Sonic CD didn't have any pits I can recall outside of right before the final boss fight. But then CD was exploration-focused, so you were encouraged to climb and jump down from things.

If I had to talk about Sonic bosses I enjoyed, I would say that there were a few I liked in Sonic 2, I liked about all of them in Sonic 3 & Knuckles personally, I liked them with the exception of the pinball boss in Sonic CD, at the time I enjoyed the Eggman and Chaos bosses in Sonic Adventure, and I liked Biolizard and Egg Golem (as Sonic) in Sonic Adventure 2.

There's a big long space here of me not enjoying them here, though there were a few bosses in Rush and Rush Adventure I enjoyed, but can't remember the boss names.

I kind of enjoyed the final boss in Colors and the Perfect Chaos boss fight in Generations. Actually, I kind of liked some of the boss fights in Sonic 4: Episode 2 now that I'm thinking harder on it.

Heroes.

It ran in PERFECT 60fps on GameCube and I think Xbox (only tried the Xbox version for a moment, it supported 720p!), PS2 was a nightmare.

Shadow I think started the downhill slump, but it was clearly rushed in the first place.

Zero Gravity on Wii is the last perfect 60fps Sonic game, never tried the PS2 version.

I'll grant you that the framerate was good in Heroes, but the engine itself always felt like a step down from the tech they were using on Adventure 2. The graphics were worse and the controls were much less responsive.

The card flipping platforms in Ep 1... and those stupid Walruses in Ep 2. *shudders*

So? This game looks much less complex than Sonic Generations, so there's a chance it can be 60fps on Wii U. Not to mention the GPU on the Wii U is apparently somewhat better than the 360/PS3's. (Although the CPU is weaker)

So? Sega has set a precedent for 30fps on consoles lately, being optimistic for 60fps makes far less sense than expecting the 30fps status quo

Ah yes...that was one of my favorite boss fights throughout the entire saga. But I do agree that the last few bosses in 3&K were all awesome.

Maybe one of these days, they'll give us more like that...

Maybe, but I don't think Sonic is ever getting that 'serious' again, at least not for a very long time. Those were in fact some of the greatest bosses if not greatest of the series. Super Mecha Sonic RULES.

Not a fair comparison. I have a nice PC and even those 2 Unleashed/Generations levels chugged for me. This will hopefully the first console 3D Sonic in years to be 60FPS.

It's a PC, of course it's not a fair comparison. Those stages run at 60fps on my rig. Like I said, I still like the way Lost World looks. You have to keep in mind the hardware available on the Wii-U.

This better be 1080p + 60fps.

The graphics are very underwhelming from a technical standpoint and that's disappointing because, otherwise, this looks like the most interesting Sonic game since the 16bit entries.

Judging from the screenshots this is definitely 720p, but who knows, it might make 60fps more likely. I wouldn't expect it but the chance is definitely there since I imagine Iizuka knows the fans love 60fps.

Generally I think Sonic 3 & Knuckles had the best boss fights in the Sonic franchise, I can't really think of a boss fight I disliked and there are some boss fights I really enjoyed in those two games. It also helped, again, that the end-game fights to Sonic & Knuckles had a great epic feel to them, were varied, and actually quite a bit of fun. Not pictured in the final boss shots, but I even liked the gravity ball-thing you fight before the giant finger-mecha.

Super Mecha Sonic was definitely the best, though. I also loved the Death Egg Act 1 boss fight.

The shots are 720p screens. Pretty safe to say that's the target res.

sonic 3 yeah, sonic 2, not so much.
The last 2 levels in sonic 2 are one gigantic bottomless pit.

Huh?

Here's all the pits in Sonic 2:

Emerald Hill Act 2 - 1 very small pit and covered with a floating platform.
Chemical Plant Act 2 - Few towards the end and on the sides of the boss battle. Falling into one you usually hit a platform or spring that lets you escape.
Hill Top Act 1 - 1 small pit at the very beginning.
Mystic Cave Act 2 - 1 spike pit you can't get out of.
Metropolis Zone Act 3 - 1 big one at the end that you ride a platform over.
Wing Fortress Zone - It's a sky level...

So that's 6 levels with pits, some of which hardly count, out of a 20 level game.

One day I will beat unleashed. One day I will collect sun medals. Until then Im stuck in chun an.

Do you have Generations on PC? There's a pretty good fan project that converted the Unleashed daytime levels to Generations levels. They fixed a few frustrating things and there were a couple sections that aren't quite as good with Generation's controls (I'm looking at you Chun-Nan water section) but other then that its really really good.

How about Sonic 4 episodes 1 and 2?

Compared to the GBA games, way less imo. Episode 2 does a much better job about it. Obviously if your are on a sky fortress level there will be a bottomless pit here and there. If you are on a tornado stage you will also have bottomless pits. Also check the tails mechanic and managing him mid-flight.

Episode 1 i don't remember ever being too bad in this regard, completely manageable. Still a horrible game though, but obviously that's beside the point.

I would except the fact you had to the whole of act 2 and fight the first phase of the final boss, which needed you to wait so you could attack and then you fought the final boss while the timer still going.

It a was poorly designed section.

Not really. It took a little while sure, but calling it "poorly designed" is false.

Pics look great. And nice to hear Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Eggman are the only (hopefully) other returning characters. Hype is growing.

As soon as I saw the level layout I thought Sonic Galaxy too hahaha. Game looks great though, not jaw dropping from the vid but it looks really good and the vibrant colors are really doing it for me.

With the strong notions of Mario Galaxy, I would think Nintendo has to be going in a different direction for 3D Mario.

I like Blaze the cat ever since Sonic Rush. I was hoping she would make an appearance.

Really digging the art direction with this game, I dare say I am anticipating a Sonic game for the first time in a while. I did enjoy generations and colors but both didn't feel quite up to snuff in the end.

sky chase. You can fall from the plane.
In sonic2 there are probably more bottomless pits than sonic3, that's my point.
I'm not saying they are silly like the dimps game, absolutely not.

same here, it has me all the more excited for e3. really curious what the hell they could have planned at this point.

Better comparison to Generations:

Lost World looks better IMO. It's less busy and the new style more than makes up for the less demanding graphics. Also I suspect that this game will be the return to 60fps for Sonic games, I don't really see any other reason for them downgrading the graphics so much. (I'm not saying this as a bad thing)

I'm actually glad it looks the way it does, I couldn't keep track of stuff well in the 2d side scrolling parts in green hill zone because there was just too much stuff combined with the motion blur. Id always end up running into motobugs because they dont stand out well enough.

I think a few of the textures could be a bit more detailed, the ends of the logs and the fish and such, but generally speaking I agree
