Wii U Shipped 160k Units Worldwide Between April and June 2013

Trying to decide if I should keep mine literally just for Smash Bros. That's the only game on the horizon I care about. Not even 3D World or Mario Kart is exciting me.

Should I just cut my losses now?

  • Q4 2012 - 3 million WiiU's sold after launch
  • Ever since then - less than 100k units sold per month, worldwide
  • General population is viewing WiiU as an expensive Wii accessory, performance level is way below of nextgen consoles that were shown at E3, in some cases currentgen ports have performance issues.
  • The most favourably reviewed exclusive 3rd party game ZombieU was described as their creators as "failure, nowhere near success"
  • EA announced that they are effectively dropping support ["no games in production as of now"]
  • Ubisoft boss stated that he will decide level of UBI support after this Christmas season
  • Retailers from all around the world are slashing prices themselves in effort to clear launch stocks, some retailers are stopping sales.
  • Several games that were announced for WiiU were canceled or heavily delayed, most notably Alien Colonial Marines, Rayman Legends and Deus Ex Human Revolution Dir.Cut
  • April-June WiiU retail game releases were almost non existent

If this is not telling Iwata that his console is in DEEP SHIT, i dont know what will. He needs to slash the price hard, give everyone free Wind Waker HD and start giving everyone at least 2 free games per month [same as X360].

Trade in price for the Wii U here in the UK is less than a hundred quid. I have no choice but to keep mine, as selling it would make me feel horrendously ripped off.

As others have been pointing out, the problem with people saying "You can't judge yet! Wait for...." is that there is only so much physical room in a B&M shop. It's not just that the XB1 and the PS4 will take up a lot of advertising and mindshare, it's that stores such as Gamestop, Target and Walmart have to find somewhere to put the consoles, the games and the accessories. And if I'm in charge of making that decision, I damn well know where that space is coming from.

So you already have a console that has the stench of death on it, and now it'll be difficult to find in a store. Unless Nintendo can demonstrate to these retailers why they should make the effort pushing the Wii U when all it's done for them is gather dust on their shelves, pretty soon it'll be only those who are actively hunting it down who will be able to find it. And at that point it doesn't matter how many games are out, the general market will never know about them and the system is dead.

I'll be very interested to see what the average Gamestop will look like this November. I wouldn't be shocked if the Wii has a more prominent placement and more shelf space than the Wii U.

Once again, Nintendo depending on Nintendo Directs and the Miiverse to get the word out is preaching to the choir. That's not the audience they need to reach.

Yep. That's what I've been saying. Once the new HD twins show up it's over for WiiU.

Aw come on man.

Don't insult the Dreamcast like that.

lol this is actually true right now.

I'm not necessarily happy about this but this bodes well for me getting one for a little cheaper come next year. They need to up their internal storage though. I don't want to tether an external HDD. Give me a 500GB internal HDD.

Out of 160k shipped units, how many have they sold?

60,000 Wii U units shipped in the USA
90,000 Wii U units shipped in Japan
10,000 Wii U units shipped elsewhere

~112,000 Wii U units sold in the USA
~94,907 Wii U units sold in Japan
~52,000 (estimated) Wii U units sold in Europe

As aforementioned, the "sold" figures are from existing stock.

Technically, that won't happen.

There is literally no room left in the Wii U for a hard drive, and there's not a chance in hell Nintendo will offer more than the current amount of flash storage.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Can it be saved?

A major problem is that 2012-2014 is, under any circumstances, the only time window where the Wii U could have expected to get any third party support since this is the window in which developers are still focused on developing games for current-gen.

After that focus will shift to next-gen technology and production, meaning that bringing a game to Wii U will be even more cumbersome and, hence, less likely.

They already missed the time window with the theoretically best possible 3rd party support.

Personally, I am totally fine with Nintendo games only since this is the reason I bought the console. But overall, I don't see any future for it beyond being a 2nd console for most people.

