Sony sucks at OS design

I'm not a big fan of XMB either. I wonder if the people who call it functional have ever tried to reply to a message in-game. <.<;

XMB looks great, especially with a cool custom background, and it runs nice and smooth when you're not playing a game, but all the stuff in-game... my God it's bad. Slow, stiff and just argh.

I like was XMB was. As years went on lists grew longer. It could use some consolidation within categories. I think my favorite console OS/UI was Xbox 360's card one.

Mostly likely because you pay for Xbox Live and you still are getting tons of ads.

It would be different if they were obtrusive or you were required to view them. I see them as space filler to make each page more filled out.

I personally have no real problem with either UI. They both have pros and cons. People claiming that ads ruin your experience on the 360 just seems absurd to me.

XMB is nice and fast when you're not playing a game or doing anything intense with the system. But if you're playing a game and want to access the XMB, it's slow and overall frustrating to use.

I prefer the Xbox UI, it's fast, integrated and very easy to use.

True story. PS3 OS is nice as long as it's not in-game or in-app. Xbox 360 has pins too which is nice. Sony needs to step it up for PS4.

ps1 and ps2 was to be expected for the time period.

Ps3 was functional and the minimalist theme was appreciated.

Ps4 seems to be going in right direction.

But Sony is first and foremost a hardware company, where as Microsoft is a software company, you can see the differences in the UI because of the backgrounds.

Vita OS is the best gaming OS I have encountered besides Windows. That makes it better than the 360, PS3, and 3DS. Heck for gaming it is better than all the smartphone OSes.

As others have said, it is so easy to get to the web and still have the game open.

PS3 UI is bad and the OS itself is even worse. Those terrible updates. The awful PS Store design that they never figured out. The in-game UI is so slow. Having to sync trophies. No in-game voice chat. Etc.

By contrast the 360 UI is bad (and has gotten worse over time) but the OS is pretty good.

Vita UI is good and the OS itself is better. It's fast, easy to navigate, and makes sense. It gives me hope for the PS4 UI.

XMB is very good. You can access all the settings fast and without a barrage of graphics and slow windows popping up every turn. Certainly faster and more efficient than the 360 and Wii OS's.

Original XMB has been, by far, the best UI on any console to date. They did pooch it a bit by throwing those ads and store links everywhere though.

Store? Trophy syncing? Game and app updates? Constant firmware updates? Lack of cross-game chat?

Sure there isn't a pay wall, but 360+Live makes all those things not much of a hassle. Good to know Vita OS is awesome, though. Means PS4 should be solid.

They just love that kind of talk over at Microsoft.

When you have ads that spontaneously animate when you have to tile over them, then yes, they do tend to slow everything down, at least on my system.

Yes everything relating to online updates and the PSN store is terrible, but the actual menu layout and settings is excellent. It's too bad the PS4 OS and UI looks like a terrible website...

What is wrong with the PS4 OS design again? The only difference between the PS4 and XBone as far as we can see is where the squares are on screen. XBone fans trying too hard.

I suppose if I had the slow down issue, I'd probably be griping about it. I also don't often tile over them since I'm usually just going to a game or my pinned apps. My worst experience has been the WiiU's. The time it takes to do anything is just ridiculous.

ps4 ui looks nice for once unlike the bland xmb.

What you think of as "bland" was actually fast and functional. I don't give a fuck how an OS looks when you'll probably end up running through it a million times in its lifetime. Every second shaved by making it minimalistic and fast is million times better than some cool layout.

XMB looks good visually but the functionality is just laughable--in particular the settings sub menu which brings up about a million things.

Customization is great and all, but my god

I love the XMB. Simple, clean, fast (except in-game which is lame). No bullshit to be found. The Vita UI was a big step backwards, and the PS4's UI looks like a mess.

I'm always surprised by just how many people feel the XMB was bad and the Vita was a step in the right direction.

I have no issue with the UI of the XMB, it's the functionality of the OS that's the problem. From installing downloads, lack of categorization, slow loading of apps (especially the store), the terrible video controls, the whole thing is just sort of slow and clunky.

