John Walker's anti-BS SimCity news articles.

Seems like John Walker also called out MCV a few months ago regarding Hitman: Absolution. Which would explain why Ben Parfitt has a stick up his ass.

Wait, did this dude complain about nudity in God of War and he has those fucking paintings on the wall? I don't what his GoW rant was but I assume it is related to that given the picture you posted.

You betcha. Here's the wall he's facing. The picture on the right appears to me, to be a woman in stockings with no pants on, legs spread on a bed. It is certainly surprising this dude is so offended by GoW's depiction of women.

Here it is from another angle.

At that point in the video he says "People won't always agree with you but they need to always believe that you mean exactly what you're saying. It's important that people believe that you believe what you say." Even more important than believing what you say is true?

I stopped listening a long time ago due to Arthor. And it is a shame too because I quite like Anthony and Matt.

You know something? Turns out I've quit Rebel FM. I never made a conscious decision to do so. I even have several recent episodes downloaded. But when looking through podcasts, I can never bring myself to listen for some reason. Thinking about it now, it's Arthur. Even before all this madness, I found myself disliking Arthur on the podcast more and more. Didn't start out that way. The best way to describe it is this feeling of douche chills with how he presents himself, perhaps combined with sampling some of his written reviews which left me supremely unimpressed with how mediocre they are.

So thanks to this episode, I can now confirm what my sub-conscious had done and unsubscribe to the podcast. I'll miss Anthony, but I still can still catch him on The Comedy Button.

That is how it started for me as well. You have now come full circle.

I could barely get through the Jeff Green/Shawn Elliott episode a while back, and I'd take a bullet for the GFW guys.

@akwinters i'm not going to speak to whether that works, or is fun, or if it fucked somebody's mom.
Seriously?

Then why say anything in the first place, especially with this consistently cunty and unreasonable attitude?

You have these high-profile, public platforms at your fingertips with countless opportunies to keep your audience informed and all you do is squander and cockblock?

That's exactly what happened to me. Gies annoyed me so much that I just happened to quit Rebel FM without even realizing I did until months latter. Anthony is still one of my favorites because of how genuine all his opinions seem to be and how unbiased he seems to be between AAA/indie, handheld/console/pc, exclusive/nonexclusive, and other things like that, so I continue to hope for the day that those two stop podcasting together.

Gies is also the same guy to adamantly defend the practice of taking reviewers out on lavish review events, under the pretense that he's certainly not effected by such things, without ever questioning why a company would want to pay so much money on him if that were honestly the case. That was the evidence that I needed to confirm my personal dislike of him.

I just unsubbed from RebelFM as well and also left a 1 star rating on iTunes. I realized that I dreaded listening to the podcast except for when Anthony was talking.

The GoW Ascension rant was such a ridiculous over-reaction, and it was coming from this guy...

I'm not really sure what his Ascension "rant" was (maybe it was a Twitter thing that I missed), but implying that being disturbed by having to beat a female character to death and having "artsy" paintings of naked figures in your house is somehow contradictory is laughable. I'm fairly sure those are his own paintings, also.

I was about to write something in the lines that maybe we should drop the focus on Arthur Gies and focus more on Maxis, but damn he's stupid.

1. He starts this whole thing by calling out those who believe Simcity could be done offline in a very condescending way.
2. Then he refuses to backtrack when he clearly himself doesn't get the issue, and doesn't really understand what's been found out about Simcity
3. And he also refuses to let the discussion die out, by continue to argue with people.
4. And then he tries to play a martyr, when he himself brought this on his own, still not acknowledging the actual issue (it's not whether or not Maxis are allowed to do an online game, but about the appareant about that it can't be done offline).
5. And then he also admits that he doesn't even play the game.

He just showing that he, for whatever reason (pride, stubborness, stupidity), must defend his initial post. And while that is common and a bit understandable for regular Joe posting on internet forums and comment fields, that really isn't the behaviour I like to see in people who calls themselves journalists.

I gotta wonder

Activision has been relatively low on the radar, compared to how bad they were around their various controversies (Infinity Ward, Brutal Legend, Kotick in general). Could it be that it was all an elaborate ruse to somehow get EA to emulate their bad behaviour, and then, once it sticks, shut their mouth, thereby leading to everyone hating EA again?

Activision are actually pretty decent at avoiding catastrophes like this. In some ways they are quite sensibly run.

He's always come off as an elitist asshole to me, especially on his podcast. Seems in most of the RebelFM episodes he goes out of his way to correct people, and tries to persuade other members of the podcast to see things from his point of view.

This guy won't get a community manager spot because he's proven himself so inept at managing the community.

But he isnt a community manager yet, he is showing his willingness to take the publishers side, no matter the circumstances. EA seems to think that is a good thing, by all indications from their PR.

Judging from the poor execution of those paintings, I'd assume that they are his work. I was listening to Rebel FM when it was new and remember him saying he was an art major.

the moral of this story is: seriously don't buy hyped and initially well reviewed EA games in March, this has happened like three years in a row now

The moral of this story is never preorder anything, especially if it relies on the internet.

Don't give them your money until you're absolutely sure it works and is good.

Its hard when they hold some of my favorite series hostage. But you're right. This was definitely a learning experience for me.

Ya, that is the struggle with me, they have some titles I enjoy, but I dont like giving into their business model. Instead of completely writing off all their games, I wait now, for awhile, before buying anything the publisher, to make sure I'm not getting had.

Or don't buy EA games ever. They need to be bled dry and die out since they're never going to stop these awful tactics.

Which is funny because he's wrong all the time, but the other people on Rebel FM have neither the balls nor the knowledge to correct his ignorant assumptions and dishonest accusations (e.g. the purely fictitious God Hand conspiracy).

But put him up against someone like John Walker who is actually informed on the subject, you know, because he did some actual games journalism, and the outcome was as predictable as it was one-sided.

I've approved his account and tweeted at his ass.
Awesome!

EA wants to say “sooorweeeee”. For pretending the game had to be online for server computations, and then ignoring us when we pointed out this wasn’t the case? No, not because of that! But for launching SimCity in the most extraordinarily inept fashion, with barely functioning servers, massive queues, frequent crashes, and the rest of the mess everyone in the whole world except EA and that one reviews editor predicted would happen.
HAHAHA

Hello you ridiculously lovely people.

I wanted to step in (I wanted to do so on Saturday night too, but you live in a walled garden with the intercom unplugged) and say a big thank you.

In any job where you say your opinions of things in a manner which suggests you think others might agree, there's a lot of hostility in response. So while I'm very blessed to receive some lovely emails
here and there, the overall balance does tend to weigh on the side of hate. Hearing that there was a thread about my coverage in here made me think, "Uh oh."

But what an amazing surprise! The very kind things people have said have meant a lot to me, and I'm incredibly pleased that my grumbling has proved at least cathartic for others.

However, I'm quite sure that all the mean things you've said about Gies means if he's at GDC, he's going to snap my neck. The man's a tank. So at least you made me smile before you got me killed.

Oh, and what Htown said right near the start is absolutely true. It IS awful that my SimCity posts should be considered anything particularly unusual. Let's hope such things stand out less and less in the future.

Cheers people - it's much appreciated.

Hopefully others realize there is a market for your type of perspective. Thanks for what all of you do at RPS, hope you can keep it up and retain your existence.
