PAL Charts - Week 12, 2013

To be honest, I think you're being a bit premature with judging the sales, but that's just me.
And I would think that the fact that Nintendo systems as of late have been getting shoddy ports would deter platform owners to buy it.

It's a vicious cycle really.

Late ports sold just fine on PS3. Bioshock and Mass Effect come to mind. While they will never do as well as their 360 counterparts, they perform well enough to warrant porting the sequels and having parity releases.

Were they missing content, or ran noticeably worse?

To me, the reason for the poor sales of NFS is that nearly all Wii U owners who would be interested in this game already own it on another platform.
It is unthinkable that the "NFS demographic" don't already have either of the PS3 or 360 consoles. Vita version is spared somewhat as people might double dip for an on-the-go version.

The theoretical audience they might be going for are those who jumped straight from Wii to Wii-U without going through the HD twins. I don't think such an audience exists.

Install base when they were released?

It doesnt!!

NFS Wii U doesn't have those problems?

Congrats, you've found the first port that shows extra care being brought to it (and the upcoming Deus Ex). First week sales in the Wii U's worst region isn't exactly the best metric to judge how well it's being received.

I can assure you, those sales figures aren't going anywhere but down.

Still, it could be worse: The Walking Dead game had only 1% of its sales on the Wii U? That's a worrying breakdown that doesn't bode well for future Wii U ports...

Hmmm, I'm not so sure. A lot of people will be pouncing on those cheap Wiius this week....they'll likely buy some games and MW is the best looking of the bunch so might see a little spike.

Then again, it might not.

Last we saw WiiU is doing alot worse in Italy, Spain pretty much everywhere except France. (germany was tied with uk)

To be fair, I'd have bought NFS MW U this weekend if any of the 5 stores I was in had actually stocked the game. Even Amazon and ShopTo were out of stock when I checked and still are as of now. So limited options for those of us not interested in download copies.

How is GOW:A holding up compared to GOW3? Didn't GOW3 drop out of the charts or at least top 10 after the first week?

Also, hearing you guys say GOW:J has no marketing is so weird for me right now.
I live in Israel, and Playstation was always very popular here, but never really had a big promotion since its a small market, and Sony uses another company to sell its products (and a different company is responsible for Sony Mobile products)

Microsoft on the other hand has a huge presence in Israel, including official offices and R&D centers and they also hold events here, but they only launched Xbox 360 officially last year

Now, I keep seeing commercials for GOW:J on some of the biggest websites in Israel
I was more surprised to hear they held a launch party for GOW:J with some of the developers.

It would be highly unusual. Especially in the modern UK games market, where people are conditioned to either pre-order or wait for the first price drop. As I speak, one week after release, GAME have reduced Tomb Raider to £25 on the PS3/360. Anyone buying the Wii U version of Most Wanted right now for £40-£45 is certifiably insane.

Wii U's worse region by market share is not the UK.

Not to mention Criterion have been going on and on about how good this port is etc...

It's drop is highly likely to be worse than gods drop and could even be worse than gears aswell
Ultimate is multiplatform. It'll be roughly a 40-50% drop for a non-promoted expanded rerelease versus a 66-75% drop for two well advertised new games.

Is this the case for Europe alone then? Because in America both ports were considered pretty notable bombs at the time. Bio especially iirc.

Both ports were also after the platform had several years to find it's footing. Year 1 things were even wirse on PS3 woth vietually every late port and multiplatform game underperforming.

It isn't reported on the web anywhere, but a news item appears in the digital version of MCV UK. It says that Wii U sales grew by nearly 125 percent last week (I presume the week ending 23 March), according to "retail sources". The increase is directly attributed to Monster Hunter launching and HMV dropping the retail price of the Wii U Premium Bundle by £140.

I guess they can't say 'because notorious trendsetter SmokyDave bought one', but we all know the real reason.

Nintendo fightback confirmed!

But seriously, Nintendo need every little boost they can get. Right now they need to get Wii Us into homes however they can, even at a loss or breaking even. More owners, more software sales, more word of mouth.

100% increase on below-par isn't fantastic in the grand scheme of things but it's still a positive soundbite in a time of negative Wii U headlines. I'm a Nintendo fan and a Wii owner so I'm really hoping they can turn things around.

Honestly 125% boost from where they were is kind of terrible. So they sold like 3,000 Wii U's last week with the HMV giveaway and MH3.

Eh? How so? All titles above it are pretty damn big games released lately. Not to mention God of War has never been that huge in EU. One of the rare Sony series that sell way better in US.

