Said it earlier but this shit will turn into a marketing war. Come mid summer and August it's going to get ugly. Sony is going to have to wake up on the marketing end. I know they have better people now but they are really going to have to be PS2 era marketing

Do they have the funds for that? Not sure but they can't take this "well gamers and the internet will help spread the good word". They need to seriously go in the War Chest to keep up with MS

Classic Microsoft. Instead of using money to create content, they use money to deny access for competition. Potential Xbox owners have nothing to gain from these tactics, since the titles would've come to the platform without moneyhats anyway. It's very anti-consumer, business maneuvering.

Let's not jump the shark here. It hasn't even been confirmed. :/

if that last microsoft rumor is true, it would work. I mean, it would not work with me thanks to all the time that i pass on gaf but it would work with part of the market. I would have to explain the situation to some friends before the E3 because they would be disapointed with the ps4 and they want to like the ps4. This xbone is going to give me a lot of problems... even without owning one.

Two of our most trusted neoGAF insiders have said that Microsoft is reacting hard to what has went down, and so they're going to try to dismantle PS4's image as a "for gamers" console by paying publishers and devs to not show their multiplatform titles during E3 on a PS4. In other words, even if the multiplatform version is coming out for the PS4, they won't be able to show them at E3, thus contributing to the perception that somehow Sony is getting significantly less support for PS4 than Microsoft is "for gamers."

Of course, I'm sure multiplatform games will slip through - they can't possibly pay everyone - but it's extremely telling how they're choosing to spend their money

This is the attitude I've personally associated them with all this time and why I've been uncomfortable paying for Live and this and that. Or just supporting them in general. I get that people love Live and that it's important to them and that it's a service that works very well, but I've always been subconsciously apprehensive about it. I'm guilty of paying for it myself but I stopped long before this stuff went down.

If I may be blunt, and this will no doubt make some eyes roll and that's okay, but I really don't get the impression that Microsoft respects the videogame medium. They cater to popularity and try to be the cool kids on the block so hard, I mean look no further than Peter Moore's badass GTA tattoo, and they've always had this annoying mantra. I get that they're running a business and obviously it makes sense for them to reach out to everyone they can and that's fine, but I get nothing but a vibe of dishonesty from them concerning games.

All I get is a look us too! attitude about them and it just rubs me the wrong way. I don't get this from the other guys and that's why I'm more tolerant with them when they make mistakes. I usually try not to make posts like this because it's very much a personal feeling, but I've been gaming for almost 30 years now and Microsoft may be the sleaziest fuckers I've ever did business with. Nothing honest about them to me and these recent developments, while not surprising, well it doesn't do a lot to change my mind.

Holy fucking fuck. That is insane. Paying devs and pubs to ditch out on the PS4 version is crazy.

I'll be paying attention to which devs/pubs accept this BS. MS's ship is taking on so much water - it is a safe bet not to piss away good will from PS gamers.

Yeah yeah, but they deal with hardware now and have been since the original xbox (practically called it xbox1 for fuck sakes). I think its about time they hire a few engineers who know what the fuck their doing.

For me its very simple now, ps4 at launch wait and see on Xbone. Fuck that, i aint touching this shit on day one.

I feel like that they should have partnered with another company to manufacture hardware a long time ago. They could provide the software and the OS, but a third party could guarantee hardware performance and reliability. But there's no money in that and Microsoft seems fine with releasing products that are half baked and not tested thoroughly.

You seem to be forgetting that they (the ps4 at least) have direct access to large amounts of ram. If they are using more than 2GBs of ram per frame, then the majority of video cards out there are going to simply choke. People are going to have to drop vram hungry effects and textures. Also, PC requirements seem to get inflated when the game gets ported. Like Bioshock Infinite, they recommend a video card with 1GB of ram which is more than what 360 or PS3 have. Even the minimum requirements is 512GBs. The only way there isn't going to be a problem is if they develop the game with the PC in mind or we start getting 4GBs of vram on video cards.

I game SLI Titan... So... I forget a lot.

:)

The two aren't even the same fucking thing. Microsoft is paying for studios to simply not show the PS4 version, not dumb it down. It would take a lot of money to get a company to suicide their PS4 versions by dumbing the products down, because at the end of the day the PS4 releases will be compared to other PS4 games, not Xbone games. And PS4 exclusives are going to look significantly better.

WTF, if this ridiculous thing is possible by money hatting, the other is also possible not likely but its possible. I am not saying make the PS4 version 'bad' but make it look identical even when it was possible to make it look and run better. Anyways, we'll have to see how it plays out when the next gen games comes out.

Well, they won't pay the whole industry. I guess this rumor is about developers like EA with whom MS has entered a "strategic alliance" whatever that means. Basically, it is not much different from having this or that developer on your stage during your presentation, but not on your competitors stage.

Will those third-party games even be playable on the xBone? Will it be CG Madden all over again?

I bet Sony's exclusives will be looking clean as shit, if they're compared to a bunch of target trailers and beta builds, it could even be a disservice to Microsoft.

After following this thread since it started and not posting, all I have to say is...utter disappointment. I thought we were getting over these practices but it seems MS are stuck in this perpetual loop. Just disappointing.