I care a lot more about utility than I do about how pretty it is. The 360's interface is uglier, but it works better. If you're talking about how long the OS makes me wait to do what I want to do, there's no contest.

I personally like the XMB. I think its simple and easy to locate things. The only issue that Sony has in my opinion is the PSN store. Its very slow and discombobulated. The OS though is great.

To be fair, when you're arguing about 360 vs PS3 OS speed you're basically arguing if shit is better with corn in it or not. But are unacceptable in regards to speed.

That's part of the reason why I think the Ps4 having less dedicated memory to the OS is overrated--it's just going to guarantee another shit clunker of an OS where comparably speaking the XBO should be much much faster.

I didn't like the vita bubbles at first, but after buying one and putting my games on there I've come to love it.

I also love the PS3 overlay miles more than the Xbox one.

PS1 UI was pretty basic BUT it was the 90s and the first UI i saw on a Console so it was totally ok. PS2 UI i was a bit better, still basic BUT i loved the Clock. The PS2 Crystal Clock with the sounds of the Waves was so great, so so so great. Sometimes i just started the Clock and listened to the Waves. I wished the PS3, before even infos were known, that the PS3 had something similar, like ocean sounds with seagull + wind, some forrest sounds with trees creaking or some summer inspired sounds like crickets, rustling and children playing somewhere far. Well never happened ^-^. The XMB is a great piece of UI. Its clean and fast, well except for large numbers of files, but that could have been solved with multi column list view. It is a pitty it got cluttered with useless option like picture editor, Singstar in the Gamessection, useless TV option (at least their own icon). The OS on the other hand was crippled and not capable of doing much, which again was affecting the XMB UI. I hate the Vita bubble UI. Its ugly.

The pins are so disappointing. It just puts them in a folder on the home screen. A pin should make something appear as a tile on the home screen, but they would take the place of Microsoft's precious ad and recommendation tiles.

The PS3 OS is horrible because it freezes constantly and once you start getting a good amount of content in the menu it takes forever to load.

Don't get me started on the newer apps like the store and youtube. Complete trash.

Wow you may need to get it repaired. my system never freezes unless there is an issue with a game....which is hardly ever.

Is it? I would think deleting files would be solely a function of the OS/file system.
Resistance 3 is the only game that take that long to delete as far as i know, so its more of a issue with Resistance 3, not the general OS. Just out of curiousity, have you not tried to delete any other PS3 game except Resistance 3 to see the difference?

EDIT: I can mention that there has been an installation problem with another game from Insomniac as well. That game was Ratches & Clank: Tools of Destruction,. The problem was that when it tried to install, it said that you didnt have enough space eventhough that wasnt the case. You had to delete about 500MB on the harddrive to fix this problem. Here is an old thread about it: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=337517

I gotta agree the PS4 OS looks terrible. However what is most important for me is functionality, multitasking, speed, social features and etc. We will have to wait to get hands on below we judge those things.

Being an Art Director, I absolutely hate the vita bubbles. If one of my designers presented this UI layout to me I would instantly reject it.

Disagree, 512MB-1GB should be plenty for a minimalist game system OS. More memory for the OS than the PS3 had total should be way more than enough.

640k, etc.

I don't think people want a "minimalist game system OS." Oh, NeoGAF might, but NeoGAF is not the game-buying public. All evidence shows that people use their game systems to do lots of things and they want that list of stuff to increase, not decrease.

Wait, is the PS4 UI just a long list of horizontal squares? It's not categorized at all?

Just another reason to ditch Microsoft, as it really bothers me that 2/3 of the content in the menu is just trying to sell me more shit. It never really bothered me much until the metro upgrade--when the ads get in the way of functionality, we have a big problem.

I think this is a Eastern world thing. Nintendo's menus have never been great and Samsung's (Korea) android skins are garbage.

Western world really has good UIs nailed down between Apple, stock android and (some) microsoft products.
