Thief on PS4 looks 'almost identical' to PC version, runs on Unreal Engine 3

Its that bottom shot isn't it?, i didn't think it was PDZ as the quality wasn't there, i used Google for the images.

Heh, I thought that was the best shot aside from the gloss. Saying those are the best textures on 360 is a mighty stretch though. Halo 4 has much more impressive textures overall than those I would say...

Only the top shot actually shows the true quality, the game looks a lot better when you get the rain streaming down the walls and the lighting is shining off etc.
The point being that it was quite impressive for the time and looks a lot more 'next gen' than Theif does (for the time).

Could simply be a classic case of mistaking artstyle & direction for "graphics". Just my take on it, I haven't really seen anything substantial from Thief 4.

Then you've missed this thread:

Here are two examples:

Apart from the hands, in these two still images, the aliasing and that weird scaling effect hold it from looking like a proper next gen title (once again, it perhaps looks much better in motion much like all video games).

Funny as people seem to always read "PC" as "High End PC" on this kind of quotes. The replies are always like "Lol so ps4 can do 4K@120fps!"

I can't recall any version of Doom 3 for the 360 prior to the BFG version. One could play the old Xbox version on the 360 but that wouldn't really make the performance comparisons being made in this thread apt.

Correct, I was referring to the Xbox title that was hacked for BC and made available on Xbox (360) Live, then removed prior to BFG edition. I think the quoted confused Doom 3 xbox classics with a proper port, which Doom 3 never got until BFG edition (which is far beyond the work done on an average port).

According to IGN the only Doom3 on Xbox360 is the BFG edition, that in no way has lower res textures than the original Xbox1 version.

I was comparing PC Doom 3 (2004) and PC BFG Doom 3 (2012), the latter inferior to the original in a number of respects - not xbox-xbox360 or xbox360-pc.

Losing battle, this is. Any enthusiast PC out there will double PS4's resolution, at least. Almost identical is open to interpretation however.

People read it as such since in the interview with Adam Sessler, it was said so by Thief's lead level designer, Daniel Windfeld-Schmidt.

I think it looks fantastic for a launch title for PS4. I work for a major AAA developer (not going to say as I don't want my inbox spammed) and we have only had the latest iteration of devkits for a couple of months. So for them to get the game running that quickly is impressive, when it's optimised more as well I'm sure they'll push more from it.

So, this is a Ps4 launch title? Pretty awesome

Are you also that optimistic about the console, which's existence you are not allowed to confirm?

Yeah but I don't really think that this is the case. All reviews said the opposite. And, it's not like the Xbox360 would have any problem running a 2004 PC game like Doom3.

Does it really? It looks more or less on-par with current-gen offerings IMO. The lightning is a step above current-gen, but other than that if someone had told me this was a bullshot for a PS3 game I would have believed them.

Considering the PS4 has a 7850 at the very minimum, this game better run 1080p 60fps, otherwise, this is pathetic.

My 6950 runs every single UE3 game at 1080p max settings and a solid 60FPS.

Yep, there is no reason why this shouldn't be running at 190p/60fps.

I hope people claiming this game doesnt look much better than current gen games are PC gamers because nothing on consoles have that level of IQ and textures.

To be fair, a lot of 'current gen bullshots' look really, really good. GT5 bullshots look a generation ahead of what we actually get. Ditto Gears of War 3.

Based on those screenshots, Thief looks pretty damn good.

I agree with you regarding IQ, but the textures aren't impressive at all.

This honestly looks like your typical PC version of a current-gen UE3 game, nothing impressive at all.

This is what I would expect from a cross-gen game, but this game is next-gen only, so it's reasonable to expect more from it.

I think the textures look pretty damn good. Nothing mindblowing, but they still look great.

There are games that look much, much better than Doom 3 on the 360, so I chalk that up to developer incompetence.

The textures look very average.

We are talking about a game that spent years being designed on current gen consoles after all. Debating about the graphics in this is a waste of time. Hell the only thing that matters in this type of game is the gameplay/level design.

If you were told that those shots were from the 360 version then no one would question it apart from the resolution, i expected more than this from even launch games, Killzone for example rips this to shreds.
It would still look average for a launch game even if it was 60fps, those shots look like Wolfenstein or something.

Ah, well I guess we'll agree to disagree :)

This was originally a 360/PS3 game.

I think that's because the textures themselves are good but if you see the 1080p versions like the ones I've posted here you'll notice that they display a scaled up artefact-esque effect .

I dunno. Looks current gen. I expect PS4 to max this out easily.

I think it suffers a lot from not being wildly high quality in the first place, and more importantly not having the very heavy stylization of Dishonored or Bioshock.

The graphics look old school to me, low polygon enviroments with flat textures for the walls etc, if you compare it to Killzone or Battlefield 4 then the difference is huge.

It's been said numerous times already, but this was originally a current gen game. It'll have some big improvements by the time of release, but I don't expect it to take serious advantage of next gen technologies.

So much passive trolling z0m3le. Goddamn.

I really didn't mean to troll anything, I think the PS4 will be the most powerful console you can buy, but that doesn't mean it can stand up to a PC, and I asked that question about the price because GDDR5 isn't going to be cheap, this console is also going to need a lot of cooling because pushing 16 memchips onto a motherboard isn't only complicated and expensive, it produces much more heat. Which means more expensive cooling too... $400 when it is official will surprise me is all.

Ergo, the devs should be doing more than saying, "it's very close" when it comes to comparing because it denotes that the next gen hardware can't keep up with PC when it comes to visuals like this. Unless otherwise, their "very close" is a matter of outright resolution and AA.

Edit: And I didn't know this was supposed to be a current gen game. Thanks for info shinobi.

Looks fine. The upside of being on the PS4 is playing with the new DS controller instead of the terrible DS3 controller. Bring it on.
