Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Punching things repeatedly kinda hurts your knuckles, y'know?

I don't think Sketch was a trained martial artist, so his technique was all wrong and he ended up huring himself. That makes sense lol.

No idea if that's the real in-universe reason.

Maybe it hurts him to destroy his own hard work, lol.

lol didnt realize this was so common. this happened any time I tried to rent the game.. I would stupidly rent it again thinking they had replaced the bad copy. I think it happens on the Gamecenter CX episode as well.

It is. Also, in an ironic twist, the japanese cart is incredibly rare, actually

I played Vectorman 2 before the first Vectorman. I don't think V2 is trash, although the opening cutscene is rather incomprehensible. Oddly, I think I remember the bug enemies more than the robot ones from the first game... despite thinking they're a less cool set of enemies.

That jungle level is so insufferable. I also remember Vectorman 1 having more neat 'tech demo' style levels centered around Mode 7 effects and such. Maybe V2 has that, though. I can't remember how far I've gotten in it. Def. haven't beaten it.

More of a swamp than a jungle, but I never really had any issues with it.

Did think the lava stage came a bit suddenly (second world? Seriously?), but it was a pretty epic background. Most games have a small pit of lava surrounded by ground safe to walk on (ignoring that convection means that ground should be hot enough to set you on fire, but since when has media paid attention to that little detail?), or bound it with walls of some form so it feels kinda small. Not this stage: that lava goes all the way into the horizon, and the safe footing amidst this sea of molten rock is absolutely minimal. Stunning composition, I thought.

Comments on phantasy star 3? the game is weird, the graphics are cool and bleh at the same time, and the fact the the art style is so different to the rest of the series really hurts the game a bit.

I liked the game. Even though it is considered the weakest of the series, I really enjoyed it. The art style was still great.

I watched a bit of a let's play on Comix Zone. I like the aesthetic. Looks fun. I don't have very many Genesis games right now so I've been getting my fix of beat 'em ups on Youtube lol.

once in a blue moon, lowballing overpriced "best offers" on ebay pays off - got Shadowrun complete for $25!

my next one's looking to be Punisher, if id've known it was a port of the awesome capcom beat-em-up id've been all over that in the day...can anyone find it for $40 or less? i know it's gonna be a loose cart, so some of these prices are silly

I think $25 is about right for Shadowrun. People just want too much when they BIN stuff anymore.

I have Rolling Thunder 2 complete on the way for about $20 shipped. Another game I once owned that I shouldn't have gotten rid of. Very happy. Finally put Streets of Rage 2 back in my collection a little over a week ago too, also complete and in a retail box (it doesn't have NOT FOR RESALE on it) for $15.

There's just so much great stuff on Genesis. I never get tired of shopping around for stuff.

Good job on Shadowrun. I got a copy complete in a bidding war for about ten bucks more than that.

I also hit up some pawn shops and flea markets in my area and got Comix Zone and Thunder Force II for 10 each for cart only. I think I have the Thunder Force II box at home anyways. Kind of over priced but I didn't see anything else Genesis aside from one store out of five plus locations.

^$10 might be high for a loose Comix Zone, but i think it feels okay for Thunder Force 2. i totally get what you're saying too; its so rare for me down here to find old sega stuff locally that i tend to impulsively pay a few bucks more...recent comic con, one table had a short, ignored stack of SMS games! some stuff id had in the day like Alien Syndrome, some that prolly sucks like Global Defense...i offered $20 for all 5 and the guy was clearly happy somebody wanted those games, heh. got home and realized i now have two copies of Rambo (first blood part 2)....

man speaking of SMS, i literally just missed Golden Axe Warrior for < $30; it's a PAL copy so i just googled to make sure it'd work, right? came back moments later to a "SOLD" screen =/

Yeah, I can justify Comix Zone since it came out so late in the Genesis lifecycle and is in good shape for cart only. Hopefully I can complete my copy of Thunder Force II with the box. I'll have to do some digging once I get back to my home town. Pretty much all my games are in storage.