This will backfire spectacularly given Sony's laser focused vision on first and second party titles. Giving Sony more time to show things like Santa Monica's new IP, Killzone, Infamous, and maybe even something like The Last Guardian works against Microsoft. Or if someone like Naughty Dog or Ready at Dawn shows up. Besides, Sony is already going to show Destiny so it's evident that some third party companies can't be bought.

But if they only manage 800 giga flops, won't that make ports to the Wii u easier?

The Wii has no prayer of running XBONE/PS4 games, 800 gigaflops or no.

It's not selling, and is going to be completely buried by new console hype from E3 until the end of the holiday season in January. Anyone but the nintendo hardcore throwing down cash for it at this point is a fantasy.

Nintendo had (slightly less than) one year to make a case for the WiiU and massively fucked it up. It's done.

I've talked to more people since then though and this isn't the usual jostling for publishers on stage that happens at E3. Microsoft is throwing BIG money around to reverse course on idea that they aren't a games console. The rumors are that PS4 versions of multiplats, by those who do take the money, won't be shown AT ALL. Not on stage and not on the show floor.

It's going to be fucking fascinating seeing which publishers take Microsoft's exclusive deal.

I don't think you understand my point. The PS4 version has to compete with other PS4 games, not Xbone games. So leaving the PS4 version identical to the Xbone version reduces the success the game will have on the PS4. Microsoft will have to throw A LOT of money around for publishers to be ok with that.

It is sad to see MS screw-up the Xbox brand, as they clearly are. Microsoft even Cancels E3 Post-Press Conference Roundtable with Media. Not a wise business move if you ask me. IMO they have just about done everything wrong, and they seem to have alienated their core audience. They should have called the new Xbox for Xbox TV. At least that would have been honest. Looks like Xbox is destined to be one big flop even before hitting retail, that's got to be some kind of record IMO.

I know what you mean. I've watched a couple of Cerny's talks (marlbe madness retrospective, and The Method) and the guy comes off as super genuine, someone I'd like to be friends with. The MS guys on stage for xbone reveal were kinda...idk if creepy is the right word, maybe off putting is better.

Wii U's problem in this regard is not GPU performance but memory size. 1 GB compared to 5 GB is huge and an enormous obstacle for cross-platform versions.

My decision to wait a year after the consoles release seems to be the right one. Either these "sources" are correct and Microsoft's console is doomed or they are full of shit. Either way...I'll know in a year based on the games that come out for both consoles. It will be clear and without a doubt which console is the most bang for the buck.

Somebody needs to create new thread about his. Absolutely shameful tactic if true.

How is not showing mulitplat going to hurt Sony? MS are dummies.

It's about mind-share.
If MS appear to have more games then they will look like they've the gamers interest in mind. If all proof of multiplatform status is cloistered inside PR statements posted online after E3 then it'll seem as though MS have the monopoly on third parties. Of course, for us on GAF it has little difference but the mainstream media will probably report titles as being on the platform they're revealed on.

I know why Msoft would want that, but why would game publishers/developers want to shun a game on a platform they're releasing games on? Sounds like they're agreeing to lose money to me.

FWIW famous seems to be legit. He had told me about Batman Arkham for Vita before it was announced.

Yep new thread for new news. This is literally insane info.

That is not news though, that's a rumor. And it's better to keep our insiders hidden in threads so we can keep getting more info. Outing them will only mean they will stop talking and so will other insiders.

Who is the second source on this outside of Mortimor? I just ran this by a 3rd Party Dev and he told me this is a ludicrous idea.

I really don't feel comfortable outing sources, because I want them to contribute on neoGAF in the future. If they out themselves openly or someone else does it, that's a thing. You can probably find the source on your own if you are decent at using google search.

It's just a respect thing. I'm no snitch, and I respect people's desire not to be in the spotlight (and also not to get in trouble so they'll share info in the future). So I hope you guys can understand why I'm hesitant to always outright link the sources I'm posting.

I am absolutely, definitively NOT an insider, so nothing I am saying about E3 comes from any thing that is a neoGAF post from a genuine insider (or someone who has demonstrated they have good sources) and I mostly only discuss the ones from credible sources. This one is from two credible sources.

I can imagine that Sony was pushing hard to get Bungie's new game to be more associated with their console than with the XB1. Appearing at the PS4 reveal, exclusive DLC. It obvious that they want to have "the creators of Halo" associated with them now and sway people.

Heck, even that CG trailer had something along the lines of "Creators of Halo, Publishers of Call of Duty" or something like that.

thread worthy no?

yeah, no reason to question that guy. As far as I can see he's legit.

He DID say though that this is something microsoft is "attempting" to do, and "of those who take the money" no games may be seen for PS4.

This isn't likely to be any JP devs of note (because MS is nonexistent in Japan), nor is it likely to be anyone the size of EA, Activision, or Ubisoft. Not only are those three simply too large to moneyhat that way, no one in their right mind thinks Madden, COD, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, etc won't show up on PS4.

MS needs to fight back in the messaging war and show at E3 that the Xbone is all about the games even if that means spending money to create even an illusion of exclusivity by having big third parties only appear on your stage, demo on your console etc.

Actually, I think EA is exactly who famousmortimer is talking about.

Honestly, I think the "boner trailers only" thing will backfire hard, even ignoring how slimy it looks. It's just setting things up for a) an ugly-ass trailer and then the PS4 one looking better or b) bullshots followed by a really disappointing xbone release.
