Kamiya concerned that Nintendo isn't marketing Wonderful 101 much at all

Yeah, I guess so.

My post to you didn't mean to sound temperamental, it's just that when people say stuff like "...What the hell is going on in this game?", "...I still don't know what's going on in this game." It just sounds as if they're actively trying to devalue it; as if it's the games fault that they don't understand what's going on, therefore deeming the game shit.

Oh absolutely not. I'm sure it's going to be good and I've read positive impressions, I just am honestly a little confused on what's going on despite reading up on it.

It's just going to be a VERY difficult game to market.

I think the problem with W101 is that even if Nintendo pushed it down our throats with a 50 million dollar marketing blitz, I don't think this game will sell well even then. I have watched a few videos of this game in action and I'm not that interested in it nor do I know exactly what the appeal should be.

Maybe, but there are a lot of people who may be interested that aren't informed of the games existence. Just because some people may not be interested in it doesn't mean they shouldn't attempt to appeal to those who may have some slight interest in these types of games and have no idea of it's existence.

There are even people in this thread who browse gaf daily who didn't know this game existed, sadly.

Was Nintendo marketing this really going to help though? I mean I guess we'll never know but this just seems like a word of mouth game regardless. There's no way to look at this and immediately get it. It's like if Pikmin were bounty hunters? Idk..

I played the Wonderful 101 just over a week ago at a Nintendo event and it's insanely good. If you don't buy this game then you simply don't like games period.
this is hands down the worst type of appeal, buy it or you're a phoney bullshit.

It's also released the same week as GTA V in NA...
GTA V isn't coming to Wii U so not sure how that affects Wii U owners..

Of course. Or else Nintendo shouldn't have funded it in the first place. Maybe that was the first mistake, greenlighting a game like this.

Many folks have multiple systems. If they have $60 are they going to spend it on GTA or Wonderful 101?

Possibly. I don't think this game is going to really do anything for them in the long run. Not sure why they green lit it to begin with, but I'm glad they did :p

Of course you could always...I don't know...market to general audiences which is the main target for the game anyway?
There are many games we see commercials already on tv and the internet that end with "game has not yet been rated".
Come on.

It is possible to be a Nintendo fan and still acknowledge their mistakes and call them on them.

You don't know much of marketing, eh mate? There's no such thing as a general audience. That's the first thing they teach you.

If they're going to market this to kids, then they need that E rating. If they think it might get an E10+ or T rating, they can change when they put the ads on TV to target the older demographic. E can target all of that range, but the latter are more focused ranges. With such a niche title, you're not going to get a lot of marketing efforts and need that focused range.

With how the market works with parents and targeting children, you don't want to throw your game to the general audience, wind up with a T rating and then lose out on marketing efforts or have backlash.

And hell, this is Platinum. This could be an M-rated title for all we know.

In Kamiya's favor, so far this is by far the longest thread about only the The Wonderful 101 and will soon pass "Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101 to stay as Wii U Exclusives" in length.

Given it's a notably niche game on what is currently a notably niche system, GAF is probably a fair amount of the target audience.

People is really having a hard time understanding that games made with Nintendo's money and published by the company won't land on other platforms, right...?

It's a shame, this is probably my second most anticipated game of the Year, but Nintendo is probably going to enact the Platinum curse and ensure that this game doesn't get the exposure it deserves :(

Responding to: http://www.gamespot.com/the-wonderful-101/videos/project-p-100-wii-u-e3-2012-stage-demo-6380810/

I can't imagine anybody who's played a Platinum game watching a video of this and being unsure of what it is. It's Platinum 101, their prime m.o., a stylish beat-em-up where you attack huge mechs and tanks and generally just beat the crap out of things in the best way possible. Platinum is hit or miss for me, and I don't think I generally like them as much as Clover, but this is so clearly their style, done with complete flair. Watching a video, the gameplay is clear as hell, and it's just the number of characters onscreen at once that trips people up.

It seems to play great, and the visuals are top notch. The only thing that worries me is that the touch screen controls will interfere with the action and slow things down, but it looks pretty smooth for being played by somebody who's likely not an expert.

Also, I'm *loving* the scale of the game. Seeing the ground break apart underneath the characters gave me really great Vanquish flashbacks. This game seriously has some of the best art design I've ever seen.

Kamiya is a fantastic developer, and Platinum deserves dynamite sales, but seem to have bad luck with publishers. Nintendo has the resources to promote this more, why aren't they? And I hate to say it, but Hideki and co really need to self-promote more, although I can understand why they'd rather not.

