Pretty depressingly awesome episode and so intense there once the climax came and everything. Keeping Eraser relevant and actually doing things really keeps this anime quite excellent.To think theyd even have him succesfully take Shunsuke core. Poor guy and for Shunsuke, this failure must be difficult, I wonder if he will go through a depressing type of ordeal characters do.

Shanta's human form is just too cute. I was also pleasantly surprised to hear Satomi Arai reprise her sarcastic narrator from Ookami-san at the start and close of the episode. One of my favorite roles that she's done, and bringing it back here fits with the nature of the series. I hope the Wakamoto-voiced ShoPhil vacuum can become a regular side character too. These past two episodes have been pretty relaxing, and it appears they were that way for a reason.

He gains the ability to go Titan and his limbs regenerate. This is all due to the injection his father gave him.

Yeah, this is Shinkai's best film. For once it feels like he's actually directing. Also, unlike 5 Centimeters Per Second, which this bears the most resemblance too out of Shinkai's prior works, this has a satisfying emotional arc.
It's not wildly different from what he's done before, but it's a much refined version of it.

HOLY CRAP. What the hell did I just watch?
Anime of the year so far for me. So much for the whole artificial war prediction. The writers took that plot direction possibility and friggin' stomped on it in this episode.
How the hell is this show going to turn out now?

Okay, from what I could gather, there were two factions on Earth. One supporting some kind of evolution, and another one that was against it. The evolvers basically wanted that thing that Lizardman wanted in the Amazing Spiderman movie, as they wanted to turn humans into those advanced life forms. So basically, the Galactic Alliance is the faction that opposed the evolvers and the evolvers have well "evolved" into their own separate race.
In other words, they've achieved something far beyond human levels and the alliance just can't accept that so they have to wipe them all out.
Now that Ledo knows the truth after his little massacre, the Whalesquid fighting back makes perfect sense. It's probably where the whole curse came from, and it makes sense because they were once humans so they probably still have the human intelligence of revenge and fighting back.
The irony that is to come from this is incredible.
Ledo had a choice on whether to wipe them out or not, but he forced himself to carry on his original task. Now he knows the truth, and if they attack Gargantia...he may not have a choice anymore. Whether he wants to kill them or not.

That's a compliment! Shinkai was able to match his beautiful visuals to the story he was trying to tell in some really effective ways, when at past those two elements have been at odds with each other. It probably helps that there weren't any science fiction elements.
