I like the different concept character designs for different reasons except the original version, but my favorites are Pirate's Curse and 1/2 Genie Hero (with tan skin, of course). However, it was Risky's Revenge that gave her the biggest make over, so these games all have their place in making Shantae look amazing.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but if you look at Shantae's dialogue artwork in Destructoid's video of Pirate's Curse, it looks pretty similar to the new HD style the Kickstarter game has:

I've never followed a kickstarter like this before, I really hope it reaches at least it's initial goal. I know every kickstarter can't have Mighty no 9 levels of success but how do these things usually play out? I would be so bummed out if it didn't meet its goal.
The stretch goals sound cool as heck and I am hoping they are achieved. If that 1.1mil one really is voice acting I'd love it, especially if the voices were somehwat cheesy (like mighty switch force). If some of them aren't met then I think it would be pretty cool if they were still developed and then released as DLC.

So, yeah, I agree with some here saying that Mighty No. 9 will be taking a chunk of people who would have backed this, but I think if WayForward can build a good campaign for it, it will do well. Getting the later stretch goals is...well...stretching it. I suspect we'll go as far as the first bonus chapter, but not much more at this rate.
I wonder how the ninja and summer costumes will act (Patty Wagon's costume seems obvious to me).

They need to discount Shantae Risky's Revenge because $12 is too much for that now. They also need to lower Mighty Flip Champs! and Mighty Milky Way because those are both overpriced at $8 each. Also, they need to fix the Canadian pricing of Mighty Switch Force! 2 because it's $7 in Canada while it's only $6 in the US. Fuck you WayForward.

I like how the art gets progressively worse over the years. Risky's Revenge has the best Shantae design by far. She doesn't look like a generic anime character, and her skin isn't too white.

Call me a drama queen, but I just don't buy "well a different artist does it every time so we didn't even notice we just leave designs up to the artists." That's not how design works. You don't design Shantae without looking at her old designs first to make sure you're drawing Shantae. You don't do it in a vacuum, it passes through multiple people. And the fact that their "compromise" to "fix it" that they posted today was to it was to keep her as white as possible and change her from pale white skin to a pale white skinned person who was out in the sun or one day just says to me it was an active choice to make her white.
I've known dark-skinned people who have bleached their skin. That kind of thing is dangerous and it happens because of society pushing shit like this, intentionally or not. I'm sure wayforward isn't sitting around and going "we hate brown people, let's make her white" but it's a stupid, conscious decision to lighten her way up like that.
Maybe it's just because I've experienced and seen what this kind of attitude can do but I just can't support something like this, even if I like wayforward. They couldn't let the like...ONE brown girl who's a main character in a game stay brown? Come on.

It's just the "fixed" image that they posted today doesn't fill me with confidence. That was really barely a change whatsoever and I don't believe the "oh we didn't even notice" initial response.

The 3DS and new design is a very drastic change. I understand it is to appeal to a new crowd, but as a fan, I wish they didn't change so much.

Want to back this but Atelier Meruru Plus just came out and I have Disgaea D2 at the end of the month , and Pokemon X and Y (and I need to get my taxes done this month). Have got it set to send me a reminder though.
Do you guys think that a game with a lighter complexioned character would actually have higher sales than if everything else were equal and her complexion were darker? And do you actually think this is a calculated decision by WF? On the first question I'm not sure, but on the second question I would really doubt it. I think a character of middle eastern descent (which I assume Shantae to be based on) can have varying skin tones and thus it's open to artist interpretation.

But... Why does the 3DS version look so much more appealing to me? It's got Electrolytes, Pirates, Metroidvania, RPG floaty number bits, less child-looking Shantae, and most important of all, it has Pixels. Piiiixelllllllz.
And those pixels are something that will never get added to this game. Probably. Unless there's a Pixelshantae costume, ...which would not be satisfactory, anyway, with the rest of the world remaining "HD".
