John Walker's anti-BS SimCity news articles.

I don't get why EAgies is taking a stand against what he thinks is a vocal minority raging against a business model. Why does he feel responsible for defending a company's business practices? If it's a small group of people, why bother engaging them so doggedly? If it's a large group of people, maybe it's worth seeing things from their point of view.

Because his narrative, going by his twitter, is that he knows more then you or me(or anyone not him).

Editorial: Let’s Not Pre-Order Games Any More, Eh?

Also, I need a bumper sticker that says "I was reading RPS before it became hip". Nice to see the site get some well-deserved wider attention.

I'm torn on that issue, while I agree with him in general aren't there some benefits to us pre-ordering?
I assume the system gives publishers an indication of the demand for a game which in theory should limit stock shortages but as we saw with Ni no Kuni they can still happen.

Plus those trinkets and exclusive DLC are also some of the most gamer-friendly anti-piracy measures as it's more carrot than stick.

Like I said in another thread:

Ya, I'll admit, I do it too, but honestly? I have found myself purposely not doing it though, the more and more "aware" I have got from what the practice does in the long term. I will, however, pre-order something just to support the idea(like X-COM) where even if the game isnt that great, I want to give the appearance of a large demand for that type of genre or game. But anymore, I wait a day or so to here what everyone else has to say(community and games media alike).

Also, if they are offering, like, $20 off for a game I was already interested in, just for pre-ordering then for sure(because the risk was lowered). However as a whole, I think the better choice would be to hold off.

If I had to guess its because it didn't affect him other than in a detached, semiprofessional way, and he's incapable of empathizing with his audience.

Hello you ridiculously lovely people.

I wanted to step in (I wanted to do so on Saturday night too, but you live in a walled garden with the intercom unplugged) and say a big thank you.

In any job where you say your opinions of things in a manner which suggests you think others might agree, there's a lot of hostility in response. So while I'm very blessed to receive some lovely emails
here and there, the overall balance does tend to weigh on the side of hate. Hearing that there was a thread about my coverage in here made me think, "Uh oh."

But what an amazing surprise! The very kind things people have said have meant a lot to me, and I'm incredibly pleased that my grumbling has proved at least cathartic for others.

However, I'm quite sure that all the mean things you've said about Gies means if he's at GDC, he's going to snap my neck. The man's a tank. So at least you made me smile before you got me killed.

Oh, and what Htown said right near the start is absolutely true. It IS awful that my SimCity posts should be considered anything particularly unusual. Let's hope such things stand out less and less in the future.

Cheers people - it's much appreciated.

John W

Thank you and please...SURVIVE!

The industry needs more people like you!

I've had a general "no preordering" policy for a couple years now. I've had few regrets and saved a few hundred bucks. The exceptions to the policy have been games that are already well known and where per-ordering is necessary for one reason or another: US edition of Xenoblade is the chief example.

Yeah, there's something wrong with some PHP somewhere in Wordpress. Our finest codehounds are on it.

First time I've noticed RPS on GAF. I don't make slobbery fanboy comments about videogame personalities very often but you guys are pretty awesome.

Just wanted to quote and say welcome to the forum. Have to say my opinion of the gaming press has hit an all-time low, RPS excepting. Thanks for doing your job in an industry evidently dominated by people who don't.

Off topic for this thread at least, but earlier today you guys said you had an interview with Mitsoda coming later on. Any idea when? I'm really looking forward to pretty much any new dead state info that I can get my eyes on at this point. I'm seriously desperate.

Yes, that's his account.

Somewhat baffled that Gies actually took Walker's comment about a physical threat seriously.

His fans don't read the whole story, that's why Twitter is a great medium for news. You can throw up headlines and most of the time you can get away with misinformation because few people will investigate the content. For a lot of people, he'll look like a victim of abuse, which may be true in some capacity but he did attract it in the first place.

Added RPS to my bookmarks toolbar next to GAF and PC gamer (the only sites I visit). Regarding the pre order article, I get what they're saying but if I get a nice bonus like BS1 and XCOM for free, I won't pass on that.

Will go back to interning under you fine, fine seniors for now.

I'm just busting your balls, relax.

Same along with art-books or a title I really want because the demo impressed me (Metal Gear Raiden).

Now a days though I generally try to wait for sales.

