Wall Street Journal: Xbox One - "You own an object, but you merely access a service"

I honestly can't believe how they thought they could pull this off... It is hilarious at this point.

Who is to say they cannot though? I know people on here are against what M$ is doing but I think the less informed consumer (and there are plenty of them) will flock in droves to this system. From what I read on here the pre-orders in the UK for the X1 are outstanding.

Personally I think this system will sell extremely well in the US and I bet it will be very hard to find a system the the first 6 months of the release.

And to keep this on topic great read. I am glad the big name media outlets are calling M$ out.

I just don't get the issue, everybody here is going to buy an Xbox One. It's a massive leap over it's predecessor which will result in awesome looking games and the TV and Sports additions are great! If I want to play games while looking something up on the internet I can do that, right from the Xbox. Can the PS4 do that? Does the PS4 have the ability to track and update your Fantasy Sports stats in real-time, as you're watching the game? I can easily change channels by using simple and intuitive voice commands and gestures thanks to Kinect. And with my tablet device I get extra bonuses in games thanks to SmartGlass.
Xbox One is my Next-Gen console of choice.

Too obvious?

I'm sure if they had their way you wouldn't even own a console. The companies would charge you a monthly fee to "rent" it so that you end up paying more to have it than you ever would if you just bought one. This is what Cablevision does with cable boxes.

You should check the batteries on your sarcasm detector.

I thought maybe sarcasm but he is playing very straight. On the other hand it's too blatant for astroturfing (maybe he's new?). Could go either way I reckon...

MS, we do not sow

I know you meant this as a joke, but it really does bring up another important issue with this. Kids who can't trade games with friends or trade them in freely for store credit are less likely to be gamers when they grow up.

They're striking a blow to the long-term health of the industry in order to reap (perceived) immediate rewards. Though I think they're also going to suffer immediate damage from this rather than reap rewards.

The crazy thing is, Sony stands to win, almost by default, if they simlpy say "We have no DRM". That's it.

Soccer moms will eat that shit up.

Hell I will eat it up!

I hope this backlash makes Sony shake in their boots if they have any similar plans.

If they come out and say that I'll eat crow.

My cynicism tells me their silence is them trying to figure out how to deliver the message in a bit better way than Microsoft has.

We will eat it up. Joe Wallmart probably won't have a clue.

Don't underestimate those MS marketing dollars. They managed to make that broken POS Kinect a success.

Indeed as a kid you trade and loan a lot since you probably only get 2-5 games a year... Or total...

Taste in games differ to so one would never have tried many games if one could not borrow.

I am ok with games all turning into a service that you can't own or sell if and only if all games adhere to F2P model; even single player games.

Now that this is hitting more mainstream and general public news sites, wonder what it'll mean for the Xbox One.

Started with just IGN, Polygon, Kotaku, now it's on Yahoo, WSJ, Forbes (non-contributor).

Wonder if the general public/casuals will now react to the Xbox One in the same way as gamers, in a negative fashion. Microsoft is screwed, they're silver lining on this dark rain cloud was that the "masses" would still buy it. Now that's potentially going away. If the general public+gamers give Microsoft the justified hate they deserve, well... Xbox One is boned.

I got a phone and tablet for that.
I expect a dedicated game machine to offer substantial content...

For you guys future reference, this is what Hollywood would like to do as soon as possible.

They'd rather you never be able to own a physical copy of any film or show, but rather perpetually rent temporary access to them and have to pay again to watch again. They just don't yet have the momentum to fulfill their dreams. But not many days hence...

better buckle up my hardcore friends gaming is going mainstream
my mother will be playing kinect golf on xbone in less than 2 years

I'm actually starting to think that Sony are deliberately staying quiet while MS entrenches themselves in this shitstorm deeper and deeper so they can't flip-flop before E3.

At this point all they have to do to upstage MS at E3 is to play this one card.

wasnt this obvious?

Why end the speculation prematurely?..People are practically begging Sony to save them.

Its the greatest PR campaign they have ever had and it hasn't cost them a dime.
