It was a comic in the German version of the Club Nintendo Magazine, issues May 1996 and May 1997.
because Wario and Bowser flying around space on a NES was apparently too awesome to be canon

Club Nintendo was Nintendo of Europe's official promotion magazine in Germany. They included those comics in there free magazines and also produced promotion comics specially for the release of some games (see my post above). All comics were written in Germany and drawn in Japan only for the German market.

I remember those comics, yeah. Sadly, my collection of Club Nintendo 'zines was lost in the many moves my father and I did when I was a kid. 
Oh God, the new names and texts were so stupid. I specifically remember how they translated the names of the magic spirits in the Mana series... they went from mythological names like Salamander and Dryad to Vesuvius and Harzinger (which, for you non-German speakers, is a surname-ification of tree sap). And that was only very minor "liberties" they took with the translations.
I woulda loved being a German translator for Nintendo back in the 90s, I could've done what I wanted and nobody would've noticed, lol.

Never in my life I thought I'll see the day where Nintendo/Games/Mainstream Charecters are grouped in a narrative that made sense, this should be turned into a TV show or a game.