This should highlight Nintendo's incompetence at managing software development:

Nintendo has spent 2+ years developing Wii U Fit when it takes an iOS/Android developer a couple weeks to come up with something similar for free.

Until Nintendo can compete with the fast pace of the appstore and google play market, they need to step out of the casual realm and concede that their model of game development is not fit for the casual gaming market. Once they do this and focus on newer IPs that inspire gamers, their sales will increase.

I have to agree here- Nintendo managed to tap into casual gamers (mostly by accident), and by 2010 had completely missed the motivation behind the market they were plugged into. They had 2 paths, but they chose neither:

1) Become a hardcore gaming platform and compete with Sony & MS
2) Become some kind of casual "console of choice" and compete with iOS & Android

Moms and Grandmas were interested in the Wii because it was something they found fun and engaging... dads and kids were ecstatic that the rest of the family were finally playing games, too, and in my mind the latter are the ones who spurred the Wii attach rate.

Full on casuals (mom and kids) moved to the finicky, here-today-gone-tomorrow world of mobile, hardcore gamers never really left PS360/PC, and when Nintendo decided to try to ride the fence with WiiU they missed

I didn't say that. I said the wii sold to people with no interest in PLAYING games.

stay with me here.

buying wii sports or wii fit to enjoy the novelty of motion controls and waggle isn't really an audience who likes playing games. this is an audience attracted to the novelty of motion control. there's a big difference. People who fire up a tablet to fool around with songpop or candy crush for 15 minutes and nothing else aren't really an audience who like playing games either. it's simply the most convenient way to waste time for 15 minutes.

people who enjoy playing games *gasp* keep buying them! This didn't happen with the wii.

The Wii's attach rate is only respectable because nearly all of it's software was sold up until 2010...then sales collapsed and their audience got tired of playing games. This has never happened to any other console in gaming history, and didn't happen to their two closest competitors.

Yep. Except I'd add that the audience got tired of playing casual games on a console. They still play Candy Crush and Pokemon, just elsewhere.

Anecdotal, but search craigslist for "Wii": nearly all of the bundles I see out there have Wii Sports (family gateway drug), one or two dance games (mom & kids), three or four racing and adventure games (dad and kids) and maybe a shooter (dad). The Wii was never really a go-to device in the house, it was a "oh, I guess we could buy a new game" thing

Anectodal evidence and all, but this is already the case for a lot of GS locations that I frequent. At my closest one, early this month, the WiiU section was at the front of the store right by the entrance. When I stopped by again yesterday, the whole section had been shrunk and moved all the way to the back right next to the Wii games, with their mobile/tablet section taking it's place.

The storm of the holiday is going to be too much for the Wii U to take. Maybe they should just take the Wii off of the market totally, drop the price of this thing (like hard) and pray to god Santa is being cheap this year and just wants to buy the kiddos the least pricy system?

No that won't work either

These numbers are piss poor but not surprising. Nintendo has no marketing presence at all (not just to the greater masses but at all) for the Wii U and even the 3DS. There is no commercial out there that simply advertises the 3DS as a piece of hardware to buy and listing off the games available for it. So it's not surprising at all that sales for the 3DS are down. The sales of the Wii U are of Nintendo's own making. There are no games to drive the system even if there are a few enjoyable games. There is no advertising to drive attention to the system. There is no significant communication with the gaming media to drive attention to the system on a regular basis. The games they are offering in the Fall are likely games that people at large do not want as well.

I'm pissed in the end. Pissed because I fell for what they offered so early on. Due to having invested so much money in the hardware and it looks from my point of view that Nintendo simply isn't doing enough to turn things around so my investment isn't a complete waste as far as the Wii U is concerned. I'm fine on the 3DS front but they clearly should be doing things better.

The Wii is currently outselling the Wii U, so retailers would likely rather keep the Wii and ditch the Wii U.

somewhere in an alternate universe, Sony learned their lesson about the PS3 and released a $500 cell powered vita that looks visually worse than 3ds.

