Killer is Dead (Suda51/Grasshopper) announced for the PS3/360

Day one on everything Suda's name is slapped onto. Love the concept art coming out of this.

Shadows was such a blast to play and the soundtrack stands as one of my favorites of all time in the industry now. Can't wait for Lollipop Chainsaw, but I'm most intrigued by this one because it does give me some Killer 7 vibes.

such a shame that the dude isn't directing at the moment though, what the hell....

Disliked Killer 7 and hated NMH, so Suda not directing sounds pretty awesome to me if it's anything like SOTD.

not to take too much credit away from suda/grasshopper but 8-4 had a huge part in SOTD's story and dialog being so good

it's just that I don't wanna see this game selling 24,000 on first week like SOTD :(

not to be a hater; but even with all the hype; SOTD; grasshopper/suda/shinji names attached to the title; did not move units. Which in itself is mind boggling - you can attribute it to EA or the appeal factor; so I just don't see the suda/grasshopper brand existing/pushing past a "very niche/non existent" market - when even the target audience won't buy the game; its quite telling.

Those weren't really the highlights for me. The gameplay, art style, and environments were.

story? what story? The story would be suda+grasshopper. SOTD had a terrible story.

8-4 did the translation work.

John Ricciardi (cofounder, 8-4): A lot of the banter between Garcia and Johnson, all of the posters and storybooks and such — that was all new stuff from us, based on discussions we had with Grasshopper. It was very much a collaborative process; we worked together pretty closely over a period of about three months.

I wonder why Suda is making these games that are pretty much just No More Heroes instead of No More Heroes 3. I'm not really complaining, but it is interesting.

Probably because nobody wants to pay to produce No More Heroes 3, so he makes a carbon copy of it that is easier to sell to publishers.

Kinda like how Seth McFarlane came up with American Dad after Family Guy was cancelled.

I really hope Suda can get back on track with Killer is Dead and Lollipop Chainsaw. I really haven't liked his output post NMH1.

You realize this makes absolutely no sense...they're making games with similar gameplay, themes, etc. It would make more sense to attach it to a somewhat established franchise than a new IP

Anyway, Suda did say he was waiting for the next Nintendo console for NMH3

I just hope this takes a more serious tone than that of NMH, Shadows of the Damned and Lollipop Chainsaw. Love that he is making these games but I'm hoping for a more Killer 7 vibe with better gameplay

It doesn't look like Lollipop Chainsaw is going to be anywhere near the level of Killer7 or some of the better Grasshopper games. Looks more like "just" a fun game without that much depth. Killer is Dead sounds promising though, but we can only hope. Hard to make even assumptions at this point.

I see your point, but We can change results as fans too. New IPs haven't done so well this gen anyways, that's another reason. Suda is creating new characters, worlds, controls, something Nintendo keeps away from and is benefiting with.

Sales say that people are allergic to New IPs, which is why trilogies/Sequels are hot. I KNOW IT SOUNDS RETARDED, but it's not creativity that sells in this 7th gen industry, it's familiarity(Arcade/Sequel/HD Remakes/Shooter). Making a New IP is risky, and when you get an audience to accept that character and not be hated for it, that is a success in itself!!! This is a hypothesis/opinion, not a fact. I personally want Suda51 to keep making new stuff as opposed to sequels while other studios are just working towards the next graphical upgrade.

sidenote: Shadows Of The Damned had an interesting colour palette btw, only rivalled by the next-gen UE4 Samaritan Unreal demo (Of Course the Crysis Engine pwns everything on colour so far)
"New lighting techniques are being pulled out of the woodwork to keep this sense of trepidation going, and the artistic style is being deliberately designed to evoke a suitable level of creepiness."

Can't wait to see what KiD has in store, might be a Sin-City colour vibe >_<

Yeah things went downwards a bit.

