Warframe on PS4 is a timed exclusive.

Is Sony actually paying anything for timed exclusivity for this game? If so, Sony would have been better off spending that money on something else.

Of course there was, it all depends on whether the studio wants to port them to the Xbone in the first place. If they don't then it's not going to happen, is it?

Yeah, I was making a dumb generalization without thinking through what I wrote.

I forget that there's a lot of other inhibiting factors like inability of devs to commit porting resources, relationship with MS/Sony, cross-platform, etc and strictly assumed that all self-publishing devs would want to get more audience anyway.

Based on interviews with the developers, it didn't have anything to do with paying for exclusive time, it had to do with Sony's willingness to allow for Digital Extremes's patching schedule when MS wasn't. Apparently that's changed, but clearly the PS4 is still the priority while the XBO version will be hammered out after the fact.

I doubt any exclusive F2P game on the PS4 involved money changing hands, timed or otherwise.
Makes sense, thanks for the heads up.

Sony rarely pays for timed exclusive content. Most of the time, unless they publish it, you should assume it's timed. Same for MS and Nintendo. MS is known for their moneyhats though, and they don't seem to care if it's just timed.

Some of these games will be timed exclusive just because Microsoft had shit indie policies.

I think people (including IGN and the devs for warframe) are using the phrase "timed exclusive" too loosely.

If a game was moneyhatted to stay off a competitors console for a period of time. That is timed exclusive.

If a game simply has not been announced for a competitor's console and there is nothing outside of the competitor's policies preventing that from happening, that is NOT "timed exclusive".

Because the only thing "timed" about it is when the developers choose to create it and not when a contract runs out.

What's unclear is which situation this is. Did Sony moneyhat anything with a contract in place or was this simply due to the policy shift?

PC version is pretty damn good, so as long as they keep the console version updated too, it should go well. As for the timed exclusive...it would be silly not to get it on more formats.

The timed exclusivity is probably in exchange for marketing, which'll include things like appearing in Sony's booth at Gamescom/PAX.

Just wanted to say that only because it is only a 3 month exclusivity doesn't mean it will release on Xbox One by February since probably development haven't even started going by devs previous comments.

Played it for an hour or so on PC. Not sure if this game is something to get excited about.

I've been playing it practically nonstop the last two days, but I specifically went into it looking for something grindy and time-consuming. I initially thought I'd compare it to ME3 multiplayer but the way I've got my character set up now it's like Space Marine + Vanquish.

But yeah if you want to play this as a 100% free title I hope you like dealing with getting tons of rare drops +3.5 day crafting times minimum just for one new frame. I got the $40 starter pack for $10 on a steam sale and I don't feel that it took me very far at all, although I used most of it on item slots. I've had enough fun with it that I'd give them more money but holy hell their base prices are absurd, and it's unlikely you'd ever get a 75% off sale on PS4.

The most anticipated game of launch is only a timed exclusive. Good news for everyone involved.

3 months makes it a timed exclusive? lol

Lol

Just 3 months. Bahaha...

horrible haha 3 months

Smh... You people do realize this was never a paid "exclusive" right? Only reason it's only been shown on PS4 first is because of Sony being more open as far as F2P policies goes. And also faster devkit allocation.

That desperate for bad PS4 news?

It was never 'exclusive'. They have always been clear about the possibility of Xbox One if they allowed self-publishing.

That's a good point. I imagine if you're looking for something like that than Warframe can be quite good. It just doesn't seem to be for me.

Why make it an exclusive in the first place. Sony needs to learn money-hatting 101 from M$.
Seriously? You're trolling right?

It wasn't exactly an exclusive when it had been on PC for so long.

Didn't the devs say they were waiting for Microsoft to change their policies before they thought of porting it over? Now that they have, it was only a matter of time.

Every single self-published title announced for PS3/4/Vita so far are all timed exclusives, given by how they're called console exclusive debut

There was never any doubt that self-published titles weren't coming to Xbox. The only ??? in regards to such titles was Below, Minecraft and World of Tanks.

