Avatar: The Last Airbender was so good, I still kind of can't figure out how it got made.
It's a shame Legend of Korra fell apart in the last third of its season.
Was talking about the cartoons through the context of American vs Japanese.
I know the American public had little to do with their popularity domestically. Otaku culture of Japan is to blame for that
Well you can look forward to The Wind Rises. Some of the best animation out there.
Gundam? Cowboy Bebops? Gurren Lagann? Tiger & Bunny?
Some people aren't aware that a lot of anime are adaptations of manga. Cartoons aren't exactly based on already written material, or at least the adaptation isn't similar to the kind of close adaptations you get with anime.
Yeah that's why I said anime is too moe these days. I'm only watching few animes now and the last one I enjoyed was Suisei no Gargantia and mostly because the orignal girls designs was made by one of my fav japanese artists, but this do not make american cartoons better, I miss the 90s times, I don't have kids but I really don't see what kind of cartoons/anime would they see... Nowadays anime seems bleh and seems like companies are only interested into sell merchandise, animation and stories are too simple looks like flash cartoons or mentally handicapped kids. There is plenty of generic anime stuff as well, and there is unique American stuff Maybe you should go out and find different kinds of American animation
It´s much better from all sides. Animation, plot, comedy, action, dialog. TMNT is truly incredible, and i am still amazed how the show retained high quality throughout the first season.
I've been told this is "Cry Like a Bitch" tier.
I'd like to, yes.
It's a great film by a very talented film maker.I've been told this is "Cry Like a Bitch" tier.
Did someone say "Kingdom"?

Tiger and bunny and ano hana were great and those were recent.
Recently though american animation shows are killer, Korra, regular show, AT, The venture bros, young justice and gravity fall are amazing.
But... it's still (mostly) hand-drawn. And there's still some great animation out there, even in TV shows.I was mainly into anime because of the awesome hand drawn animation.
Not helping!Did someone say "Kingdom"?
LOL This looks so dumb.

what the hell is this garbage
The Japanese equivalent to the much lauded current TMNT. It's just that good.
Even then you began to get Japanese shows based on what the US public was supposed to like (chosed by the likes of 4kids or whoever held the rights at the time).
And seriously otakus are absolutely not responsible for the fact that DBZ or Sailor Moon were popular, that notion is even too crazy to even contemplate really.
If you base your understanding of Japanese anime on that, you have absolutely no knowledge of it at all.
It's basically like some guy in Taiwan judging the US filmmaking industry based on summer block busters.
I'm fairly sure there's more to the US film industry than Transformers...
And as far as comparisons goes what's up with comparison stuffs from the 80's/90's with stuffs like Narutaru that is barely 10 years old!
I know DBZ is great and all but can't we lay that to rest and talk about better, newer stuffs?
I'm pretty bias against anime, I'll admit it. My main beef with a lot of it is the lack of originality in the animation itself. Everyone has the same triangle shaped face with giant goo goo eyes and tiny mouth. I could show you 10 faces from 10 different animes and they all look the same. The only way to tell them apart is by whatever hairstyle they have. They use too many similar, what I like to call, "anime memes." How many times must I watch a glass of ice do the shifting, melting ice thing? How many times must I watch their face go from normal to completely zany, goofy face with X's or snot coming out of the nose with the same sound effects accentuating them? And some reason a lot of anime have this insistence on putting a young female in some awkward sexually suggestive situation that's quite frankly unsettling to me.
I dunno GAF, please tell me I'm wrong or that I've been watching the wrong anime because all of this just ruins it for me every time. It's like all the anime studios have some handbook or checklist they go down to make sure they have included every single generic anime staple and it just drags their originality down.
Going on to American cartoons, at the very least they seem to all be drastically different from each other in terms of art style and comedy. I haven't seen much of the new crap, but all the big popular series I know of have wildly different styles that resonates much more with me.
That all being said, I've very obviously been away from the anime scene for a long time.
Ok, I will give you a 5er.
I wasn't impressed. Moreover, I feel...disappointed.
Black Dynamite is stellar animation quality...but, writing wise it's not as clever as the Boondocks. I know it's Blaxplotation, but compared to the film I think it handles it...in a way I don't like it lol
Now, Superjail and Venture Bros is super top notch quality.
I wasn't impressed. Moreover, I feel...disappointed.
I am very disappointed this isn't in there somewhere.

Anime is more conservative with its style, yes (I don't see this as a bad thing at all, though), but to suggest that every show looks the same is absolutely ridiculous.
No, Dragon Ball Z and Yu Yu Hakusho were adapted from popular long-running Shounen Jump manga for little boys, and Sailor Moon was a yearly magical girl show designed to sell merchandise to little girls. "Otaku culture" had nothing to do with their success. In the early 90s when they aired in Japan, the anime otaku market centered on OVAs, not TV shows.
I was using points of reference to things the OP would know as an American. In my first post I put DBZ into the label as a terrible show, which it was/is.
Narutaru was an example of an action anime, that was good, being canned after a season for not being money makers the other three anime I mentioned were. That served an example to show how hard it is to make a good anime since most anime shows pander to the lowest common denominator to suction precious ¥ out of the pockets of Otaku.

And the girls who watched sailormoon grew up to be housewives, and the boys who watched terrible things like DBZ and Yu Yu Hakusho(which was actually a decent Manga before becoming animated garbage) in largne numbers financed, with their money, the lowest common denominator we see in Anime now.
Don't worry: you weren't supposed to be.I wasn't impressed.
The other series you mentioned were meant for kids. Not quite the same target.Narutaru was an example of an action anime, that was good, being canned after a season for not being money makers the other three anime I mentioned were.
Wat. Er... No. Your example certainly didn't do that. That served an example to show how hard it is to make a good anime since most anime shows pander to the lowest common denominator to suction precious ¥ out of the pockets of Otaku.

Nichijou is on of the most intelligent experimental sketch comedy shows I have ever seen PERIOD, don't even bother with the fact that it's animated. That show is "Kids in the Hall" "Upright Citizens Brigade" level of brilliant.

Agree.
You all want another good one with an off the wall art style.

Why aren't you watching this OP. The English dub, watch it NOW.
My bro, they took 2 full seasons worth of stuff and crammed it into 10 episodes. The romance angle fucking destroyed that show, and they were in a rush to get so much stuff in.
Name me one American cartoon of recent times that can do cute girls doing cute things better than anime? .
