Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

So he states he was trolling the other guy about not living in city locations, but that doesn't change that he stated he doesn't get why people don't want always online, which was the main point of the thread. Him acting like a grade a jackass was just icing on the cake.

At this point there's like an 80% chance the Next Xbox will have always online. Honestly, I'd put a bit of money on it.

MS's creative director wouldn't be mocking like this if Microsoft didn't have something in place.

It's getting close to inevitable at this point.

You really think a creative director could go around being an asshole defending something that officially doesn't even exists?

And furthermore, defending something the public is so sensitive about?

No way.

Besides, it all looks like two people making fun of one another.

If it's true, though, he's going to get axed.

Fun thread. I can't wait for more to be revealed.

Even if he was joking with the Bioware dude, everything else speaks for itself.

OK so what's worse.

These MS DRM rumours, or the Wii U?

Durango will at least have third party games.

Wii U is basically a gutted Gamecube that had all its interesting features removed (competitive hardware and third party support).

Wii U looks worse in my eyes.

Edit: Even comparing it to Gamecube is giving it too much credit.

Of course they will. Microsoft have rarely shown anything but contempt for their consumers and people loved them for it. An always online Durango will sell fine and no matter what consumer unfriendly features are added to it, I'd wager a healthy number of the people protesting here will buy one at the first inducement, no matter what precedent it sets. After all, people were quick to rationalise away DLC, microtransactions, DRM 'services' like Steam and Origin, and while there might be a bit of moaning in the month following Durango's launch, it won't have the slightest impact on sales and soon enough, everyone who happily paid for XBOX Live for seven years will be right there offering Microsoft their money once again. History shows that gamers, no matter what their allegiance (Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony), have never shown themselves capable of taking a stand and holding to it, and there's no reason to assume it will be any different this time around.
Forget the people who aren't capable of taking a stand and holding to it.

It's this notion that the average consumer is somehow getting duped really bugs me. Plenty of people pay for Microsoft's services not because the're the ignorant or uninformed. They pay because they feel it's worth their money. Contrary to what many posters on GAF would have you believe; not everybody who doesn't post on GAF or shoot their load over console wars is stupid. And just because people choose to spend their money on something many here don't feel is worth while, doesn't mean the're getting their eye wiped.

Pretty much. When and if I get the Wii U it's gonna be for the first party games. Smash brothers, Retro Studios game, The next 3D Mario etc.

I'll be using my gaming PC and PS4 for everything else I'll need.

  • Xbox Live won't be successful you need to have broadband.
  • DLC should be on disc, selling content later is a ripoff.
  • Kinect won't sell you need to have a giant living room.
  • Xbox 720 won't be successful you need to have Internet.

Same shit. Different year.
I thought Sony could plow through with a $500/600 console, as they weren't springing it as a surprise on everyone and Microsoft was doing OK with a $300/400 console.

I was wrong. There's a point where you can possibly fuck up royally, and if Microsoft's to have on it's this.

The city one sounds like a joke somebody would say in person. He should have known better than actually writing it though. The analogies are beyond idiotic though.

Are we arguing that the 720 won't sell, or that requiring always on is despicable anti-consumer behavior?

I don't know. You tell me. Either claim is equally ridiculous.

Requiring broadband was said to be anti-consumer.
DLC and microtransactions was said to be anti-consumer.
Kinect space requirements was said to be anti-consumer.

I only feel as though requiring people have their Xbox connected to the Internet would make games better and enable more social/community elements in games. Forcing game developers to build games for backwards individuals who haven't figured out they should connect their console to the Internet is hurting the medium not helping it.

Mobile gaming is starting to pass by console gaming because their users are always connected to the Internet. Microsoft perhaps needs to help modernize the console industry once again. Sony/Nintendo have never fully understood the importance of the Internet with respect to gaming and have largely been dragged to where they are now by following Xbox Live.

Guess those of us living in Wisconsin aren't good enough to own the next Xbox. I'll just have to buy a PS4 instead. Apology denied.

Why do I have to deal with it? I'm making a choice based on my own needs, it doesn't make me a bad person if I feel an always on console isn't for me.

What a joke.

First console I won't be buying at launch since Nintendo 64, if true. I'll let the dust settle, and if they abandon this, I might consider it. But not as it is.

Bye, MS. Sony
and Ninety
gettin all my dollars now.

Well you an say about yourself you didn't get the point and didn't read the thread/arguments agaisnt it.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with most of you in this thread. His comments were extremely disrespectful, beyond stupid considering the position he's in, and it definitely crossed into territory where he was insulting potential customers directly.

When you are in a position of responsibility, you should act like it. I don't have a very big problem with always online. Nothing that I have that's capable of online, isn't online all the time. Times are a lot different now. People who find it offensive should do what I would do when I find something offensive and unacceptable: DON'T BUY IT. As for me, I'll be damned if I'm letting something minor like always online or some idiotic twitter comments prevent me from getting the next Xbox. It's a non-issue for me, other people have a different view. That's fine.

The most hilarious part of this thread for me is all the people acting as if THIS is what did it for them, that THIS is the last straw that broke the camel's back and all that jazz. Over 90% of the people in this thread that have posted, have already made up their minds about what they're going to buy or not buy. Let's be real.

"Why on earth would I live there?" is awesome. I doubt it will live up to "get a second job" or "gamers don't want online" but it's a start, Microsoft can get there.
