Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS: Info Collection - Dojo, Mega Man and Trailer! 2014!

Yeah, that's the impression I got out of what he said, not "we're cutting a boatload of characters." Just that there are some characters' playstyles that might have to be changed. I could see Pokemon Trainer being a potential problem on 3DS too.

Just from a readability stand point having him in the back of stages would be really confusing on a small screen. I think him being in the backgroun will be cut or severally changed for the 3DS version.

Pokemon Trainer should be first to go IMO. Worthless except for the 3 extra characters in Project M.

But knowing Sakurai, that's why he's definitely back in

Cutting Pokemon Trainer would be cutting out 3 whole characters... They wouldn't do that lightly, and I think all unique Brawl newcomers will come back, possible all newcomers except Snake.

olimar/pikmin rep is pretty much a sure thing.

edit:

damn 3DS ruining it for everyone else. Why F is the game even on handhelds. all it's going to do is fuck up the wii u version.

you guys seriously think they'd cut Olimar after Pikmin 3 is released and Olimar being one of the most anticipated newcomers of Brawl and one of the most unique characters?

Come on

What we'll see is probably characters that work slightly different or more simple on the 3DS.
In regards to Olimar, they could make it so he plucks Pikmin out of the ground but they don't actively follow him; rather there's an indicator of some sort to show how many Pikmin he has in tow. His moves would still play the same, I.E. if he plucks five Pikmin, you'd see he has five Pikmin in the form of some onscreen indicator (rather than five Pikmin models individually following him), and when you use his whip move to grab an edge, all five still appear, but disappear back "into" Olimar afterwards.

With how he put it I kind of expect Megaman to be the only 3rd party character.
We had 2 third-party reps, last game, and now we know we have at least 1 more (with Pac-Man highly likely due to Namco making the game.) I wouldn't expect more than those 4 companies again. Sonic should be fine, but Snake could easily be replaced or cut.

I have to say the only really disappointing thing about the game for me is the name of it. Might sound picky of me but for some reason just calling it "Super Smash Bros. Wii U" or "Super Smash Bros. 3DS" sort of lessens the entire impact of the fact that we're getting an entirely new Smash Bros after so many years. Remove that and you just have another game falling victim to the stupid "original name implied reboot" cliche.

In regards to Pokemon Trainer, I'd be cool with them splitting him into three separate characters -- Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard -- and giving each a new move to replace what was formerly their "Change Pokemon."

Worst news we could possibly get next to Sonic not coming back.

I already dread the tears people are gonna get when their main is cut.

My Sonic returning meter is now at 50 after that interview.

I'm preparing for him to not return, my main before him was C. Falcon. I'll just go back to him, still hoping Sonic is back, but I can understand if Smash isn't big enough for two Blue gaming icons :'(.

I'm hoping the 3DS doesn't also hold back the Wii U versions modes as well. Still hoping for Pacman, and Snake. But Sakurai makes it sound like 2-3 third party characters may be in it. I'm sure Megaman isn't the only one, they would've said so by now. What's Konami and Nintendo's relationship like now?

exactly, there's things they can do to make this work just fine. Never did he say they had to cut characters to accommodate the 3DS version, just that some would have to be "cut back" IE simplified for the 3DS. And it read to me they were being simplified specifically for the 3DS and shouldn't effect how they work on the Wii U

We've found Professor Beef's new main, complete with smug taunts and gimmick burial like pointing out Pit's inability to actually fly.

Just put in Charizard with Red in the background, cut down on extra movesets, keep the trainer and the fan favourite Zard.
Now to flee from the Squirtle Squad and Ivysaur fans.

Man, if we're talking about a smaller or Brawl-sized roster I hope the don't waste spots on Pac-Man and a Mii. How boring.

