Sony makes fantastic sounding earbuds. Even if their headset doesn't look like it's "all that", I have no doubt that the sound quality is going to be great.

I just can't see how anyone who truly cares about games and the future of the industry could support this console...no matter how much they change. They showed their true colors and started backtracking because they were getting completely decimated in preorders. They don't care about the gamer at all. Sure, you'll have decent exclusives for a while, but then they'll completely abandon that in the end just like they did with 360. I can't support them based on principle alone.

This ^. I agree sir. Im a multi console guy this gen. On principle alone Im not supporting MS next gen. MS are luring kids with candy again! Dont get into the car, kids! Just dont!

MS been putting out some very fine boxes lately.

Yup, they've really considered branding an image. They recently hired a talented designer for the Xbox division: Minimally Minimal - The Next Microsoft

MSFT.jpg

He hints at a secret project sponsored from MS, I'm still curious of what that is.

Really pleased to see they're including the headset. It would have been a crying shame for them not to. Especially at $500.

I don't know about that. That XONE headset seems like if I stare at it too hard, it would snap. I'd rather MS just sell a quality headset separately that was actually worth what they charged.

They can't reverse headsets already in the box. Now they could stop putting headsets in later runs but there is no point worrying about that at this stage. Also there is nothing wrong with a manufacturer catering to a group of consumers.

They definitely could pull headsets at a later date, and probably will since they clearly didn't think they were important just a few months ago.

Also, you aren't catering to a group of consumers if you need consumer complaints and competitor moves to guide you down the path. Then you're pandering. They've shown no insight into providing consumers what they want without being forced into it, and last generation we saw that if they already got you on their platform your complaints aren't particularly valid to them.

Why are you acting like we're being signed into a blood oath contract? The beauty of this is that people can drop the damn thing like a hot coal if they don't like what they're going through.
It's a $500 commitment plus controllers, games, XBL Gold, etc.. For most people that isn't the kind of financial commitment you'd willingly just drop.

Also, if you factually knew that in three years MS would do literally zero to service you as a customer would you still buy the system? Probably not. So what level of probability is the tipping point? Because right now I'd say MS are a fair bit better than 50/50 to flip back on the vast majority of these "pro consumer" choices or find an entirely new batch of anti-consumer strategies to push.

And no, changing things for the better is never a bad thing. It's hilarious how backwards MS was in the first before this reversal phase, but this is good news.
A company changing things for short term gains when they clearly don't get what their consumers want is not guaranteed to result in something better, since if said company gets away with anti-consumer bullshit thanks to some 180 degree pandering we'll see that kind of thinking dominate the industry as opposed to real customer service.

Hence why now both PS4 and XB1 have pay to play online. Consumers swallowed the XBL hook and now it's industry standard to pay for online play.

Seeings how MS originally planned to walk us down a similar line regarding online DRM and restricted game ownership I don't quite see why we'd trust them to not find something else as bad for the industry as the online playwall they've already brought us.

Microsoft is not some chum of mine to get emotionally attached to. They're a company that makes a product that plays games that I want to play. I enjoy my product, and if they dare to implement any of the previous shit they did before, I'll drop them like a brick. Ties severed. It's a business relationship period.

Don't be dramatic.

Great news for X1 fans, the headset looks better than PS4 headset. This is good, negative backlash seems to make MS budge, we need more negative backlash on apps like Netflix being behind a paywall too.

I'm almost certain that 65% of people who plan on buying the console don't even realize that Kinect is required for the console to function and that internet is required to activate the console.

And I'm almost certain that 95% of those 65% won't even realize it long after they purchase the console anyway because it's likely they already planned on being connected to the internet for multiplayer and will also have the Kinect plugged in to try out the console's main accessory.

I think a lot of GAF is seriously overestimating the common person's outrage over these types of things. For us it might seem like a crime against gamers but the average person is going to see it as a non-issue.

Man, that could be the sexiest console box design. I was gonna wait until next year to get both consoles, but I'm tempted to get a x1 at launch.
I was actually quite unimpressed with it. My favorite to this day is the PS2 box, with the 360 following fairly closely. The XB1 box is kind of dull and doesn't really catch the eye IMO. I'm not all that impressed with the PS4 box either, but it seems more eye catching to me.

While the headset looks cheap, at least it's 3.5mm jack, which means that any regular headset one may already have lying around home is compatible with PS4.

MS's main issue was that they were using proprietary jacks for headsets without including adapters. There was 'no alternative' other than MS's own.