They also had Revenge of Shinobi for 5 bucks cart only but I thought that was a bit expensive. I might go back and grab it another day, since it doesn't look like Genesis games move at all in this town.

haha see idve prolly bought Revenge of Shinobi at that price just because im trying to find an OG version like i had, with spider-man, bat man and godzilla as bosses...the changes in my current copy bother me, but no one in buy/sell or ebay is willing to play to level 3 to let me know, heh

I recently passed up cart-only Shinobi III for $4 at the flea market. The price obviously wasn't offensively high, but I already had the game, and didn't want to spend more than $3. The seller wouldn't budge, so I said c'est la vie. I really didn't need it and hopefully it found its way to someone who would enjoy it.

picked up yesterday at a brick and mortar store,

Ghouls 'N Ghosts CIB (SMS)
Ghost House CIB (SMS)
Thunder Force III Loose (GEN)

I paid $36. I'm not really feeling GnG for the Master System. The pace is so slow, and the movement is really choppy.

Yeah. I can't get Thunder Force II to work. Just a blank black screen. My Genesis is a bit finnicky, but every other game I've got works at least after one or two tries. Q-tipped the dust out, still no dice. Looks like I'll have to go back and return it. So I'll probably end up grabbing Shinobi 2.

I'd pay four bucks for the third one, it's a beautiful game. But obviously no point if you've already got it!

edit: Got TFII to work. It required a lot of Q-Tips and a dab of water. I guess it was really dirty.

Yeah GnG didnt really seem to hit its stride until the Gen and SNES games. Cant comment on SuperGraphx.

Home GnG, of course. That's why I mostly dismiss home ports from this era. Most just aren't worth playing with the arcade versions around.

Wait, you haggled over a dollar?

I got a loose Punisher for 25 at a random pawn shop at town one day. I have a loose cart i could get you for around 30 dollars, but i need a few games if you wanna swap again. We have one at the store (also, by all means, if you guys are looking for something in particular, Ask!)

Im scared to ask how much Musha or Crusader of Centy would be...so what about Splatterhouse 2 or Phantasy Star IV? Also if you guys sell imports.

You should use some alcohol with a q-tip to clean the contacts. I have a bottle of rubbing alcohol that I use with q-tips to clean off the contacts on games that don't work.

For example, one game I have a game called King Colossus (MD) wouldn't work at all on me. I cleaned it with alcohol, let it dry, cleaned it again, let it dry and cleaned it a third time and let it dry. It finally worked after that!
Most games just require a once over though.

I think he implied that he did that already.

I've come across games that refuse to run, too; I've got a copy of Tonic Trouble for the N64 that I've done the Q-Tip trick on countless times, wiping up as much dirt as I think is physically possible to wipe up, but the N64 only shows a black screen when I try it.

MUSHA in our computer is 75, Crusaders is 50.

Far as Splatterhouse 2/PS IV, not sure if we have either, but if we do, they are both around 40 dollars.

For some reason, Gargoyles has always kinda attracted my attention... but I hear the game is actually kinda crap. Thoughts on it?

Dunno why it turns my head, I never got into the series. Wasn't my thing as a kid, and I'm too lazy to hunt it down nowadays.

see, i figured EA's weird carts were from that period where they were arguing with sega about publishing costs & such, before sega cut them that deal.

either way, it sucks when you're buying loose carts, you can only use em for other EA stuff

EA and Accolade did both try to circumvent the licensing system, then accepted deals, but I dont' think that's the only reason why they made their own carts... that may have been a factor in it, but I don't think it's the only one.

Oh, one other thing about EA and Accolade carts is that they are a bit narrower than Genesis carts, so they should work in any Genesis or Megadrive from any region, no problem. That's one other reason for the design.

the graphics and animation are really great. game is alright from what i remember

it exploits a hardware bug that was fixed in the Genesis 3,so it won't play on one of those.

I still can't bring myself to buy any of the EA genesis games, and it's mostly because of how the weird carts look. They're unattractive. Shallow reasoning, I know, but I can't get over whatever psychological effect they have on me. They're just...wrong.

no doubt, but ive always wondered: do you think maybe they bought said carts in bulk from elsewhere, in case those deals didn't work out?

that's pretty handy..you think it's just the awkward cart size, or perhaps that feature was intentional?

aw, it's alla same on the shelf, but yeah they're a bit wider. ive got a few here like Star Control, Marble Madness etc but there's some real gems even beyond their sports stuff; i loved both Starflight and The Haunting in the day, still looking to snag both on the cheap

That is possible, yeah. I don't know for sure.

Given that you'll find some Accolade games which say "for play on Sega Genesis or Megadrive systems" on them, I think it was quite intentional, in their case at least. :) With EA they probably just use different labels for Europe, but didn't need new shells.

Just got done playing some Championship Pro-Am. That game is a blast to play except for when the yellow car cheats. :D