Suda needs to bring back the style and atmosphere from Silver Case.. badly. As much as I still enjoy Grasshopper's games, I really hope Lollypop Chainsaw is the last "dumb humor" title from them for a while. Console gaming needs more thought-provoking games. Suda is one of the few guys left around that I feel can still deliver that.

Any word on whether the Japanese version that releases tomorrow will have English language or subtitle options?

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/666508-killer-is-dead/66864730

* English and Japanese voices available from the main menu
* Plays as it looks, aka similar to NMH
* Those who are interested in trophies, they seem to be easy at this point.
* Fast and easy to get in (the opening cutscene/gameplay lasts under a minute lol),
* Exactly what you expect, Killer 7 style + sexual appeal vamped up in every which way (Mika has some comedy moments though),
* Premium Edition comes with a double sleeve cover with a code for "Beauty and the Night Beast" and Bikini costumes for Betty/Natalia/ Scarlet and Koharu,

Here's a stream with a guy playing KiD:

http://www.twitch.tv/moruid

Combat looks very shallow with not a lot of variety so far. Guess it's another case of style over substance :(

Watching the playthrough on youtube. The game looks pretty polished and the story seems to be interesting.

Hey man if the combat is at least as deep as in NHM then that's fine with me. It was fun, especially with the wrestling moves, and based on the trailers, the fighting looks more polished and a bit more varied than in NHM.

I've been posting my impressions on gamefaqs as I've already finished it; picked up the game on Wednesday from local import shop.

Took 9 hrs to finish 95% of the game. Then another 4 hours on very hard.

I did not enjoy NMH because of the controls (on wii then ps3/360). I never got around to playing Killer 7 or Lollipop.

But average game, really like the graphics, which are typical Suda 51. I did have some shitty screen tearing, but that was very early on in the game.

The hardest part about the combat mechanics is getting timing down for the counter/dodging. It isn't as lenient as Bayonetta or MGR. Some bosses will put you in some really annoying stun lock, which require you to mash your left stick. Don't expect to do a lot of weapon switching or anything. I only used one of the sub weapons for 90% of the game when required. Really useful for, I think two of the bosses as it does huge chunks, also for stunning bigger enemies and groups of enemies.

Gigolo missions are just a waste of time. I do suggest you go through it at least twice just to get the sub weapons; do it successfully three times if you want to get the trophies. The cat glasses (that let you see through their clothes and what gifts they like) is just a grind to get if you haven't unlocked the trial missions; since redoing them successfully only gets you 50 points...and you need 1000 to get the cat glasses.

About the cat glasses and Scarlett
the cat glasses will break if you ruin your date with the other two girls; so you'll have to grind those 1000 points again to get new glasses!

I don't know what to say about the game, I enjoyed Bayonetta more. Probably a shit comparison anyway.

I'll post more impressions when I get the game back from a friend. I just don't have any desire or reason to continue playing it as the rest of the trophies/achievements I need are just stuff I don't want to bother with (AAA everything, etc)

Thanks for the impressions. I'd like to hear from someone who enjoyed NMH and played Killer7/Shadows of the Damned/Lollipop as well, just for comparison.

I'm really interested in the plot and seeing if it has any throwbacks to previous games, but I'm thankful for the impression. I'm going to make things even harder for myself and swap guns every two seconds

Been playing this game, and it is a technical mess. Constant screen tearing and it can become disorienting even just moving the camera around.

Very interesting design and theme throughout the game for those who likes pop culture, grindhouse related things.

Combat is what I would call godhand lite. The system is dependent on get up close to the enemy/boss and from there you can execute different combinations/skills while dodging or guarding incoming attacks. Doing this well allows you to unleash more stylish attacks or execution moves. It's not a bad system, but nothing extraordinary.

If a patch comes and fixes the technical issues with this game, it is a solid purchase for Suda fans.

Saw a playthrough on youtube and it clocked 6 hours and 15 minutes seducing 7 times the ladies and dying 10 times (I like the game gives you stats of everything like that )
