You're right, it can be turned off, but you lose functionality. According to MS, some games or apps that require it won't function without it.

So my point was that if you don't want to play games or other apps that are unique to the Xbox One experience, why buy one? PS4 will meet all of your needs and then some.

If the issue is price, as I mentioned before MS has many other options like subsidizing the console or bundling it with other services like Cable and Internet.

Because I want to play the X1 exclusives. Yet the exclusives don't require Kinect. However they still want me fork up for it.

Microsoft can shove Kinect up their ass. Not one thing proved Kinect was anything but a novelty. The best it could muster was Dance Central, and that will be another Dance Dance Revolution/Guitar Hero and fizzle out. Not many people want 10 versions of the same dance game.

Microsoft has yet to prove this new Kinect is even worth the mandating in the first place.

25 million units of Just Dance says hi.

The problem with this is Microsoft's answers so far have been to get on PAR with what the PS4 did months ago.

They're not doing anything to be competitive. They think if they can just equal out then people will pick them over the competition.

Realistically though, even if they do this, I don't think it'll be next month. September/October, maybe, but not Gamescom.

Lowering the price is pretty much the 'final' checklist that can be ticked off, and there's still a lot of stuff with lower loss impact that hasn't been ticked.

- Details on indie policy
- XBL Gold 'services'& paywall
- Cheaper Gold
- Potential Windows 'apps' on XB
- Content partnership
- More exclusives, money-hats or internal studios.

If they're going to pull 180s, they'd be doing a lot of the above first before pulling the biggest, most self-damaging decision for the console launch.

Hell, headsets of all things are 'being looked into.' That doesn't inspire confidence, and it sounds like even what is probably a $5 cost item is being scrutinised.

The only games in the launch window that require Kinect to function are Kinect Sports and Disney Fantasia. The only app that requires it so far is Skype. These "won't function" without it...but the same is true on 360. The 360 also has numerous games that are "better with Kinect" but operate just fine without it.

Maybe some people just want to play Forza, Killer Instinct and some 3rd party games? MS, as a business, should never put someone in the position where buying another console is the only option. Choice is good.

Unbundling Kinect is a much, much better business decision than simply eating $100 for the first 10 million consoles, you don't lose that kind of money because someone had a "vision."

Edit: as for the crowd that eats up Kinect every holiday, why would they buy a $500 console with no Kinect Adventures, Dance Central, and no Kinect Sports until spring? When a 360 costs $299 and has all those games available? Has Your Shape or Just Dance even been announced for One yet?

Actually, reading the rumor again, it's not a rumor that they will drop the price. It's just saying it has been discussed.

At the very least they are attempting to correct their mistakes, unlike certain other company that said their fans would pay 600, because you know.. fans.

sony fixed that mistake in time. there was no turning back the clock on the ps3's innards, but a stupid statement wasn't the worst thing they could have done.

Throw out Kinect. Lower to $399. Put in 12 GB RAM and dual GPU. Make Titanfall a full exclusive pack-in. Switch the analog stick position. Buy Naughty Dog's independence from SCE. Done.

Oh yeah? Well, what if Sony drops the price and forges a new publishing partnership with Nintendo, which sees Metroid and a new Mario title coming to PS4?

The fact that they would even consider lowering the price means they are in deep shit. A pre-emptive price drop this soon is just asking for cat calls of "bomba" amongst the world at large. This would be an epic negative megaton brand wise if true. However, it may hurt them in the short term because it shows how weak they have been but long term it is still a very good thing. They can grow out of the negative perception if it sells.

It basically comes down to more powerful hardware versus Kinect when the prices are at parity. I know which one I would choose ...

Of course, if they don't actually drop the price some people are going to get mad because they are now expecting it.

Very true. And that's the problem. They attempted to show us with the stick figure, block man and muscle man demos, but until we see some actual games that implement what the new Kinect can do, it's just waggle 2.0. Microsoft has utterly failed in this area and the burden is on their first and second parties to make it happen. The same can be said about their cloud. No one cares. Show us the games.

Funny how many of these posts have come from juniors who have registered between June 1-3 of this year.

I'm telling you Bish, your exodus brought more out of the wood works. Wouldn't be surprised if many are alts, even shill alts. Another thing many of the juniors have in common is persecution complex posts, which makes me more suspicious.

Yep.

If this trend continues, we'll have two identical consoles in November. How utterly boring.

We had two identical consoles last generation. And three identical consoles before that. The difference is always the software.

I've been yearning for the day that the Japanese oldschool video game giants forge an alliance to destroy the white devil.