Week Ending 23 March 2013: £13.4mm on 506,625 units

YTD 2012 £169.8mm on 7.297mm units
YTD 2013 £142.8mm (-16%) on 5.389mm units (-19%)

Big shift this week. Down by only 16 percent is a huge shift in revenue, primarily because consumers appear to be picking up big-name games at full price. Also this is the first time since the first week of the year that the units YTD figure has been better than -20%.

Edit: Spain's software market worth just under €400; don't we have a source on this, somewhere in BKK or Cap'n Smoker's posts?

Can you blame them when they release an enhanced port that runs better and includes DLC that is paid on other versions, and it performs like this?

NFS: MW came out about 3 weeks before NSMBU. I can't imagine people complaining that NSMBU needs a price drop because it's an old game now.

I went into three of the biggest gaming stores in London and none of them had heard of NSFMW:U let alone stocked it, its no surprise it didn't charge with only eshop and pnline sales available. At least GAME stocked Monster Hunter.

I don't know if it has been reported but apparently the 3ds version of Monster Hunter Ultimate sold 10k in France. Source: http://www.gamekult.com/actu/itw-nintendo-la-confusion-wii-wii-u-cest-termine-A108195.html

Philippe Lavoué from Nintendo France said:
(After talking about the focus on Wii U marketing) For example, there's Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate that got released last week. Its sales have been very good and we are pleasantly surprised. The 3DS version in particular has sold 10.000 units. It's number 2 on the market (charts?) which is pretty good for a franchise that is still expanding in our territory.

I could translate the interview a bit in a new thread, it has one or two interesting answers.

Will be interesting to see if the PS3 and 360 actually end up positive Y/Y this month, if the more detailed data comes out.

Ukie Week 13 2013 UK Video Games Charts

‘Bioshock Infinite’ debuts at the top of our All Formats chart this week with the Tuesday release becoming the second biggest launch of the year. In taking top spot it also sets a record as the biggest week 1 for a Bioshock title with almost nine thousand more sales than predecessor ‘Bioshock 2’ which took the No1 back in Week 6 2010.

Despite its success it’s unable to become 2013’s biggest release with Square Enix’s ‘Tomb Raider’ (+45%) in No2 still holding the honour following its release in Week 10. ‘Tomb Raider also sees a strong boost in sales this week with price promotions ensuring it easily holds second place ahead of several other new releases.

It means ‘Gears of War: Judgment’ (-63%) slips to No3 above EA’s ‘FIFA 13’ (+86%) which benefits from strong sales to retain the No4 spot.

There’s a debut at No5 for developer Next Level Games and ‘Luigi’s Mansion 2’ landing on 3DS. It’s the second ghost hunting outing for Mario’s little brother following on from ‘Luigi’s Mansion’ which landed at No3 on Nintendo’s Game Cube back in Week 18 2002.

The first of two new entries for EA in our Top 10 sees ‘Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel’ land at No6 with just over a hundred sales separating it from ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ (+67%) in No7.

At No8 ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14’ is the second of EA’s new releases and along with ‘Crysis 3’ (+64%) at No10 it means they have four titles in our Top 10 this week.

Elsewhere in the chart Wii U exclusive and developer Traveller’s Tales new title ‘Lego City Undercover’ lands at No12.

There’s also the return of Sly Cooper with developer Sanzaru Games bringing the light fingered raccoon back for his 4th outing in ‘Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time’ at No31 for PS3 and Vita.

Bioshock 2 - 121k (90%)
Bioshock Infinite - 130k (90%)

Poor COD it was so close.

Seems like Sly cooper bombed in UK after showing in NPD top 10 that's kinda disappointing.

Also MH fallen to 39.

No adverts what so ever for it. Online sites were even offering pre-orders it for around £24 (which is a bad sign as it is not a budget game). No one knows it exists.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

I'm fairly sure it's due to shortages.
On Amazon, 3DS SKU was priced at 31.99 initially, Wii U one at 39.99. Now they're respectively 35 and 49.91, sold directly from Amazon.
Moreover, looking at European 3DS eShop Charts at least, it charted in 3rd places as highest result in most of them, but in UK it obtained to be even first for some days in the Current Releases Charts, even after Luigi's Mansion 2 released. Yesterday it was 2nd, only outsold by Luigi itself. Reaching such a big achievement for a title that isn't that popular in UK, especially compared to countries much more Nintendo friendly like France and especially Germany means that something not as big, but similar to Fire Emblem in US is happening.

It is. ;)
Don't know about the UK-price, but in US it costs 40$ (PS3 + Vita) and 30$ for Vita alone.

Went to get Sly on Friday and Game didn't even have it out. Probably doesnt help. Got it on PSN instead.
