we'll run out of games too soon either, there are still like 25 games I posted (like the Kairo one just being posted) that could potentially be great, but no one in this thread has played yet.

Thirty Flights of Loving - $4.99 on Steam

My comment from the Games of the year thread:

This one took me by surprise. The most interesting element of the game is jump cuting technique used in movies, but entirely in gameplay. I haven't seen anything like this in a 3d game before, maybe because of some technical difficulties involved, but I think it's well worth exploring, because all those cuts - just a small feature - make the experience really fresh and dynamic.

It's pretty short, took me about 15 minutes, but when it goes on sale you should definitely check it out.

Molto Vivace - Free. Dynamically generated musical game with visuals heavy inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. It's quite simple, but the beauty of it wouldn't let me stop playing it.

https://www.digipen.edu/?id=1170&proj=26185

A Slower Speed of Light - Free. Game designed by MIT students. http://gamelab.mit.edu/games/a-slower-speed-of-light/.

A Slower Speed of Light is a first-person game prototype in which players navigate a 3D space while picking up orbs that reduce the speed of light in increments. Custom-built, open-source relativistic graphics code allows the speed of light in the game to approach the player’s own maximum walking speed. Visual effects of special relativity gradually become apparent to the player, increasing the challenge of gameplay. These effects, rendered in realtime to vertex accuracy, include the Doppler effect (red- and blue-shifting of visible light, and the shifting of infrared and ultraviolet light into the visible spectrum); the searchlight effect (increased brightness in the direction of travel); time dilation (differences in the perceived passage of time from the player and the outside world); Lorentz transformation (warping of space at near-light speeds); and the runtime effect (the ability to see objects as they were in the past, due to the travel time of light). Players can choose to share their mastery and experience of the game through Twitter. A Slower Speed of Light combines accessible gameplay and a fantasy setting with theoretical and computational physics research to deliver an engaging and pedagogically rich experience.

Whoah! This made my head hurt. Creating the beams of light on the mirror moon and then seeing them right in front of you is really cool. I found all the Pillars, and figured out what locking does. Is there anything else in terms of goals?

Oh right, game jam game. Any plans for a full game? This could be an amazing puzzle game.

Kyoto

It's a cute tech demo that you would see for a new console, or can be used as a meditative musical exercise. The aurora borealis stuff reminded me of Proteus. Is it going to be something more like having puzzles in Auditorium? Or just end up as a 15 minute experiment? The website seems to imply the latter.

Didn't like that I couldn't go full screen or maybe I missed something.

Can we talk about Starseed Pilgrim? I bought this game about a week ago and I'm really interested in it, it's getting a lot of praise. But I'm just not exactly sure what it is I'm supposed to be doing. I get the mechanics, though it is weird how some of the seeds don't behave all the same. I just don't know what to do with them.

I wouldn't buy it, barely worth the experience I had with it and it's fairly meaningless to play without an online partner (of which there hasn't been the several times I tried to play) because the AI is horrible at conversation. Stay far away.

I get it now, but ugh, really about the negative space thing? If you try to jump onto a platform that you can't see, instead of the camera scrolling down, it just kills you.

Yeah, you just need to prepare the level in a way that you have "pockets" on the side of the negative space level. Its not all that difficult once you got the hang of it. Sometimes the random nature of the seed growing will still screw you though, but since the game doesnt really "punish" you for it, I didnt really mind.

The games from the current IndieRoyale bundle are all very recent:

Indie Royale Debut Bundle is up.

Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller
McDROID
Master of Alchemy - Rise of the Mechanologists
CloudPhobia
Wimp: Who Stole My Pants?
6180 the moon

As you probably could tell by the bundle name, there's no Steam keys this time. Most of them is on Greenlight though, so don't forget to vote on your favorites.

I'll definitely pick it up, anyone else having an opinion on these games? They are all rather highly rated on Desura too, 8.8 to 9.5.

Stardew Valley looks like the 2D Harvest Moon for PC I've always wished existed.

Elements of Minecraft and 4 player co-op too.

No idea how close it is to release...

Oh yeah, looking forward to that too.

Btw, does anyone know why the thread got renamed?

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
What was the old name? I didn't notice a change.

Indie Games |OT| March, and I mean seriously. A mod could at least throw a message in here to say why it has been changed. Not telling anyone why, and changing it to "something" without asking the thread creator whether he'd like the title instead of asking the thread creator for another suggestion is kind of rude. Besides I dont get why this does not qualify as "OT" if even vague concepts like Fitness or whatever can get "OT"s.

Oh and forgot to mention earlier, but I think I saw a release period for that Harvest Moon game. "Summer 2013" or something? I'll try to dig it up again.
