VGLeaks: First look as Durango XDK (always connected, kinect required, must install)

After you installed the game you could use the disc to play with your dog because it will be useless.

And when you need too upgrade the HDD after 10-20 game installs, and need to reinstall you buy the game again? Don't play with your dog with the disc ;P ;P

Always on, always connected. Always watching you and sending consumer data to Microsoft so that they can tailor products and services to your specific profile. Excuse me, Department of Justice, your warrant is valid. Here's what was recorded in GAF's living room on March 20th at 4:22 PM. I'm sorry, we must pause this newly released movie you were watching because Kinect thinks your dog is another person who just walked into the room and now we have to charge you an extra 2 dollars.

This is going to backfire.

Yeah read it again and made more sense, isn't this technically blocking used games?

Certainly while it's in use. There could be an option to de-register the game from your system and have the disc work again, no technical reason why not.
But if you want the ability to play any game without swapping discs, you need a way of making the discs useless while installed.

I wonder if you can play the game from your HDD after installing from the disk. The hard copy could basically be your archive copy in case you delete the install to make space but you wouldn't have to worry about download time on a 50Gb game.

Well, this sounds just like I had expected: Everything has gone wrong. Also confirms no used/backwards compatibility(? Can't play from disc drive, right? It probably has to authorize a game install), which is nice.

Damn it, Microsoft.

All of this is referring to a low power/sleep state in which it can still process and connect to the xbl servers. It doesn't say that if its not connected to the internet it will not function.

This whole line is about convenience, so you when you power on there is minimal start up and no updates.

That's a very positive vision of it. But I'm pretty sure it means we'll have to connect online before we can even play and from there we can imagine the worst.

There will need to some sort of verification process for that to happen.

Like I said, if this is optional functionality, then it's perfectly fine.
I'm just not so sure it will remain in the realm of pure customer convenience...

After seeing how much MS has invested in making xbox a household brand there is no way they are going to fuck it all up by having always on-line, no used games and always kinect.
They can't be that stupid. I'm waiting for E3.

I still see it as people putting together leaked info (these specs) and rumours (No used games) and assuming an always on connection or no playing directly from discs means blocking used games.

I just cant see them releasing a console that needs an internet connection to play games. Its ridiculous even in 2013 and they'd be cutting out a huge chunk of their market especially if they are selling this at a more family friendly price than the PS4.

Wait and see :(

Always online, required to use Kinect or at least pay for one... why MS, why.

The other stuff doesn't sound bad though.

I actually like the idea of installing games while you play from disk. Installations will help with load times considerably and you won't have to worry about deleting them and waiting forever to install them again. As long as they let users manage it properly it's probably what I'd be doing any way if disk installs are allowed on everything. Really weird that disk streaming isn't even supported though. It seems like that's definitely hinting at no used games.

Yeah I wonder if you can play the games without the disc. If so there must be some validation code included with each game.

Why would it be blocking used games? You can install any game in full on the 360 and play it solely from the hard drive, but used games aren't blocked. It's perfectly possible that even though the installs will be mandatory with Durango, used games still won't be blocked.

Always online?
Ehhh, not really like but not a deal breaker.

Games required to be installed?
Sweet, I install all mine anyway.

Kinect required to be plugged in?
FUCK OFF!

MS really wants me to be PS4 only this gen.

The always on, always connected thing doesn't read like its an actual requirement at all, more like the system has been designed to run that way power draw wise ( and for background downloadsmetc while in a low power state) rather than it being an absolute requirement.

Edit : People are mad about the install thing ? I don't know anyone in real life who doesn't install their 360 games, why wouldn't you ?

At least the controller is changing. Thank Mars for that.
Kinect being packed in, bleh. They're both packing in stupid cameras.

Always connected...

At least the controller is changing. Thank Mars for that. Will be nice for PC gaming.

I'm looking forward to whatever controller Oculus is working on. That company does not fuck around when recognizing what is important to gaming. Controller elegance is not nearly as important as ergonomics and functionality. I can almost guarantee button placement will be vastly superior to the shitsipping controllers we have now. When you can't see your hand the buttons must be placed in reasonable positions.

This will be completely unacceptable when you can't see the controller. Finally! Change is coming. Let's see what you got, MS.

Nevermind the always online, I don't understand how Kinect + will be required to use the system. Some people's gaming setup, be it in their living room or bedroom, just doesn't allow the space for someone to stand up and wave at the camera. Or at least people are not willing to re configure their living space to use this device.

I hope the sensor is powerful enough so that people don't have to make these changes, or at least that it just has to be plugged in (but not used) to use all the features of the system.

MS has already convinced me where to spend my money next gen. PS4 for me and my friends.

Thats basically what its gonna be. The disc copies itself to your hdd, you play the content from there and then its either:

1. the disc needs to be in the tray to play your game, like some games this gen
2. the disc is registered to your account, eliminating used games

To me it sounds like the Wii24/7 service, where the console was constantly checking for updates in idle mode, not an always online DRM.

But GAF loves to hate everything Durango related, so maybe I should join the apocalypse theories.