I wonder what the other 8+m people who bought Kinect are using it for.
Mine is unplugged in a drawer somewhere because while it was plugged in it kept giving me popup warnings in Ghost Recon Future Soldier, even though I never used Kinect for it.

"Tired? Sore? Why not take a break?"

Every 10 minutes.

I bought it for Forza head tracking, using voice to drill into menus, controlling netflix and for the genius games that were sure to come down the line at some point.

Forza's head tracking was slow and unwieldy, menus never needed voice, Netflix is only a hassle because the 360's controller falls asleep, and Netflix on the 360 sucks now regardless, and those genius games? They never came.

I gave it the benefit of the doubt and got shovelware and gimmicks and pop-up warnings for my troubles. No thank you.

A 400 dollar X1 with Kinect included. Make it happen Microsoft! Thats even more money towards X1 games then. Hope it happens, glad i preordered months back.🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸👍

Of all things I think Microsoft could do, dropping the Kinect would be the worst thing. I may be bias but I LOOOOVE the Kinect. I though it was one of the coolest pieces of tech ever. Yes I recognized the PS Eye came first but the fact that it can recognize bodies and was cooler than holding an inaccurate controller (Wii) , I absolutely welcomed it with open arms.

Kinect 2.0 might be something that a lot of people say they don't want but when you look at the interface of the Xbox 1, its a personal assistant. Which, i think is cool. I use to tell my kinect to start Netflix..or play or what not. Hey, if your not by a controller why not just say it and get it started while you look for it.

I'm definitely not an Xbox fan nor do I like MS but I do feel that when they do have something good at least, it shouldn't be though of as a bad thing. However it can't be turned off if it's still listening for commands. Turn off imo is plug out.

If some of you have your own apartments and pay your electric bill, you know that while its still plugged in, it still is pulling a charge and is "technically" still on. I think it's called Ghost pulling or something like that.

Final checklist is removing kinect.

If they do drop the price with Kinect included regardless of whether this rumor is baseless or whatever then te decision becomes so hard. Do I wait? Can I wait? Wtf do I do?!!

A $399 XBone would still be less value to a person like myself who is interested in raw graphics capabilities. As MS tries to resolve every single issue with the Xbox One in relation to the PS4, this happens to be one they can't change through policy.

I dumped the PS2 for the OG Xbox because of power difference, so my precedent has always been set.

If that's the case just get a good PC and save yourself the trouble. Clearly console exclusives are meaningless to you so you might as well go PC.

Was this site always PS fanboys or did it become this way just after the next gen reveals?

It became "that way" after Microsoft showed its ridiculously anti-consumer colors. Many people who post here that were even Xbox 360 loyalists have been turned against Microsoft due to the policies they intended to implement with their new console. It's not just blind fanboyism, more like looking at what each side offers realizing that the PS4 is a no brainer. I know it can be hard for the hyper-partisan types to see, but many of us GAFers looked at the two consoles objectively.

If they indeed drop the price point to 399 they will be offering Kinect on top of being at the same price point..

The rumors are Gamescom is to focus on Kinect.

In the end I don't see why it matters what was intended. I try to evaluate the product that ends up on store shelves and everything beyond that is irrevelant.

All of the big three console manufacturers have anti-consumer elements.

The reaction of the hardcore gamer is integral (see what I did there?) to gaining positive word of mouth, generating momentum and more importantly, convincing casual friends that a new console is worth buying.

The Wii was an outlier that clicked immediately with casuals. The same folks who tossed it in the closet when they got bored. The WiiU clicked with neither, and is on life support. Do you really believe that the casual market that Kinect is aimed at will spend $500 on a new system? Hardcore gamers spend that money, and Kinect is anathema to that group.

Isn't the Xbox One sold out of preorders, like, everywhere? Seems to be doing pretty well outside of the echo chamber of GAF.

I don't believe there are distinct lines between Hardcore and Casual gamers.

Anecdotally, when I'm alone I'm a "Hardcore" gamer. I sit down on the couch and play all my narrative-driven single player games or boot up a match of Halo. But, when I'm with friends or with my girlfriend we LOVE to play those silly minigame games, or Dance Central or other social games. If I'm going to be spending hundreds of dollars on a games box, I want the box that gives me both of these experiences.

If $399 is true with kinect, I'll buy one at launch! I wasn't planning on buying either this year, but that price plus the strong launch lineup would win me over

I would still buy it only if it had a good exclusive or a good promise for an RPG guy like me. Just not day one.

It's simple to buy a console like that. What matters is whether it will last in my room or just rot in my closet.

Because it shows intent and how easily Microsoft would dump shit on our heads were they in such a position of market dominance and able to do so.