What is your steam id? I don't think I have you on my list.

Its just so embarassing seeing "professionals" make tits of themselves on twitter like that. Surely people like Gies should be aware of how these things work? Though to be honest I dont think anyone every really comes out of a twitter argument as a winner, perhaps its a consequence of the medium but it no matter who's invovled it always looks a little juvenile. Compilation imgaes of twitter arguments between gaming professionals have the same kind of feel as a column in Hello or OK.

Yeah, I didn't expect him to be so completely humourless.

I'm sure he has a great sense of humor... Just he probably isn't very self deprecating, in a humor kind of way. He probably isnt used to making mistakes like the rest of us, so doubling down is a thing.

most preorders are really bad deals and consist of publishers trying to fool you with marketing and trinkets

that is why it was extremely refreshing with the Arma 3 Alpha/preorder deal where what you essentially got for preordering was a really good price

preordering is a risk for the consumer and the publisher should take that in consideration when setting the price instead of taking advantage of consumers simple mindedness and putting marketing money (loads of markeing money, adding to the cost of the game) on trying to get the gamestop pleb to preorder at above full price

When this whole thing with Sim City calms down it'll be interesting to look at how and when Arthur Gies became Gaf's public enemy #1. Personally I've always had respect for the guy :lol

Yes! People need to stop pre-ordering stuff. At least the way when they actually have to put money down so they are most likely to buy it.

I am pretty sure people hated him ever since the RebelFM donation debacle.

He's always been extremely polarising because he frequently says shit that have close to no foundation and talks over people on podcasts. All the while, trying to paint himself as someone with insider knowledge. The OP, I believe, highlights this attitude. If not, look at him getting wrecked over new console rumours. Despite having "insider knowledge", he was dead wrong about the PS4 and is looking more and more likely to be wrong about the Xbox 720's secret sauce.

After being thrashed over his defence of SimCity's online DRM/multiplayer, he gave this comment on Twitter:
@mossmouth @lordsleepyhead personally, i don't have an opinion on the design, because i haven't played it.

If you haven't even played it, how the fuck do you know how the online multiplayer/region system works? That tweet might actually explain some of his brain-dead comments about other games.

What happened?

Apparently:
Arthur met Anthony (Chufmoney from GFW podcast) from a previous job. It was Tower Records I think, and they became roommates. Anthony worked his way up at 1up and finally got placed on the 1up/GFW podcast from what seems Shawn Elliot liking him and getting him on. Arthur wasn't working in the game press at this time.

When 1up exploded in January 2009, Nick Suttner, Phillop Kholer, and Anthony formed RebelFM the same week. Arthur kind of lucked out here because he was Anthony's roommate, so he got on this podcast that had a ton of interest in it at first because of the 1up layoffs. It also had alot of listeners. I believe it was even number 1 on overall itunes podcasts, a huge feat for a gaming podcast. They also raked in the money. They accepted donations as the "ex-1uppers" who were mistreated and laid off, and made at least 10k, probably much more.

Essentially people donated towards a podcast and Arthur used some of that money to buy a laptop, since he had no money at the time to buy a system that would allow him to talk about games. Never heard about it, I don't listen or care about RebelFM so I don't know how true it is.

I'm sure someone will explain the situation better with some actual sources.

That sounds pretty shitty if true.

I'm still a console peasant. :( I'm waiting to see what the Steambox does in terms of paradigm shifting the PC model from a "rat race" in terms of standard hardware specs or not before I jump onto a PC.

Arthur Gies just shot himself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Journalism culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is on GameFaqs where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over on NeoGAF, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the GAF public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Sim City for either system, nor will they read any of Polygon's articles. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Arthur has alienated an entire market with this move.

Arthur, publicly apologize and quit working for Polygon or you can kiss your business goodbye.

John Walker is awesome. The industry needs more outspoken people.

GFW Radio & Idle Thumbs crews, Gabe, Carmack, Blow.

This is the kind of stuff that keeps me from quitting gaming.

I think you are exaggerating things a tiny weeny bit too much here

or irony?

It's weird how Walker doesn't constantly bemoan being abused and insulted on Twitter. I guess all of the Tweets and e-mails he's received lately have begun with "Sir, I must politely take issue with regard to your position.." or maybe he's got some crazy superpower ability to separate idiotic comments from legitimate criticism.