Yeah. Thats the first time I have seen the PS4 box.

Neither looks great. But damn the PS4 ON the Box looks fantastic. Dat Blue LED.

Might be a bit off-topic, but anyone thinks that MS could lower X1's price for the US only while maintaining the price everywhere else? Since US is their primary market I would consider this at least plausible.

I like the way the XBO's box looks, but it really needs a splash of color. Maybe a green stripe down the middle where the blacks are slightly different or something. Or make the logo green.

Something!

Also any USB or Bluetooth headsets.

I don't get the hate for this either. I don't really like what Microsoft has shown, and it's great that consumer backlash is causing them to change their stance on many things. But this is nothing but a good thing for the consumer and a good thing for keeping a robust online community via voice chat.

It's not like this was the thing that is going to help or hurt sales. That mandatory Kinect and $100 for weaker hardware and less AAA first party studios and unproven indie support and f2p multiplayer behind paywall and apps behind paywall is still lingering.

But this specific thing is great for consumers.
That list just doesn't add up for me. Kinect adds the money to the box obviously, pay wall isn't a big deal at all judging by the 360, and indie support is BOUND to be on Live. :/

Pending a price drop, that and the cpu power is the only thing keeping the ps4 above the One.

The way I see it is if they do try to screw me over in the future, at least I'll get my enjoyment's worth in those years before reselling the damn thing. I'll make a decent amount of money back and it would've been worth it. And we'll have to agree to disagree on flipping back to their old ways. I don't see them going back to all that BS at all, at least not for the Xbone. They'd walk right back into a fiery shitstorm and they know it.

Having the Xbox set against a balck background is not doing too many favours.

What new unique PSN features have we heard about so far? What resolution and framerate does it record videos in? Is the trophy system doing anything unique on the PS4, or is it utilized the same as in the PS3 and Vita? Is PS Home back? Have we seen a live UI demo (we saw one from Wired for the XB1 back in May, and it was also shown on the MS show floor by an NFL guy, though we don't know 100% whether it was live)? We still don't even know a lot about the UI. Will it have voice commands? Is content separated into categories like PS3 or randomly like Vita? Will the Playstation app include the second screen functionality for games like Smartglass, or will every game that utilizes a second screen require it's own game app? We haven't seen promotional videos for their accessories, and we definitely haven't seen an unboxing.

Well at that point it is too late, they already have your money.

This is brilliant of Microsoft to come out with a video like this. Everything looks great, but I don't care for the touch sensitive power button. Hated that crap on the phat ps3.

Either way, as good as the 180 is looking now, I'm still pro-ps4. I prefer everything about that console in all aspects. Prices, controller and most especially, the exclusive games. (plus, you think i'm gonna play v13 and kh3 on an xbox? lulz)
If you buy One, you know you can, right?

Exactly, it needs some kind of splash of color. Being all black like isn't going to make it stand out on a store shelf, which is what these things should be designed to do. The PS4's on the other hand is bright, and busy, which is really going to pop out at people.

Hopefully they somehow figure out a way to make opting in to that previous system possible. I really would like to purchase a retail disc, install it, be able to swap between other retail purchased games using the fast swapping capabilities of the system, and also sell my discs back to Gamestop. Would have worked out quite well for me and my current uses, and I can fully understand why some people would loath such a thing, but opting in would fix it...but also introduce a whole slew of other problems. Perhaps to solve this whole thing, we get the government involved to allow reselling of digital content. That would be great, but not going to happen during the lifespan of this gen.

Indeed. Been saying this since the X1 reveal. I still think that the number of mass market consumers who give it a look BECAUSE of TV control/Kinect outweighs those who will "boycott on principle" by a wide margin. And so does MS and their market research, or else they never would have gone down this path.

Gonna be a fascinating 2014/2015 to watch the industry and how this all shakes down.

Why does it seem like MS is further ahead with this stuff than Sony? We have way more information about new XB1 XBL features, more details about how their system works, we already have marketing videos for accessories, and now we even have an unboxing.

I know, it's embarrassing how much MS keeps reversing their policies, but it still seems as though we know way more about the console than the PS4.

You have officially gone bonkers

I am actually super excited for the Xbox One. But I waited too long and now I can't preorder the Day One Edition on Amazon or Best Buy. That, combined with my huge backlog of 360 games that I want to finish... I may decide to hold off getting XB1 for a while

The packaging looks nice.
I'd like to see an unboxing video someday without the host refering to the device as " this bad boy".