Now's the time to release the Ambassador program for early adopters while the iron is hot!
In a way, the limited-time 30 cent Virtual Console downloads and retailer price drops functioned as a sort of stealth Ambassador program. But with no imminent release of franchise titles like the 3DS got with Mario Kart 7 and 3D Land, it didn't make much difference.

I think one of the biggest problem for the WiiU is the overlap with the 3DS, I can find all the Nintendo major franchises on the handheld for a way better price: Mario 2D, Mario 3D, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, even Smash Bros will be on the 3DS. And the third party is better too. There was a big distinction between N64 and GB, GameCube and GBAdvance, Wii and NDS, while WiiU and 3DS softwares are too similar.

If all else fails, drag Vita into WiiU's failure.

I'm being half serious. Every time I see some kind of WiiU criticism about sales, Vita gets dragged in.

Not sure what the point is but I know as far as consoles go, WiiU is floundering terribly.

i feel that's an argument to be made after we see sales figures for wii u games. i agree that nintendo is competing against themselves to a point, though.

Yep. Its all over. Shutter the windows. Close the doors.

Iwata and Miyamoto murder Reggie and then commit seppuku.

oh gaf,,,,you never change.

Not that.....
They need to rethink their strategy. You can't go vs Bear (Sony & MS) with BB gun on hunting.....you need big guns. They have luck with last console (Wii) because of totally brilliant idea with motion controller .But now they have nothing to impress in field of innovation.

Nintendo is my first love & I sincerely wish they take No1 spot on charts , so they can recover & make one BADASS console next generation.
Developers don't care anymore about making games on WiiU , when they have nice cutoff on developing cost for Xbox-one , Ps4 & PC.
Easy porting = big money.

Have you seen this image? Definitely reinforces your point.

It is absolutely ridiculous. I have half a mind to call up NCL's Kyoto office and complain.

12.45 million through March, when the Wii U only managed 0.16 on barren stock refreshers, is literally impossible to achieve (for the console).

Does Nintendo really expect us to believe that the Wii U will actually ship 8.84 million consoles in NINE MONTHS?
I think another quarter of these level of shipments (which I fully expect) will lead to a forecast revision. To leave the forecast as is would imply they expect 8.5M+ systems to ship in 6 months from Oct-Mar.

No one would buy that nonsense.

Is the European number an extrapolation of French sell-through?

Point is if sony "learned their lesson" the same way nintendo did with the 3ds launch, then the vita would still be powered by cell and expensive and underpowered, to be clear, im basically saying "nintendo learned nothing"

Vita is screwed too but I guess my statement might have come off as bitter. It's hard to articulate and just say "don't bring Vita up in WiiU's failings".

I don't disagree with your sentiments.

I knew the Wii U was not popular at all, but i didn't know it was this bad. Some(most?) consoles sells more than 160k in one month in the US alone usually... wow. You really screwed up Nintendo.

Think it's still too soon to say it'll be like the dreamcast. I suspect price cuts + Smash, next mainline mario, zelda, etc come out, it will still do decent sales.

Would buy a bundle with an elite Wii U and game for $199. :p

Exactly. That's why Nintendo would say "Hey, send us back all of those Wii consoles"

If the Wii Mini becomes the only SKU available, they could easily kill the Wii. No one wants that gimped excuse for a console...

They named the system the Wii U and still haven't put out a new HD version of Wii Sports. That made sense.

They put out an touchscreen controller without multitouch capability in 2012.
That made sense,

They claimed they wanted to pull in 3rd parties once more and then put out a system without enough power to compete against the competition releasing a year later. That made sense.

The list goes on.

Everyone seems to undertand the problems except stubborn Nintendo, they need to wake up fast or its over. This is not a repeat of the 3ds situation from a couple of years ago... the 3ds did not have the competition the Wii U does. The clock is ticking, they have until 1/1/14 to turn it around.
