Not really sure about the pre-rendered sprites but the backgrounds are gorgeous. But honestly, the sprites in the original weren't really anything special either and didn't fit the rest of the games artstyle anymore than these do.

I'm the least person to complain about Artstyles, but I will admit that this takes all the charm of the original. It was the crayon artstyle that made the orginal game.

And now it's more painterly.
It's good to have variety, spice of life, etc.

The main thing is the sprites don't really mesh well with the backgrounds.
They should have gone with hand-drawn sprites, and maybe they will change it before it ships?

The graphics look not-very-good. I am sure the gameplay will be amazing, but the graphics need some major changes done to them (comparing it to the original SNES game).

Did Nintendo forget how to make good looking games? Looks worse than the original, and the use of those obnoxious sound effects from Yoshi's Story and beyond is a boneheaded move.

I'm pretty sure the sounds have been there post Yoshi Island. And the graphics look fine, it just looks diluted from the stream.

If I forget the original exists, these are about the most perfect graphics I could imagine for this game. Good use of cel shading, I think.

The graphics look more like Dreamland 3 than Yoshi's Island.

The backgrounds look fine but the yoshi sprite needs to better once they fix that the artstyle should be solid.

Between this and the new Zelda, I'd say yes.

Both have inconsistent art styles.

it looks better than a compressed gif of 3d game

Dude, it looks ugly as compared to the original. I'm sorry, but I think it does.

Yeah, this. Coupled with the lack of power their last 2 consoles have had, it's pretty obvious they don't know what the fuck they're doing in the visual department.

It really looks flat and not coherent..

It looks kind of slow and imprecise as well. I hope they tune it up a bit. Yoshi's Island is one of my top 5 games, and my favorite platformer of all time. Yoshi's Island DS didn't really do it justice.

This looks good! The other gifs - not so much. The giant Egg to keep the game "fresh" doesn't imply 'fresh' at all, more of a creative burnout. Why don't you build on the foundation laid in the original and go from there?
It's the 3rd game in a series that spans over 15 years! Nobody buys the game because it's 'fresh' - they simply want a new one!

There must be something wrong with me, I'm not seeing how this game is not pretty.

The character models totally clash with the background and look weirdly poorly animated.

The first game had a consistent 2D artstyle. This... doesn't.

Game looks wonderful. Still have to get the second one and the first one. I hope the first one is released on the virtual console soon to provide some hype for this game...

I hope it's more challenging than Yoshi's Island ds

Did you even play Yoshi's Island DS? Yoshi's Island DS is extremely difficult if you want to get everything. I'm just a bit worried that this game looks quite slow, I want it faster. Mario in Yoshi's Island DS gave Yoshi a perfect speed :).

As many have said, it looks exactly like the pre-rendered animations of the SNES intro. The original still looks better but this doesn´t bother me at all. My biggest worries are music and gameplay. The first Yoshi's Island has one of the most memorable soundtracks of that generation and most Nintendo current OSTs are pretty much bland crap since Koji Kondo is not handling them, they seriously need new talent in that department.

Regarding gameplay, I'm worried because the Yoshi franchise is aimed at smaller children these days and I fear an extremely easy game with bland level design. This was the worst sin of Yoshi's Story, for example, which was otherwise a great idea executed poorly.

I really hope this sequel is not made by the same people who did YIDS. That one was GOD AWFUL.

And yes, the art direction is....weird.

art style reminds me of the N64's Yoshis story mixed in with the original snes style, backdrops also look great imo. the only thing that needs work I feel is Yoshi's animation...seems a bit stiff

As much I love Yoshi Island, I'm probably not going to buy this title. I just don't want to be hyped up into buying something that might only end up disappointing me.

The gameplay snippets in these Nintendo Direct streams are glimpses of works in progress. Early versions, unfinished works.

In years gone by, we'd see stills of unfinished games in magazines.

What I'm trying to say is that I have faith that it will be as good as we'd hope, even if they have to delay it. Just look at Luigi's Mansion 2.