The hilarious part about this thread is that we've seen some trailers and screenshots... but hardly anyone knows how this game is played. How the gameplay works, how the controls are set. You'd have to dig through forums posts from E3 participants and private E3 youtube off-screen videos to get a glimpse.

And then you have some people here go "I tried this at E3... it's awesome... you must buy it if you are a true holy gamer" like this post:

I played the Wonderful 101 just over a week ago at a Nintendo event and it's insanely good. If you don't buy this game then you simply don't like games period.

Nintendo is horrible at marketing their own games. I don't know how the non mainstream/hardcore know a thing about nintendo

the impression I get is that it's a standard platinum action-style game but instead of a single character you control a huge mob of dudes who can change stances (or maybe the formations are actual moves, it's a bit tricky to tell, like I think the pudding counter is just a move instead of a gesture?) and probably get more powerful the more dudes you have

Nintendo did run TV commercials for Lego City in March on Cartoon Network, for what its worth. That game sold well relative to the Wii U install base.

EDIT: The wikipedia page for W101 is hilariously skimpy.

You never know... if he waits 10 years, he might see it ported to future-XBLA :p

I feel like people are just overestimating how radical the game is.

"There are multiple characters, this must be like Pikmin!"

"Oh, there are stylus gesture controls, how does this even work!?"

When really it looks like a typical Platinum beat-em-up with some stylus gestures that control transformations. It's not like people need to know every control nuance for any other new IP that comes out. You generally press buttons to attack and use the stick to move around.

That doesn't mean that they're going to buy it.

Pretty much. No one knows how this game plays or what it's about. Some people still think it's a Pikmin like game or a blend of RTS/Action...

Wonder why they refer to it as a pikmin like game? Probably because they saw it in a Nintendo Direct along with Pikmin media...

Huh? Of course it's a game and you "Generally press buttons" and "use the stick to move around"

Do we know how the battery meters work? No. Do we know if characters have power ups or special moves? No. Do we know if you can jump or block? No. Is there a combo system? IDK. Can characters die in your squad? IDK. How do they get revived? IDK. How do you recruit new squad members? IDK. Can you combine squad member attacks? Can you chain specific attacks? etc...

When I ask questions like these about simple mechanics, the reality is the majority of mainstream gamers don't know how this game plays.

Huh, I seem to remember Terrell telling me Nintendo was gonna market Platinum's games super well... Guess that didn't pan out.

Kid Icarus had a trading card game coming alongside it, some small anime, the character was known and it had two significant E3 showings during the conferences.
(And still it was ,,only'' a million seller, after several months)

It also didn't fit the platform. It was for me and I'm sure many others a pain to play (literally and figuratively). Shame because it is really a great game that is tailor made for the Wiimote and nunchuck. It's hard to say if that affected sales at all.

I actually wonder if W101 will have similar pains with the need to draw shapes on the Gamepad, sometimes multiple times in a battle. Or did they say that is optional and there would be a way to do the formation changes without drawing it?

The sad thing is if I never played it at the Wii U experience last year then I probably wouldn't have given it as much attention as I am now. Nintendo should setup demo kiosks for this and Pikmin 3 soon.

I don't watch Nintendo Direct.

That said, I know next to nothing about this and I have a wii u
Usually there are also GAF threads about everything. So I can't really think about a reason not knowing about this other than preferring ads over NeoGAF/Directs on informing about new games (which I don't recommend).

It's going to be sad how bad this game flops. Or at least I think it's very likely. Not that I own a wii u or anything but I'd feel bad for platinum. Hopefully Nintendo is paying a lot or something.

True... I just don't really think that's something people would choose between personally. I don't really subscribe to the idea that every game competes with GTA.

Personally GTA is the kind of game I'd borrow or play at a friend and buy later down the road if I like it. I loved Vice City but didn't like San Andreas and didn't care that much for IV so it's not a day one purchase anymore.

Kamiya's stuff on the other hand has always been a day one purchase from me and it'll remain that way unless tw101 disappoints me.

If you seen how this game looks and plays and the amount of weird shit flying on the screen/busy looking HUD...you know this game was gonna bomb.

Only question is how big of a bomb are we talking here. Mad World Bomba, Anarchy Reigns bomba, Fuse Bomba?

Nah, some people just love to bitch about Nintendo. It´s just a welcome, and this time legitimate, excuse.

I think Kamiya said you could also use the right stick in the same interview in which 20 hours platime were stated.