We already know Below is a timed-exclusive, and Minecraft will be on all Playstation platforms. World of Tanks is still unknown.

Some of those games are Sony founded, so this is partially incorrect. Then you have the rest, that are either timed-exclusive or are not coming to Xbox because the devs are Phil Fishing about the console or something.

I see the Xbots amusing themselves over a f2p game which was never billed as exclusive anyway as it has been on pc already. I would laugh if it turns out Titanfall is only a 3 month exclusive as well, as we don't know any details because Ms have banned the devs from mentioning other platform versions.

Jesus, I saw some news on IGN that wasn't posted here, so I posted it. I didn't even include any backhanded comments or any other thinly veiled console war antics.

I'm not sure if self published games are actually Sony funded or not. Maybe through the pub-fund, which gives them ability to release on any platform later on. Games like Resogun, Rime or Everybody's Gone to Rapture are actually Sony published as far as I know, so there's practically no chance of them not being complete exclusives.

Timed exclusive
Console exclusive
exclusive content

I'm sick of these phrases

That's all it takes these days

Agreed.

This was a waste of money and time. Sony gave these guys visibilty that Microsoft will now benefit from.

Lame. Bad decision-making on Sony's part.

I played more than an hour and I like it, but I will spend more time with it once it's out on PS4. The devs were afaik not sure if you will be able to transfer progress.

Wow, reading that article again, it DOES seem like Sony did something to moneyhat it as timed exclusive, since the company refuses to comment on the availability on other platforms. That just screams "timed exclusive contract" to me.

This is a bit of a head scratcher as to why Sony would even bother if the game wasn't going to find its way to XBO right away anyway due to policy shifts.

Unless they were going to go with XBO originally as well, policy shift or not, until Sony approached them?

I believed it wasn't even a exclusive/timed exclusive to begin with since he commented on bringing the game to the Xbox One after MS had that whole Indie reversal... but it makes sense with the whole " it will make its console debut on PS4" talk at E3 from Adam Boyes

Did you read the article? The developer appears to be reluctant to talk about the Xbone version.

Heard from one of their livestreams that they're trying to allow you to transfer PC accounts to PS4, wonder if they'll be interchangeable for all platforms? Cross play will probably never happen though

I don't believe it's ever been described as exclusive... just coming to PS4 first.

Exactly. Neither Sony nor Warframe devs have ever used the term exclusive, especially since its on PC right now. The only that stopped Warframe from getting on XB1 was the boneheaded policies towards indies.

Again, it's probably something as simple as marketing in exchange for a short timed exclusivity. Appearing in Sony's booth at Gamescom and PAX alone was pretty good marketing for them.

Or it could be something as simple as them wanting to promote the version that's actually confirmed and not a possible version that might come in the future.

The developers have been updating it constantly. It's currently the most played non Valve shoot bang F2P game on Steam, doing better than Planetside 2.

They've a deal for 3 months, but whether it shows up on another console promptly thereafter or not would depend on the state of competitive indie programs. Depending how quickly MS is or isn't moving it might not appear on the button on Xbox One after 3 months....

As for 'why' there is a deal, I'm not sure, but was it a pub fund effort? It's not the only one of its kind...I mean there's a deal in the case of The Witness, even though it was effectively going to be timed console exclusive to PS4 anyway. Maybe Sony just like to formalise things, especially if it's relatively cheap to do so.

Wait, this has never been announced as an exclusive at all in any way, right?

In fact, I distinctly remember the devs chiming in once the indie publishing info came out saying that they would now be looking at a X1 port. Am I wrong?

Warframe or Warface, I really don't know which one I'm looking forward to more.

Warframe is actually good.

Although I didn't put much time into it because to get all the awesome powers they show off in the trailer, it'll take an eternity of playtime to get there.

Doesn't really matter, its on PC it wasn't really an exclusive. Give me cross-play between x1 and ps4 and I'll get excited.

  • It's already on PC
  • Why do you care about exclusive games?
  • "Timed exclusive" is a desperate term used to pad out a list of exclusives
