Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

I don't think people need to worry about Live going down, just their local Internet connection. These days, connections like that are required to be up 99.999% of the time (5 minutes of downtime a year), or 99.9999% of the time (30 seconds a year)

Any business will require that level of availability for important services. Now, your local provider doesn't have those guarantees.

Haha, wow. The undertones here are incredibly arrogant, condescending, and blatantly shitting on small town America. What a great representative of MS's corporate image.

How will small town America find out if they don't have an internet connection? :)

I see you're banned but speaking for myself: Hell no I wouldn't defend it, I'd be just as displeased. It would delay my purchase for a year or two, until they get their infrastructure right, or possibly mean skipping entirely.

Valve's had ~9 years to get Steam sorted, and I'm more comfortable spending money on digital only purchases with them than I am with either MS or Sony.

Hopefully this Adam Ortho guy is just trolling, I guess we'll know soon enough.

If this guy is trolling, he's got the biggest balls ever.

It takes balls to start trolling online when people can see the company you work for.

It takes huge balls to start trolling online regarding a rumour about the company you work for!!

Creative director, what's that $90,000 a year job?

So Creative Director basically confirms next box will be always on-line.

Some of GAF reacts as if this somehow confirms it must be on-line TO PLAY GAMES.

OR am I missing something here?

Note, I'm not defending the manner in which he had his meltdown. But those are separate conversations I think.

Kotaku rumor earlier today stated that you needed to be connected to play games and use apps on Durango and that it currently had a 3 min. window that you could be offline before being kicked out of said game/app.

Creative director goes on a damage control meltdown stating that "everything is connected anyways" "why the hell would I live where the internet is shit?".

I've lost electricity maybe once in the last two years.

I've had issues connecting to XBL pretty much once every week. The saddest part is I have had 0 problems connecting with Wii U and I have to pay for XBL.

As much fun as it is to see people reacting negatively to the worst player in the console game, I am sad to say that I think once they start revealing stuff people will change their tune. Halo 5 and Gears 4, just one good new IP, many if not all of the same features the PS4 offers, Twitch-exclusivity, whatever DVR/Cable Box function they're going to offer, a subsidized SKU and who knows what other features they come up with will win a ton of people over.

Not saying they'll "win," but I don't think always-online or no-used games is enough to kill them. People already not only put up with GOLD, but defend it. People are... kinda dumb...

If the nextbox isn't always online and the guy was just stating his opinion in a strictly non-professional, casual manner, I feel kind of bad for him.

OK so what's worse.

These MS DRM rumours, or the Wii U?
I would much prefer a console I could actually play versus one that I could not.

Literally, a console being online would make it unplayable for me. It's not even a principles thing, not really. Canadian internet is complete shit and controlled by four or five providers barely distinguishable from the other. It's not like being unable to use my vacuum during a blackout. It's like being able to turn on my vacuum whenever I want, but whenever I do, it intermittently turns off and on in entirely unpredictable intervals.

Steam offline mode for those who keep mentioning that "steam doesn't let you play offline either":

It took them ages to fix, but it does work properly now.

Somebody said it better earlier in the thread but I'll say it again: Microsoft really doesn't want my money. I've got 9 PS3 games and 40 Xbox 360 games; I guess they want it the other way around next gen?

I don't care what anyone says, always online is utter bullshit and no one should support it. Last semester at school our dorm Internet would drop out for several hours a day. Probably 50% of the time I was there the Internet was out. We would system link when that happened but at least we could still play. Always online has to be a joke.

Oh man, I can't even imagine what this would be like if I still lived on campus or in the school apartments.

Come this fall (or early 2014), there are going to be A LOT of angry frat guys.

If anyone wants to post my last two tweets up on NeoGAF up for context for the GAFers it would be appreciated. Just want to provide context.

All those tweets you are seeing about the city being superior. That's him just trolling me. And I fell for it. Don't bust his balls on that.

So @adam_orth got NeoGAFed. You should know we are good friends who joke around with one another. Don't read too much into our back & forth.

Can someone put these tweets first post.

His updated those tweets saying that Orth was joking about the City ones. Can someone put that in first post.

Let's not let this get caught astray here. It could have been a joke to Orth, but damn is it a crude one that this thread has shown as something that seemed far more reaching.

Uh why would the "if electricity will go out I won't buy a TV" point be good enough for you? That makes literally zero sense in this context because electricity is required for any TV to function. This is the same for a vacuum unless there's a handcrank vacuum out there I don't know about. Online is not required for any console to function.

Fine then. Cell phones with shitty coverage. Ultimately the up time is good enough for the things I want to do. If this is all true the same thing will happen with the 720. I buy every console and want the option to play everything. Not everyone has the same level of acceptance that I do with such things. Not only that, but not everyone can get always online with the situation they live in. I'm talking about my personal standards. If you live in a place with shitty or no internet then yeah fuck this console.

:lol
Sure you were joking pal.

That arrogance is making sure that any money I am spending next-gen isn't going toward MS.
Hell, my Win7/8 copies were provided to me for free.

He's responding to the reactions of the kotaku rumor posted today, which does say you will need to be online to play games and use apps.

I didn't read all 25 pages, but I thought I read the whole twitter meltdown but I must have missed him saying he was responding directly to that.

Guys meltdown is laughable, as he's either a real jerk, or is going to wake up tomorrow with some real remorse for letting his twitter mouth get the best of him.

I just don't see how this confirms that you have to be on-line to play games. I think that is some definite over-reaction there.

Too late. If he was just joking, he still messed up. Sarcasm doesn't exist on the internets.

What worries me about this whole thing, is that it's likely Microsoft is positioning Durango as a 'do-it-all' device for the living room — a console that serves up gaming, movies, TV, internet... everything.

If Xbox LIVE goes down, or your ISP has problems, or your router goes out, it's not just your Xbox that goes down...

Your entire living room goes down.

I know Janesville is bad, but I dont think its that bad!

*laughs* THAT'S the 1 I can't believe he actually said. The rest is pre-emptive defensiveness. Insulting mid-sized cities outside of metropolitan areas is baffling and plainly irresponsible and ought to cost him dearly.

Well, duh. No one thinks he hates Boulder, Colorado. It's still purposeless snark without an obvious smirk. That's risky enough to do when one's speaking in person. On INTERNET? Foolish.
