Three new U.S. Wii U commercials

As ads for the casual audience I don't think they're that bad. The "Actual Wii U owners" part is pretty hilarious though.

No, they are terrible. If they are meant for the casual, they need to explain what it is other than showing kids dancing and saying "pretty graphics".

The casual crowd is the ignorant crowd, they need to be sold on the product by means of features and novelty. All these were were a scripted interview with family members who were forced to get a haircut and teeth whiting for a small bit.

These are better than their first ones for the Wii U.
I don't know, at least the old commercial showed off the systems capabilities and features. This is just 30 sec of a family talking about it being an upgrade without almost showing anything of the system itself.

Looks to me like they're trying to adress the confusion about wether or not it's a new thing or just an upgraded Wii.

The ads are a bit meh to be honest, and I'm not sure if it was a good idea having one of the families talking about how they "upgraded" to the Wii U.. :/

Maybe some part of the (clearly intended) market groups for these ads will bite though.

NOW GO MAKE AN AD FOR ME, Nintendo!

I already have one...

I feel so sad for Nintendo. I really, really want to love them. They have the incredible 3DS which to me is shaping up to be the best handheld of all time (well certainly up there) and they have so many great franchises that I grew up playing.

I've had every Nintendo console since the NES, which was actually my dads and I used to stay up late at night sometimes watching him play Mario when I was little. My first memorable gaming experience was on the SNES with Donkey Kong Country and I too was like N64 Kid when I opened my N64 on Christmas morning. Playing Lylatt Wars and Mario 64 was incredible. Ever since I have got their systems on launch day or in the launch window. So I have a strong affinity to Nintendo.

Then they have the WiiU which I want to love. But it seems Nintendo don't quite know what to do with it.

There are so many points to get across with this new system and I don't think they know how to do it or what to focus on. So the DS had dual screens, that was the key selling feature. The Wii was motion control, anyone can play, that was the key selling feature. On WiiU what's the key selling feature? Is it the gamepad? Is it the 1080P output? MiiVerse? The idea of it being an all in one box which gives you games and your Netflix etc?

I think Nintendo should pull out of the whole aspiring to be the all in one entertainment device and solely concentrate on the games. For example, look at Netflix. It's not the best Netflix experience available, but it's the newest and surely if you are the newest you should be the best!

Games Nintendo. Show us the games and yes they will come but scrap the idea of being this all in one device that's going to compete with PS4 and the next Xbox.

Did nobody say anything about the fact that the one with the two girls shows them playing with 2 Game Pads? Is this possible?

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Do they have two separate ads teams or what? So far, in 2013, their 3DS ads have been pretty good, with the fantastic Luigi's Mansion 2 ad as an highlight, while they still struggle making good commercials for Wii U (Lego City Undercover commercial was good, even if not as good as recent 3DS commercials). Why.

One thing I don't understand is why they try to shoehorn the Wii mote in all their Wii U ads. I understand it's essential for multi-play which they are trying to advertise, but still it makes it confusing as hell.

When I first saw the demo unit with two wiimotes and nunchucks attached I thought the same thing.

I understand ideology behind it. There's a lot of Wiimotes out there. If Nintendo can somehow communicate that they won't become obsolete with this new console it will be a plus for some. For example with upcoming PS4 I understand that you can no longer use DS3 for multiplayer? Not to say that it doesn't confuse some but I think it's better this way all things considered. I firmly believe there's a way to market the thing with Wiimotes and at the same time not to make it too confusing.

the gamepad doesn't seem like an easy thing to sell. it is a distracting experience to feature in commercials. it doesn't help that their two big games out right now are either gamepad-heavy (nintendo land) or nothing special graphically (NSMB:U). can't really think of many angles they can take outside of celebrity endorsements or a crying baby.

I think the fact they use wiimotes is a huge plus point for the Wii U myself and should be shouted from the rooftops as much as possible.

First one was cringe-worthy. The adults just didn't pull off sincerity. But the other two weren't bad, since they focused more on the kids, and I'm pretty sure the kids' responses were candid.

i really hope they don't air these on tv. lol comments disabled even nintendo knows the commercials are bad.

with no developers or gamers supporting the console it's clear they're pushing for the casual to try and gather some sales. their E3 is going to be worse than ever console wise. rule of 3.

nintendo uses fake families for their ads. if these are real then im pretty sure someone shat a brick when the girl in the third ad said "the gamepad makes it easier"

Oh stop, I don't need you to try and justify your purchase. My point was, a family can get plenty of enjoyment out of it, the commercial doesn't distinguish the difference between the two
I'm not trying to justify anything, you're making some bold assumptions and obviously haven't seen my Wii U comments in other threads.

Implying that it would be ridiculous for someone to be willing to give up their other console for Wii U just demonstrates narrow mindedness. I'll ask again, do you own a Wii U? It's quite different to Wii and for parents, non gamers and kids, games like NintendoLand and its asymmetric gameplay is actually pretty cool.

These commercials are aimed at young kids and parents. They match the games that are available for the system right now. The games aren't there yet to warrant ads for teens/young adults.

That said, Nintendo should change things up ASAP. Kids/parents aren't enough.

No games to advertise so they have to focus on the Wii U, which is pretty underwhelming itself without the software to showcase it.

There's only so much you can do to advertise the Gamepad, people need to get hands on with it to really get its appeal.

Some of the lines are a bit too desperate, if you'd ask me.

But it's still the best Wii U marketing attempt so far.

Oh, all the kids' lines were surely scripted. It's the looks of fun on their faces--big eyes and all--that I was talking about. But to be fair, after the first one was so bad, I only peripherally watched the other two, so maybe I missed the terrible acting in those.

Also, how stupid of an ad agency are you to splash the "Actual Wii U Owner. Compensation was Provided" in the middle of the fucking screen

Are they fucking dense

You say "Actual Wii U Owners*"

Put the *"Compensation" part way on the bottom right side in a small fucking font, that you need the fucking eyes of an eagle to see

You don't plaster that shit right in between to go "Warning!, We have might have paid or given away stuff for these response, they are all still genuine, we swear, some the marketing lingo they spoke, they spoke from the heart!"

So, to know the difference even for a gaffer you have to actually OWN a Wii U? You're not making a very compelling argument, especially for the perspective of an average consumer.

Nintendo playing "me too" is seriously biting them in the ass. They were the first ones with motion controls and then touch screens. Now, they are playing catch up with a tablet, 1080p, proper online infrastructure, etc.. Where's the magic creativity you had previous generation?

Yeah, for a couple of hours and then Pop's wondering why he traded in his Xbox 360 and PS3 for a software wasteland.

Pretty cringe worthy to say the least, and they didn't even talk about anything new in the console. Bad Nintendo, just plain bad.

Maybe single people play video games, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.

Exactly the message I get from watching these three commercials. Wii U is a console for families with children, not for single adults or couples. No kids, no sale.

That's too bad, since these other demographics tend to spend a fair amount of money, too.