The more I think the more Olimar sounds like the most certain character to BE in the game =P

Pikmin3 is the most Miyamoto heavy game on development right now and Pikmin is one of the newer franchises to be included in smash (lost the spot of "THE newest" to Wii Fit =P) and Sakurai jab to "no new franchises with fighters since 1999 ?" on the last dojo kinda says a lot about what sakurai thinks of new fighters

I can see the Ice Climbers getting the axe honestly, do people care about them? Just asking.

I can't because they are one of the most unique characters.

Also, did Sakurai specifically mention Ice Climbers? Someone should ask Rich if Sakurai said Ice Climbers or if Rich added that to the article.

The Ice Climbers were put in Smash in order to represent the NES era. I can't see them leaving.

Oh yeah I don't want to see them leave, just in case they can't find a way of making them work.

I don't think what he said amounted to "we're going to cut characters".

This is a basic "How do I 3ds?" question but will there be some form of automated match making to play this game online on the 3DS? Or do I need FCs and all that other jazz?

Yeah and you've played Project M right? After seeing the Skyloft stage, I bet Sakurai has

I don't see more than 3 Third Party reps. And I didn't expect more than a dozen newcomers to begin with.

Keeping in mind that I'm expecting some replacements in place of full-on newcomers (Chrom for Ike, Mewtwo for Lucario), the roster will probably top out at a slim... 48, let's say? 46-48 is what we should be expecting.

Nope, didn't play Project M. Did they split up Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon?

The main loss to splitting up the three Pokemon Trainer Pokemon would be conceptual: They represent the "team" aspect of the series.

However, if there's a technical limitation of any sort, I'd be fine with them breaking them up and making each more fleshed out with a new move.

I'm thinking 50

Toon Link and Snake are the only two cut
Mewtwo returns from Melee
That leaves about a dozen newcomers, which is a decent number, especially if older characters get reworked

Hell yeah. New movesets just like you said. This'll change your life: http://projectm.dantarion.com/

Yea~

I wonder if the roster would be inbetween Melee and Brawl as well

Edit: I highly Doubt it's be less than melee

My personal prediction was ~47 characters total, although I can easily see the game being in the 42-45 range depending on how many veterans Sakurai wants to cut. I only cut three vets for my roster prediction (Lucario, Wolf, Snake) and added Mewtwo, but I could easily see Sakurai cutting Lucas, Falco, Toon Link, and Ike as well to make room for more new characters if there's some sort of hardware limitation or he wants to keep the roster smaller. That would be sad for me, though, because Lucas, Falco, and Lucario were my mains in Brawl.

I don't think there's going to be that big of a limitation, though, or that Sakurai wants to keep the roster terribly small. I would think the mid-40s is probably what we'll get. 50 is the absolute upper limit, people hoping for more than that are fooling themselves.

not terribly happy about 3DS and Wii U sharing the same cast, but at least they are considering DLC

and can we call this game just SSB4 now?

Here's something I'm thinking about: If HAL Laboratory is being listed next to Nintendo in the copyright, where's Namco Bandai? Are they still aiding in the development of the games? If not, when did HAL take over the reins? And why have none of the press asked Sakurai about this?

That article mostly makes it sound that Ice Climbers won't return because of the 3DS.
It is scary to think what veterans won't return.

I wouldn't mind some of the clones being removed in favor of newcomers, but I'm sure not everyone feels the same way as me.
Oh hell yeah. Get rid of clones before the unique fighters.

Only acceptable "clone" is Weegee. Everyone else is expendable.

It seems way too early for people to be freaking out this much just based on one vague comment. The 3DS isn't so weak of a console that it can't handle a fighting game. The system is probably more powerful than the Gamecube was in many ways, after all. I would wait until we have more info before jumping to conclusions that characters are being cut. The comment could just as easily mean that they can't do some of the crazy stuff they were hoping to do that wasn't in a previous Super Smash Bros. game.

Namco doesn't own the copyrights unless a third party character they own is involved, at which point they'd simply be licensing it to Nintendo. They're a third-party contractor.
